Introducing the MB153SP-B, a 3-in-2 SATA internal RAID backplane for 3.5" SATA hard drives. This is a lite version of the MB45X series by removing the monitoring features and reducing the overall cost, while keeping the same 3 year warranty and the core tray system for hot swapping and maintenance are kept for the best reliability in the market.

Slimmed Down Design

The MB153SP-B has been redesigned to be a lighter module, while maintaining the same level of quality, build, and service you'd expect from an Icy Dock product. While the design has gone through some changes, the space saving design is still established. The backplane module allows up to 3 x 3.5" SATA III hard drives, while only consuming two 5.25" bays. The module has also been redesigned for the type of power connector accepted. 15 pin SATA power is used to provide better accessibility for various host systems.

5 out of 5 eggsCool Product

Pros: Very sturdy design and very cool way to add drives to a nas. Replaceable fan. Interchangeable drive chassis.

Cons: The only drawback is the volume of the fan, but since it is easily replaceable it is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: If you want to add some drive and have easy access this is the way to go.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for hot swapping drives

Pros: The hot swapping functions flawlessly. Decent quiet fan. The caddies are pretty sturdy and are not just plastic. Screws are provided for both 3.5" & 2.5" drives so no need for an adapter.

The SATA plugs in the back symmetrical with the drive locations in the front. Useful if/when your drive fails and you need to replace it.

Cons: The fan could have had a higher CFM since my Enterprise drives still get to 34-36 C in 15 C ambient temperature when the RAID is being engaged. I would have preferred a cageless version but I assume that probably leads even worse temperature problems.

Other Thoughts: Overall pretty good and certainly better than the 5-in-3 solution (FatCage MB155SP-B) which has a lot more temperature problems. I would definitely recommend using a higher CFM fan if you are going to use Enterprise drives or even the NAS drives in a 24/7 environment.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Storage Option

Pros: Very nice utilization of the 5 1/4" Optical Disk space in a Computer case to facilitate easy access of hot swapping either your Disk Drives or 2 1/2" SSDs. The Module feels well constructed and it is not flimsy. The trays have been updated to be able to use the 2 1/2" SSDs now, and the trays look to be a highly polished steel finish, almost looking like chrome. The power and disk activity lights work well on the front panel.

Cons: No real Cons that I have to observe or share. I like the quality of this unit. I did go ahead and change out the 80 mm fan on this unit, to a speed adjustable fan, to keep it quiet.

Other Thoughts: Why would anyone mount their Disk or SSD drives deep inside their Computer case, with a ton of wires all around, when you can use something like this to facilitate moving or replacing your Drives with ease? This is the second one I have purchased, and if you are still using any full size disk drives, this is the way to go. ICY DOCK builds more compact units for just SSD use or 2 1/2 " format. I still use full size disk drives for back up storage.

4 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: Fit nicely into my case. Solid construction. Easy install. Will probably order a second unit.

Cons: Initially worked for 10 min then two drives went dead. Took me two hours of testing stuff to figure out the harddrive connectors were not fully inserting into the backplane once inserted into the cage. Simple solution, move the HD slighly lower in the tray. Works great now. .

Other Thoughts: Attach all wires to the unit before inserting the cage into place otherwise you cannot get to some of the connectors..

2 out of 5 eggsFlaky

Pros: 3 drives 2 bays with a fan! I had an older icy dock unit that had served me well for a long time. I was replacing the fan on it for the 4th time when the housing broke, so I opted to just replace the whole unit.

Cons: This is not the unit to replace it with. From old reliable to drive dropping nightmare. I'm guessing I got a bad unit, poor soldering I would suspect, but not worth the effort to fix. It did last a month, making it harder to return. Oh well, its gone now and I'm feeling better.

Other Thoughts: A shame really, I loved my old unit and expected this to be an improved replacement. Quality control strikes again!

5 out of 5 eggsConvenient HDD Storage

Pros: Works as advertised, got this to clear up room for a water cooling setup in the bottom of my Corsair 600T case and it fits well for only taking up two 5.25" slots and store up to 3 3.5" drives. My temps look about average, maybe better, than they did before but that a minor issue. Again it comes down to functionality - which this nails right on the spot.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works well. Seems fairly solid. No complaints. Fan doesn't seem excessively noisy.

Cons: Drive trays are a bit flimsy, but I bought this mainly for the 3 in 2 part and not to swap drives all the time. For the cost though this is a good drive bay unit.

3 out of 5 eggsMixed results

Pros: Compact, relatively low cost.

Cons: Had one unit fail almost immediately. Had symptoms of PCB errors and caused my array to fail due to random drive disconnects. One out of two ain't bad, I suppose.

5 out of 5 eggsICY DOCK ROCKS

Pros: ICY DOCK has best hot swap bays for Server and NAS builds.
Great quality, fit, features and appearance.
More than satisfied, thrilled.
My 3rd or 4th ICY DOCK product.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Custom NAS unit from almost new HP SFF 6300 Pro workstation
with Quad i5, Only unit that would fit in small form factor case.

5 out of 5 eggsperfect fit

Pros: The only drive to fit in a SFF buisness desktop. Still had to remove bottom plate and cut to edges. Now have 3 in 2 in 2 x3.5 external bays with about 3/4" protruded. Good for me the black plastic cover goes back from front almost 1/1/2"!!!
Works fine all drive recognized. Drives fit well in bays with no movement.
3 x 3TB NAS drives for FreeNas Server.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This worked so well, will purchase another for future projects!!
