Pros: Excellent streamer, low power consumption, very good Netflix interface.

Cons: At a little over 4 months of use my Roku 3 started hanging during Netflix streaming and would also hang at boot. Total reset required to bring it back to life; but it gets very old having to do this (plus fill out ALL the Roku and Netflix registration data) two or three times per day.

The problem is, apparently, that the unit overheats since the plastic case has no ventilation ports whatsoever and the Broadcom CPU nor the Samsung memory have no heat sinks. Google this problem and you will find many solutions posted, most of them involving making ventilation holes in the case and even fitting small, 40mm fans.

The Roku 3 only has 90 days warranty. I sent Roku a couple of e-mail support requests and both were completely ignored.

Save your money. Do not buy it.

Pros: I bought a Roku 3. Two weeks after I received the unit it stopped responding to the remote, I figured it just needed to be setup again. I work two jobs and haven’t had the time to watch any TV recently, and by the time I really had a chance to sit down with the unit and discover that it wasn’t working at all it was 2 days after the 30 that the retailer allows for returns. I called Roku support and talked to a girl who was very nice, but wasn’t well suited to support. On top of this, she had received no training from Roku. The call took an hour and 45 minutes, she left the call 8 times to talk to her supervisor. This was an hour and 45 minutes of her fumbling around blind, with her superiors unwilling to believe that the unit was broken, an hour and 45 minutes of my time that I’ll never get back, endlessly rebooting a Roku unit. I think some people might say that it’s a great product, but the support sucks, but that’s not really true. The support is the product. It’s all the product. I think consumers think that corporations are somehow misinformed about how bad their support is, but does that really make sense? That a company could build a great little TV box, with new technology, have QA/QI departments, have whole departments to manage their image, but be uninformed that their support sucks? It seems far more likely that choosing to have bad support is a conscious decision. And if it is, isn’t the purpose of that decision to force customers to get tired of waiting on the phone, repeating idiotic tasks, and simply go away. Or (homerun!) buy another brand new unit? If you had to choose one, does what I experienced sound more like support, or theft?

Cons: Your support team decided that my unit was broken and told me where to send it to be fixed. I asked for a mailing label, and was told that only customers that bought their units directly from Roku were “real enough” customers (not her words) to get mailing labels. Because I bought my Roku from a retailer, I simply didn’t measure up. So I returned my unit during a lunch break and waited. And waited. And I called Roku and they told me they had lost the unit. At first they didn’t know who I was because the email address they had for me, the one I repeated over and over, was wrong. Then they said they hadn’t received my unit, and to check my tracking number. After telling your support person that I didn’t have a tracking number, she told me to find the tracking number. I spoke to her superior, after telling him that I didn’t have a tracking number, he told me to look for the tracking number. I told him (and this is becoming a social experiment for me at this point) three times that I did not have a tracking number, and each time he advised me to look at the tracking number. So I ask you – who do you think lost this package? The mailman or your “support”? My feeling is that working for a company that makes you say things so silly is dehumanizing. Initially I felt angry, but as the conversation progressed I felt sorry for him. Your support supervisor was acting insane to keep his job.
I feel like I’ve been through enough now, I’d like you to be decent. I sent you a Roku 3 that broke only weeks (maybe during the first days – I didn’t have time to turn it on) after I bought it. It doesn’t matter where I bought it, I’m your customer, I bought a couple of Rokus, and if you check your records you’ll see that’s true. If you check your records you’ll see that I’ve spent 2 and a half hours with your support team. I would like you to send me a replacement unit. I’m your customer, I’d like you to treat me like it matters to have customers, and like I matter enough to replace a unit that has so thoroughly been tested as being bad. Will you do the right thing?

Other Thoughts: Don't buy things from companies that don't respect you. Not offering support for a product that is less than 5 weeks old is theft.

Pros: Way more impressive than previous versions (I had the XS).

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Bought a refurb on Neweggflash. The remote was defective. A simple disassembly revealed the problem. A little mini 'touchpad' thingy was out of place. Easy fix.

Pros: *Consolidates all streaming apps in one place.
*Allows you to arrange the apps in order of most importance
*Uses Shutterfly to display pictures as a screen saver
*Cool Remote with headphone availability to watch your shows without disturbing others
*Small inconspicuous design
*Streams with hardly any issues

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My husband and I decided to ditch the satellite bill for channels and shows we never watched. We used to stream using our computers or the PS3. That was always cumbersome in hooking up HDMI cables and sometimes the streaming was iffy. With the Roku, everything has been perfectly easy and smooth. We love it!

