2 out of 5 eggsOkay - failed after a few months use

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, when it works.

Cons: Unreliable; expensive

Other Thoughts: This drive failed after a few months of use. I had it installed in a system and then put that system to the side to use the Gigabyte Brix (which I love). I pulled the system out with this drive and it failed to boot. I tried re-installing two separate Operating Systems and both failed. An EXTREMELY expensive few months operating time with this.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggs20 times faster than old drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Didn't take long and was easy to install Operating system
boots up in about 8 seconds
Have been using drive now for 6 month's no problems

Cons: Should have notes when buying this drive, "doesn't come with Mounting trey. Not that it effects the way the drive works.
The price is high. Cannot afford more at this point.

Other Thoughts: Using it in a build I made 4 years ago. This one upgrade has this machine very noticably quicker.
Using swap drive for other hard drives, this SSD Drive seems to help them move quicker also.
Old drive was a "Western Digital WD RE4 WD5003ABYX 500GB 7200 RPM 64MB"

4 out of 5 eggsBetter performance and transition than expected

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: There are several makes, models and sizes of SSDs to choose from, and the prices have dropped to make it a feasible choice over HDD boot drives and ISRT configurations of an HDD and small SSD. The "enthusiast community" has been touting the Samsung models at least since the arrival of the 830 models a few years ago.

I took weeks and months to clean up, assess and tune my OS HDD installation before proceeding to clone to the 840-Pro. All went extremely well. The performance difference over ISRT and certainly over a standalone HDD is stunning. One can see this first and right away from boot-up: between log-in and presentation of the Win 7 desktop, it is obvious that all the processes, services and system tray items load much, much faster. With standalone HDD, it took the good part of a minute or longer before my AV software tells me that I'm "protected." This happens now as soon as the desktop initially appears at bootup.

The Samsung Magician software is also quite impressive. It offers three profile selections to tune your OS, over-provisioning and other aspects.

Further, the RAPID mode feature has been met with suspicion as a gimmick, but it is another caching strategy that takes advantage of your high-speed RAM to more than double the effective sequential read/write throughput in benchmarks. While benchmarks don't reflect the real world, I think I notice the difference between the published specs for the drive without RAPID and the performance with RAPID. This could be due to what some call the "placebo effect," suggesting this difference is a phenomenon of user imagination, but I'm fairly convinced there is a noticeable real difference.

Cons: At this time, I'm going to drop my rating by one Egg, which is really quite lenient. Even if you register the product and create an account at the Samsung web-site, the e-mail link for tech-support doesn't work. You cannot submit questions. Others have noted getting a run-around with phone support.

I've been able to get response by e-mail and submit support tickets with Intel, WD, ASUS and other companies -- sometimes without establishing an account. There is no reason why Samsung should cripple this customer relations factor.

Other Thoughts: You can get two of these and build a RAID0 -- or use even more drives for the same approach. But it's not so worth doing for several reasons. With chipsets and BIOS updates of Z68 and later, you have Windows TRIM support for a standalone SSD under RAID, and possibly for multi-disk RAID configurations, but in the latter case -- only with BIOS and IRST-software updates.

In order to implement the "RAPID" feature (and likely upgrade the firmware) you need to configure the SSD in BIOS's AHCI-mode. If you have HDDs in RAID requiring RAID-mode configuration, you might reconsider your strategy. If you never needed to have multi-disk RAID configurations, you should run the Windows "Fix-It" button and convert the disk to bootable AHCI mode.

Also, if you follow Samsung's recommendations, be prepared to give up as much as 48GB of space on the drive for over-provisioning-- which helps the drive do its internal maintenance and extend its life. The rule-of-thumb is 10% unallocated space for over-provisioning.

If you are cloning an HDD OS installation for Win 7, make sure you've upgraded to SP 1, and use more recently released versions of cloning software. You don't need to use Samsung's migration tool: Acronis Disk Director Home or True Image and probably some other cloning software will work -- Acronis is guaranteed. The main thing to assure yourself: the drive partition should be properly aligned, and there is a command-line utility which will do that while wiping the drive clean for OS re-install. Acronis will assure that you don't need to go through that misery if you're hoping to clone your boot-system HDD.

5 out of 5 eggsbest SSD at the time

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: not sandforce based
no compression garbage

great read and write speed
solid build quality
properly handles trim

Cons: doesn't deal as well as I'd like with high numbers of mixed read/write IOPS

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on Newegg helping me

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I recommend this drive above all others for your c: drive operating system drive. Amazingly fast noticeably faster than the competition.

Cons: none whatsoever, I talked with newegg and they smoothed over the problem I had that I had to go back to Samsung. I always thought Newegg was top customer service and it was shaken I'm convinced that it was just a bad handling of my case with customer service but they have made things better for me. Thank you newegg

Other Thoughts: Love this drive!

1 out of 5 eggsDied after a couple of days

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Capacity and speed (while it worked)

Cons: I had to wait for a couple of weeks before installing the SSD. After installing it in my new Lenovo ThinkPad T440s, it worked for a couple of days, then blue-screened and died. T440s has a basic disk diagnostics in the BIOS which found a couple of failures (random read, etc). Unfortunately I was one day over the Newegg's replacement period (1 month) so I have to go through Samsung. I've created an RMA, but it's not an immediate one - "wait, we will contact you". Here I am with $400 gone, no SSD and waiting for the good will of Samsung's support. Total disappointment.

Other Thoughts: SSDs are known for their high initial failure rate and DOAs. If you don't have a strong support, they turn into a pain. Make sure to test the SSDs you have bought from Newegg immediately if you want to catch the "replacement period". Otherwise you end up in the mercy of the manufacturer support.

5 out of 5 eggsReally Solid

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I've been using these in a RAID 6 with an LSI-9271-8i card. They've performed perfectly. The 840-pro's DO generate drive activity on Pin-11 so they are friendly to many hotswap trays. OCZ's aren't or weren't.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I am using a Supermicro M28SAB 8x2.5" in 2x5.25" bay hotswap rack which has 2 iPass (SFF-8087) connectors and 2 power connectors. I am connecting the rack to an LSI 9271-8i RAID card. The 840-Pro's are the only ones that display drive activity, the OCZ's are either solid on, solid off, or solid RED because they've failed. Samsung 840-Pro are the only way to fly. I made a post on the OCZ forums, you can search for Pin-11 MrFreshly to read it if you want any more info.

Pros: Not a review just an FYI regarding firmware

Cons: none -see other thoughts

Other Thoughts: FYI - firmware downloads are available at the Samsung semiconductor website. you won't find it on the consumer electronics site. Samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/

5 out of 5 eggsSpeed and Relability

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD512BW 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Samsung makes a lot of good products! But the Samsung SSD's are a stand out product when it comes to reliability and speed. The Pro series has it all 5 yrs. of warranty and the software that comes with it is a very good plus. It enables you to adjust your needs and keeps the unit stabilized when needed!

Cons: None at this time! And I don't expect any!
