If you love great sound you must experience Definitive’s BP-8040ST Bipolar SuperTower. Built on Definitive's proven Bipolar technology (speakers on front and back of enclosure), the BP-8040ST SuperTower is the crowning achievement of over 20 years of research and development to create the perfect balance of style, convenience, and most of all performance in a floor-standing loudspeaker. Its combination of Forward Focused Bipolar Array technology (for rich life-like, room-filling, three-dimensional sound), built-in SuperCube technology powered subwoofers (for lightning-fast, earthshaking bass), and the latest generation proprietary Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) midrange drivers, all housed in a rock-solid attractive enclosure, delivers unsurpassed sonic performance.

  • newegg Bipolar Technology Brings Performances to Life in Your Home Many experts and in-the-know listeners agree that bipolar speakers are superior for both music and home theater. With bipolar speaker technology each speaker incorporates two sets of drivers, one facing forward and the other facing to the rear so that the speakers radiate sound both forward and rearward exactly as sound is produced in real life. Forward Focused Bipolar Array technology is Definitive’s innovative improvement to the original Bipolar designs. This unique technology provides you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival sound from the front facing drivers and reflected delayed sound from the rear drivers. This combination creates a huge soundfield which is rich, warm, ultra clear and vibrantly alive for every listener in your room. Most importantly, Definitive's bipolar speakers make the walls of your room seem to disappear transporting you into the sound space of the recoded event.
  • newegg The Subwoofer System Will Rock Your World Each BP-8040ST combines a built-in 8" subwoofer driven by a 300-Watt class D amplifier and two pressure-coupled 8" Low Bass radiators for 30% more surface area than a single 12" woofer but with better control, speed and detail than a single big woofer could ever deliver. The built-in powered subwoofers achieve dramatically better blending, integration and timbre accuracy than could ever be achieved with separate subs. The brawny 300 Watt Class D amplifier features an integrated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) – in essence a mini computer – that equalizes the woofer system to extend and smooth the bass response, provides a phase coherent crossover to perfectly blend the subwoofer system with the midrange arrays for seamless high performance. Digital protection systems tightly monitor and control the woofer system to prevent distortion and woofer damage at ultra-high volume levels.
  • newegg Why Built-In Powered Subwoofers Are Better Than Separate Subs Besides eliminating the need for a floor space-hogging separate subwoofer, integrated subs offer dramatic performance benefits. First is the obvious benefit that you’ll have two subwoofers in the room instead of just one for simply more bass output. Second, two subwoofers in the room reduce “standing wave” room resonances that create bass dead zones in the room. With two ST-8040STs you’ll enjoy high impact bass throughout the room. Most importantly the subwoofers are perfectly integrated with the mid/high section. Plus, Definitive’s engineers have perfectly adjusted the crossover and phase to achieve seamless blending and life-like sound. All you have to do is set the bass volume to match your room and taste then sit back and enjoy great sound.
  • newegg Proprietary Technology Delivers High Definition Mids and Highs Each BP-8040ST features a D’Appolito front array consisting of two cast-basket 3-1/2" BDSS midrange drivers surrounding a 1" pure aluminum dome tweeter. The drivers feature BDSS technology that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges allowing longer, more linear excursion for greater clarity and finely textured inner detail. A new Linear Response Waveguide smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wider area for crystal clear intelligibility for every listener in the room. The tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, which has been heat-treated to relax the crystal structure and then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess. The rear array uses a single identical BDSS driver and the same 1" aluminum dome tweeter as used in the front array. Like the front array the rear array is housed in a separate sealed MDF enclosure to isolate the midrange drivers from the woofers’ influence.
  • newegg Slim Elegant Styling with Rambo-Like Brawn Definitive has devoted as much Design and Engineering attention to the styling and construction of the 8040’s enclosure as any other part of its design. The tapered front of the enclosure serves to make it appear slimmer while also enhancing sound quality by minimizing cabinet diffraction distortion. The decorative high gloss end cap and bottom panel add elegance to the matte black tower the way satin piping adds dash to a tuxedo. Each BP-8040ST occupies a mere 1 square foot of floor-space (including stabilizer feet) leaving plenty of room for furnishings. But the enclosure’s most important job is to be totally inert and resonance free so as not to color the sound. The sealed midrange enclosures also serve to provide bracing for the side walls while MDF cross braces near the woofer further stiffen the system. Tap on the side panels of a BP enclosure to hear the solid “thud” of a solid, well-damped cabinet instead of the hollow ring of a poorly constructed speaker.

