5 out of 5 eggsBack in the saddle again!

Pros: Connect the power cable and the esata cable and your done. That simple? 99% true, but if that 1% means organization of your preferences then it's a home run and done simple concept. Loaded my box with 5xWD Red 2TB and purrs like a kitten using very little power, little to no noise and zero issues.

Cons: $500 is steep for basically a box for drives that doesn't do anything but link to my 1512. Or put it like this. When 5x WD 2TB Red RAID HDD's are cheaper than the box they are in, then Synology needs to look at its price point and think again. $1000 for 10TB expansion? I can build a rack box for 5 drives cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsstupid simple

Pros: Easy 123. Inserted 5 - 3 TB hard drives. Connected sata 3 cable. Insert power cable. Logged into my 1512+ and told it to make expansion my 2nd volume.

Cons: Took about 12-24 hours to format that much data. Shouldn't take that long to build from an empty volume with fresh drives. Price stinks too. Should be $200 for an expansion unit. All it has is 5 plays. Sans digital has same thing for $120-200.

5 out of 5 eggsNo-Brainer if You Have A Compatible Synology Device

Pros: Convenience, performance, features, compatibility.

Cons: Not the cheapest NAS in the world, but you get what you pay for. Also, documentation is erroneous (see "Other Thoughts").

Other Thoughts: If you have a compatible device that's full, then this is a no-brainer. Yes, it may be expensive if you consider it to be just another set of slots and a power cord, but that's selling the architecture short.

Synology is tops for SMB NAS--features, performance, and usability. Price, not so much, but if you're looking to save money, you're not looking at Synology devices anyway.

A few things that contradict the PDF directions from my experience (and verified by Synology support):

1) The documentation says that you should insert the eSATA plug with the "eSATA" text facing up. At least in my experience, the cable simply didn't go that way; I had to insert it with the "Synology" logo facing up on both the master device and the DX513. Worked just fine.

2) If you boot up the master device with ZERO disks in the DX513, the 513 will briefly power on, then shut itself down, perhaps to save power, I'm not sure. The DX513 will NOT show up in "External Devices" in DSM on the master device. This is intentional, near as I can tell: just put at least one disk in the DX513 and power it on, and it'll stay powered on and the device and the disk(s) will show up in DSM on the master device just fine.

Also, kudos to Synology support for getting back to me so quickly.

Synology is the best, and you get what you pay for. $500 for five bays of top-performing, fully-featured NAS storage is pretty reasonable no matter how you slice it.

5 out of 5 eggsRAID beware: All hard drives are not created equal.

Pros: See other thoughts

Cons: See other thoughts

Other Thoughts: A point to be made to users complaining about constant rebuilds, in particular the person using WD Greens: Not all hard drives are designed to work in a RAID situation. WD Greens are particularly known for poor performance. The problem is they lack a feature WD calls Time-Limited Error Recovery (TLER), other manufacturers have a similar feature under a different name. This feature restricts that amount of time a drive tries to spend recovering from a read error. If the drive spends too long dealing with a read/write error, the raid controller will thing the drive has failed and drop it from the array. More enterprise level drives like the Western Digital Caviar RE's do much better as they have this feature.

I have 5 RE4's in my Synology 1511+ and it's worked like a champ! Never dropped a single disk or had to rebuild.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate my Review

Pros: Easy Setup.

I am updating my review because it turns out that this unit does NOT like WD green drives. Even though the drives I was using were on the Synology approved drives list they caused most of the trouble I was having with this unit and once I figured that out things went much better. I assume it has something to do with the esata connection.

Cons: Poor error reporting, it would have saved me a lot of trouble if I had gotten some indication of what was going on instead of just locking up or telling me the volume was crashed.

Other Thoughts: Once the drives issue was figured out, seems stable although still a bit slow on the volume creation functions.

1 out of 5 eggsSave Your Money

Pros: Looks good, matches main unit well

Cons: Piece of junk.
keeps dropping all disks in expansion box (they suddenly disappear from the DSM storage manager screen).
Keeps telling me fan has failed, even though they are both running. Slows down volume creation to a crawl. Crashes the main unit (connection lost reboot)

Other Thoughts: So far I'm not impressed at all with this unit. I Suggest simply buying a larger main unit to begin with. Being able to add storage on later is a nice idea but poor execution in this case

5 out of 5 eggsWay too easy!!!

Pros: Basically plug and play...plug in the esata cable and go to the management software and set it up. Put in 5 WD RE4 2 TB and in a few hours it all set up. Used this to expand a 1812+ 8 bay nas by synology.

Cons: none so far
