5 out of 5 eggsFast, Reliable and Warrantied

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: These are 5 year warrantied from Western Digital. Fast & Reliable.
If you are looking for the manufacturer's warranty you need to buy these drives. The warranty is effective from sale date.

Cons: They are mechanical drives that spin. So they will be louder than SSD's.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 4T capacity.
Fast.
SATA II
Works in RAID arrays.

Cons: For some insane reason the pegs in Cooler Master HAF 932 drive holders do not fit into the threaded holes. It was possible to slightly expand the inner diameter of threading while keeping it functional for regular screw mounting, however this operation can leave specks of aluminum (I used compressed air to blow all such debris out and away from the board), and should not be necessary for such a device.

It is possible that case designers are wrong in their expectation for inner diameter of the threading, however I have encountered the problem when I had to install these drives.

2 out of 5 eggsSo-So

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Performance is on par with other drives.

Cons: I have 11 of these installed in a QNAP NAS box, 1 is a hot spare. I've had 3 of them die in the last year. MUCH higher failure rate than other drives.

Other Thoughts: If I were to do this again I'd go with the HSGT drives as they have a FAR lower failure rate per Backblaze.

5 out of 5 eggsHad two of these since June 2014, been running continuously

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought two of these with the StarTech.com dual drive bay (make sure you get ones with chipsets verified to read 4TB drives!). Been using them to store everything, with the dual drives on the dual drive bay, makes 7.2TB. No problems at all.

Cons: None, these cost more because they are made with quality components.

Other Thoughts: I like the bay format more than putting them in a tower, etc. Those always seem to make them so friggen hot, but with the bay, they shed heat nicely.

REMEMBER TO GET BAYS THAT REPORT BEING ABLE TO READ 4TB DRIVES.

1 out of 5 eggsnewegg voided warranty?

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Bought 3 two years ago, using in SYN 713+ NAS. After testing all three, set one aside as a spare. RAID10

Cons: Bought three from newegg; sent them all back because (surprise) not shipped properly; got three more. two have been working nonstop for 2 years; but recently, after a vacation/shutdown, volume came up degraded, smart test failed, drive went downhill after that. Popped in my spare and keeping fingers crossed.

Now trying to get the failed disk repaired, WD says my warranty is void? Its supposed to be five years?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Got 2 drives almost 2 years ago. They work. Work very well.

They have over 450 days of work time and have not failed me once.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I use the drives for Video and VFX work daily, caching large amount of data and they simply keep on working, what else could you ask for?

3 out of 5 eggs2 out of 2 failures (UPDATE)

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Excellent after sales support from WD

Cons: Failure in the 1st place

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my previous review.

I contacted WD support and an RMA was organised with no questions asked. The HDD was shipped back to WD Malaysia via FedEx (at WD's expense) and a replacement unit has now been dispatched. I will provide an update if their is any issue with this replacement unit.

Despite being somewhat disappointed by the drive problem, I must complement WD on their after sales service which in this instance was second to none.

1 out of 5 eggs2 out of 2 failures

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheaper than buying in Australia

Cons: Both have developed errors on S.M.A.R.T testing
No warranty coverage in Australia

Other Thoughts: I have a total 8 of these drives which I purchased for the supposed reliability. I am only using them in a domestic environment but they are on 24/7 in a Synology RackStation RS3614xs+ rack mount NAS drive.

6 were purchased in Australia from 2 different retailers and 2 were purchased from NewEgg. Both of the NewEgg drives have now failed S.M.A.R.T testing by the Synology NAS drive. The 1st drive starting failing just outside the NewEgg RMA period but NewEgg were good enough to provide a RMA replacement. The 2nd drive has now come up with 5 bad sectors after ~3500 hours use.

My problem now is the WD Australia will not cover the warranty as it was purchased out of country so I will need to explore my options with WD USA.

I don't know if these drive can't handle the additional shipping from the US or if these "Bare Drives" are made to a different standard to regular drives but it may just really an unfortunate coincidence that the only drives to fail are the ones from NewEgg . The drives themselves were well packaged by NewEgg during delivery so I don't know what the problem is. I note that a couple of other reviewers have experienced early failures as well as a DOA so it may we'll just be a WD QA issues.

If you are buying from Australia can I suggest that you don't buy from NewEgg because of the additional warranty hassles should you have any issues. It is worth paying the exorbitant prices differential to buy the local product just for the Australian warranty and support. Lesson learn't for me.

5 out of 5 eggsBought two of these RE 4TB

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD4000FYYZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: - Large space, but keep in mind the actual usable space will be around 3.6TB.
- Make sure you format these drives with the GUID partition table (GPT) partitioning scheme (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2581408). This allows you to use >2TB drives.
- I plug my two RE4 into StarTech drive bays to act as external drive storage, works great, just make sure your drive bay states it has been tested with 4TB drives.

Cons: ...you know, when I received my drives, the packaging was wonderful. They actually put them in these drive-shaped encasing. The encasing were so cool that I actually couldn't bring myself to throw them out...so now they sit there looking for something to cover when I ship something.

Other Thoughts: Crucial Micron shook the ground with slashing the SSD per GB to ~60 cents from OCZ's $1.20 per GB. Western Digital should be the first to offer a 4TB SSD cheap, that would be a memorable PR event. ;)
