2 out of 5 eggsThis SDD can fail in a catastrophic way

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: When it was working the SSD was screaming fast, and windows 8.1 would boot up after post in 4 seconds or less. I was absolutely infatuated with this SDD

Cons: The SDD failed in a spectacular way that at first made me thing my Z87-Pro mobo was bad as after post windows would start to load, then get stuck infinitely in the loading animation. Upon attempting the automated repair process, or trying to boot to the windows 8.1 or windows 7 install disks I found that windows would load the files, then just go to a blank screen. After removing every device and peripheral from my Mobo, but the DVD drive I finally narrowed the scope of the problem to the SDD.

At this point I tried connecting the SSD to open SATA ports on two other computer's running windows 7, and both of those PCs experienced identical problems.

Finally I connected the EVO 840 SDD to my laptop which was logged in using windows 7 via SATA to USB adapter windows appeared to read the drive, however anytime I tried to access the drive from Computer -> E: explorer.exe would be come unresponsive and require a restart (which would fail and remain locked), if I tried to disk management to check the drive the window was unable to display any data, and when I went to the device manager and tried to populate the drive data, it caused device manager to become unresponsive to which I have to hard power-cycle the laptop via holding the start button because windows would be stuck in the shutdown process indefinitely.

Other Thoughts: I have had a few HDD failures in the past, and when they bit the dust, they had the decency to be easily diagnosed. When this SDD fails, it apparently has a chance to be completely bricked to the point that any OS, or application that attempts to reference it will become unresponsive which prevents it from being reformatted or repaired. Even the Samsung software for data migration and firmware updates become completely locked up.

Attempting to reach the customer support has been a hassle as their hours of operations are only 9am-9pm, which is difficult for me since I work the night shift and am either alseep, heading to work, or at work during the time when they have representatives available. Additionally their website email function is broken as two different PCs and two different web browsers have been unable to select a "category" for their web form for the nature of the inquiry so I was unable to progress to detailing and submitting my inquiry.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super fast loading on anything put of this. Windows loads super fast and puts me straight into my games with ease. On bf4 I'm the first if not one of the first to load in and start capturing flags. In all my FPS games or any game that doesn't require me to wait on everyone to load I'm there playing a good minute or more before my friends with hhd giving me an advantage over opponents still loading

Cons: Wish I would have got more space. 500gb is great im not yet half full on mine, but should have gone for the 1tb

Also it's outer shell is plastic, I expected thin metal. How ever it's in my SSD tray tucked away in my case so nothing could physically damage it

5 out of 5 eggsLovin' it

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, cooler, battery life

Cons: Wish it was a Pro

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace the original 500GB Seagate hybrid drive that came with my Samsung Series 5 ultrabook before the drive died on me. I used the Apricorn USB 3.0 wire to clone the OEM drive to the Samsung SSD and everything worked flawlessly. I use this laptop as the machine that sits on my lap in the evening for casual gaming, music storage and ebook repository. It's also the machine that I travel with since it's small and light and I've found that since I installed the SSD the battery lasts significantly longer. I'm pleased and would not go back to a regular HDD.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic performance, even on SATA 2.0

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Amazing performance. (Burst at 1.2 GB/Sec, 600 MB/s sustained on my SATA 2.0 interface with >2GB .iso transfer) The best performance of any SSD I have ever purchased.
Reasonable value $/GB.
Samsung Quality and 3-year warranty.
Less weight than a platter drive
You can mount it anywhere. :)

Cons: Still not as cheap $/GB as a platter drive, but for four times the performance, I'm willing to accept one-fourth the capacity for the money!

Other Thoughts: The reliability ratings on the SSDs from the top tier (Crucial/Micron, Intel, Samsung) are on-par or surpass the top platter manufacturers for most platter-based products (WD, Seagate, etc.) so you should give them a try. Make sure you have a decent power supply, dirty power can cause issues that appear to be bad SSDs. I have had great experience with Samsung drives. Remember, if it hasn't been published, BACK IT UP!

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good read/write speeds
Decent price for its capacity
Easy installation and setup

Cons: Benchmarks a little slower than the 250GB
A little slower than PCI-E SSDs as well

Other Thoughts: I upgraded/cross-graded to this drive from a 240GB Revodrive (not Revodrive 2 or 3) due to a need for more space for all of the programs that I use often. While benchmarks on the two drives show that the EVO should be far superior, I've noticed that it is better in some areas and not as good in others, but, generally, they are about the same. I would have to say that the newer PCI-E SSD cards are probably quite a bit better, but the price is no comparison.

5 out of 5 eggsExpensive but nice.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I've had it for a few months now. Replaced my laptop hard drive and now it boots in less than 5 seconds after post running Windows 8.1.1. Makes the laptop seems like new again.

Cons: Expensive. Wish these drives would drop to under $200 soon. When they do I'm getting a few more.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, huge upgrade

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, easy to install, great software

Cons: High Price

Other Thoughts: Had a Raid-0 setup with two 10K rpm hard drives. Felt some lag when opening Photoshop and doing other tasks so I decided to get an SSD. After some research, the Samsung 840 Evo series seemed to be the best bang for the buck. I cloned the data over from my Raid-0 drives to the SSD (had to change msahci registry setting before cloning) and installed the drive, booted in extremely fast. All the apps load so fast compared to the raid-0.

Now that I've used SSD, I can't go back to HDD's.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Super easy to install with their migration software that I downloaded. Seems faster and is definitely larger than my older 128gb Samsung SSD. Prices on SSDs have fallen dramatically. This cost about what a 256gb costs a ayear ago

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Insanely Added to 5 year old system, boots into Windows 8.1 in less than 10 seconds. Games load so much faster and have less hiccups. Great for saving space in the case too.

Cons: It doesn't do my dishes or wash my clothes for me.

Other Thoughts: Great for adding life to an already old system. Runs great on 5 year old EVGA X58 SLI mobo. 10 seconds from after POST to desktop.