Pros: bought this to stream content from my pc to a tv about 20 feet away using plex. im really pleased. plex is awesome, all my movies and tv can be streamed in 720p. the remote is nice. huge selection of roku channels. and the box is pretty quick and responive.

Cons: 720p only. ive tried 1080p, and it looks worse. and i have a pretty sweet pc, it could definitely handle on-the-fly transcoding. and its a wired gigabit connection to the router. not too big of a deal, 95% of my vid library is 720p anyway. also plex+roku is 2-channel stereo. also not a big deal for my setup right now. all of these cons may disappear with firmware updates(?).

Other Thoughts: one thing to note, with plex+roku, you have to remux, rename, and re-organize your library, so it all sycs up right, none of which ive found difficult or too tedious to be worth it. with xmedia recode(free,amazing), i can remux a .mkv movie in about 1-2min(using 'copy' instead of 'convert' in the video tab). and a season of 26 hr.-long episodes of 720p tv takes about 40-60min. dont expect the ultimate home theater experience, but if you just want to stream your vids to a seperate tv, im finding this works very well.

Pros: streams all my video from computer to other tvs via plex app. lots of sweet free channels, plus all your favorites

Cons: 720p only, rgb color range. some slight recoding for some files to stream well.

Other Thoughts: it says 1080p is possible, not with my setup. and i have tried. i mainly bought this to stream vid files from my pc to other tvs. most of my files are 720p anyway, so no big deal. however, i have found , for best playback, remuxing files in Xmedia Recode down to aac stereo is best. it only takes about a minute to recode any mkv file, i can do a batch of ten 720ptv episodes in about 10-12 minutes(make sure you hit the 'copy' button instead of the 'encode' button in the video tab). you also might want to re-name the files, the plex site explains it all, but ive found you dont need to rename alot of stuff. 720p looks pretty great considering its a good source file, some might find the color range a little weak, i do. most people wont even notice, good results can be had by readjusting your tvs color settings. hopefully this will be updated in a firmware fix. the remote is sweet.

Pros: Easy to set up and use. Ever increasing selection of channels. Displays very nice high def stream using only 3 to 4 Mbps. Supports 1080p. Very responsive when menu surfing. Allows both wired and wireless network connections.

Cons: This is not a knock on Roku, but getting live sports can be difficult if not impossible for certain sports and leagues (like EPL soccer for example). Some channels and content cannot be purchased directly and are still only available on the upper tiers of a cable subscription.

Other Thoughts: I believe that once the market is saturated with streaming devices like Roku, content creators will be able to bypass cable companies and sell directly to their customers. For now, cable companies still control a lot of the best live content, especially sports. If you don't care about sports, cutting the cable cord is much easier if you have Netflix, Hulu plus, etc. MLB, MLS, and NHL subscriptions are available on Roku, and WatchESPN is available as a free bonus from most ISPs. ESPN makes most of their broadcasts available on WatchESPN on a delayed basis (next day), and I get it free with my Cox Internet subscription.
Don't expect to get everything free with ROKU. Paying for a few services, like live sports or Netflix will give you access to a ton of great content. We still have the lowest cable package (Economy from Cox), so haven't been able to completely cut the cord, but with Roku, and with the HDHomeRun prime (allowed us to get rid of cable boxes and DVRs), we have cut our cable bill down from about $120/month to $30!

Cons: bought this to utilize the mobile apps, both iOS and android to stream music, the app did not function even though I had android 4.2.2 . did not get to try the iOS since the android failed

Pros: This is a Great Unit with Great Menus. This unit is superior to "D-Link" and "NetGear-NeoTV" streamers. This unit has the Cat-5 hardwire connection.You can buy the 2 Yr factory replacement warranty from Roku.com The menus are extensive, they have "Acorn TV" plus "Spirit Clips" along with NetFlix and Hulu-Plus. I fired my satellite dish company, and saved a lot of cash. I like
DSL TV better (no commercials) I put up an outside antenna
and get all the local channels too. I do not recommend any
other Roku other than 3 because they are all "Wi-Fi" with no
LAN connection. I used the Trendnet TPL-306E2K in all bedrooms and the units work perfectly at 200 Mbps. Have Fun!

Cons: You can by this unit all day long for $94 with free shipping on Amzn!