5 out of 5 eggsMostly Great (Screws are garbage)

Pros: Compact, amazing sound, great bass.

Cons: Kinda hard to explain, but bass sounds great, but doesnt "feel" great.
Kindof a hollow bass. Most people probably wouldn't notice though.

Included screws for mounting the feet are garbage.
Trust me.

Other Thoughts: My original plan was to get rid of my 12 inch polk sub after getting these.
Though I think I am going to keep it now, just to keep the earth shaking bass.

Most people probably will not need a sub with these, but since I already have one, and selling it will get me half what I paid...

And now the screws...

On the first speaker, I broke the heads off of 4 out of the 8 feet screws.
(Using a hand screwdriver)

I managed to get 3 of them out with needle nose vice grips, but the fourth one broke off flush with the speaker housing.

Had some comparible sized decking screws.

Removed the screws that didn't break, and used only 8 decking screws instead.
(Hand to angle the one in, cause I couldn't remove the cheap broken screw)

Opened the second speaker, imediately threw the screws in the trash, and used 8 more decking screws.

Seriously, don't try to use those screws.
You can't imagine how much work it will be to remove all the broken ones.

And these towers will rock and rattle without all the screws.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat speaker price perhaps high

Pros: Sound Quality: the speaker produces a really natural sound. It really is difficult to tell that it is coming form a speaker when placed properly. The sounds are accurate too. Not overly bright or mechanical and you don't miss parts of the natural sound. Having moved from a more classical view of speakers i had to get past "driver" size as being important; Apparently it isn't so forget it :) I have cheaper speakers with much larger drivers and much smaller sound.

Generally def tech has a good reputation for a reason.

i was skeptical about the built in amp. You worry when you pay a significant amount of money on something about failure points. I haven't had any issues, but have emailed them to ask about if they support replacement before purchase of amps etc and they said it was relatively easy, and they do support that scenario in the case of failure which was reassuring for me. That might be something still in the back of my head. Honestly at any where near this price point 5 year warranty doesn't provide much reassurance. I'd expect a speaker to last 20 years. It may not with built in power supplies we'll see.

Cons: Here's the problem. Look at the sale prices on speakers in general. The markup is massive. No matter how much technology goes into these they are marked up more than anything else probably in your entertainment center which often goes for all speakers. Having to pay north of 700 for a speaker clearly won't work for most people, nor in my opinion should it. They need to put these on a sale for it to make sense no matter how good they are. But they probably aren't targeting most people here :) I was able to score 2 of these on a much lower price. Generally new egg is particularly good about helping with this so hopefully they don't let us down and a sale price will pop up eventually.

Rating is really about 3.5 simply due to the price. I should not have to sell blood to enjoy my movie experience at home. Yes you get a built in sub-woofer... even so.

Other Thoughts: A note about quality speakers: I have "cheapo" speakers for the rest of my system, and intend to fill out the rest as i can budget it like many people. But at least i have something i am happy with that i can build on and will keep for many years. Swapping out speakers for home theater usage has some implications: it is best to match speakers at least by brand. Part of the problem mixing is that the sound will be different even with really good speakers and this makes it less real for surround sound usage. You can often stick in a manufacture but mixing is often not a great idea. Similar to the reason to buy good speakers to avoid sound "artifacts" mixing and matching also creates "artifacts" that aren't natural. So put some thought into what you buy. You want to be happy with it :)

5 out of 5 eggsDefinitive Technology 8040's

Pros: Sound,Looks, sub woofer,highs

Cons: Price?
Powered subs need AC outlet nearby or you must run power to them.

Other Thoughts: Where to begin?
I have the 8040 family. Main,Center and soon to get the surrounds. Paired it with the Denon 1912 AVR.
Bass is tight, ample, not boomy or over done.
Mid-range is good to very good.
High's are brilliant, not tinny or muffled. Speaker comes with carpet spikes to accommodate carpeted floors, be careful, those suckers are long! Don't want to scratch surface under carpeting...a great buy.
Love them. You should look toward letting them break in, but after that just sit back and enjoy.
