2 out of 5 eggsDrop connections

Pros: The unit is easy to setup, provides bunch of features.
Raid-0 is fast for normal HDDs.

Cons: After running for a while, it get really hot, and will drop connections.
The indicator keep blinking, but the computer just can't detect anything.

Sometimes it won't wake from sleep.

Other Thoughts: It doesn't seem to be able to copy(recover) between two disks when in Raid-1 mode.

3 out of 5 eggsModel ** U3 adds USB 3.0 but ....

Pros: The Zalman ZH-MH200 had everything I wanted except no USB 3.0 and latest SATA spec support. This model adds USB 3.0

Cons: This new lower cost model (only different by U3) has USB 3.0 but no other USB / SD features and doesn't confirm updated SATA .

Other Thoughts: Since Zalman seem to read these comments, Z please correct this omission (all we needed was the upgrade) and not to frustrate your customers make a more obvious change in the model number.

2 out of 5 eggsQuicker than USB 2.0, but needs improvement

Pros: -Faster than USB 2.0

-Raid configuration is very easy and works well

-Support for desktop and laptop drives

Cons: -Esata was considerably faster for my two hitachi 1tb drives vs USB 3.0

-Slot size for desktop drives leaves a LOT of space for the drives to wiggle around. I tried Western Digital Black, Green, Seagate 1.5tb barracuda, and hitachi 1tb drives...ALL moved around physically in the bay too much to be considered stable.

Other Thoughts: While I can appreciate Zalman's desire to make this a 'green' external docking station, I dislike how the dock automatically shuts down the drives after 10 min. I used these drives to store movies for my home theater setup, and It sometimes took upwards of 20-30 seconds for the drives to come back to life and allow me to search for something. The delay is too long in my opinion and became frustrating.

Speed over USB 3.0 was disappointing when the drives were configured in raid 0. When connected via esata, I regularly got 25-35mb/s higher speeds.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Value Customer,

Thank you for your inputs, we will make sure our next generation of product will be improved.

1 out of 5 eggsNOT RECOMMENDED

Cons: I put 2 x G.Skill Phoenix Pro SSDs into the slots and configured them as RAID 0. The transfer rate is topped at 200MBytes/sec for both read and write, which is extremely disappointing. It is definitely not the limitation of USB 3.0 because benchmark shows that SuperTalent's RAID Drive USB 3.0 is capable of reading at over 350MBytes/sec.

I tried everything including using Windows 7's software RAID configuration but resulting in no performance increase at all. I connected those drives to SATA and BOOM, I am able to achieve 439MBytes/sec.

Other Thoughts: Use this for regular mechanical drive might be ok but I don't think it's worth it unless you need the portability. Be ware that this thing doesn't have a locking mechanism so your drives can easily fall out (hence not really portable?). I am not sure whether anyone can find a practical use for this thing.
