5 out of 5 eggsWorks As Expected

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fairly priced and as quick as any mechanical drive can be expected to be.

Instead of the consumer grade external backup drives with a puny 1 year warranty, I bought this enterprise drive with a 5 year warranty as a backup device for my workhorse computer. Mated it with a Startech SATA-1-2-3 with eSATA and USB 3.0 enclosure. Max transfer rate was about 80MB/s over USB 3.0. Backed up about 220GB in about an hour and 30 minutes, so I cannot complain.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: There was the equivalent of an information strip search to get order verification to release this part of my order to ship, totaling $134. The $50 enclosure sailed right through. WTH?!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Price

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast, quiet and very reliable. Had to pick up a second one of these bad boys for my LAN box. Great for the price and even goes on sale rather frequently. Definitely a good pick

Cons: Honestly none that I can think of

5 out of 5 eggsWD2000F9YZ

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have been using WD hardware for decades with full satisfaction, this HD is in use and delivers what I expect.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Easy to install and lasts a long time.

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up again

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Big storage
Fast SATA 6 read and write speed

Cons: After 3 months of use, this drive has become noisy. It has a deep humming sound coming from it, and there is a audible clack clack sound coming from it. Looks like it is failing, which is very unusual since all my other western Digital drives, that are older then this one, are still going strong and silent.

Other Thoughts: Looks like a bad drive afterall.

1 out of 5 eggsWas expecting more

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: It wasn't DOA.

Cons: Drive died after 2 weeks of use.

Other Thoughts: Currently waiting on RMA from newegg, hopefully the new drive will last a bit longer.

5 out of 5 eggsAs usual, Western Digital delivers!

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: These are outstanding drives! I purchased 2 for a RAID 0 setup and the performance numbers are excellent.

I ran ATTO on a single drive, then in RAID 0.
Single HDD I scored 140~150MB write and 150~165 read.
RAID 0 scored 250~260MB write and 325~360MB read.

The speeds almost doubled in RAID 0 (as it should be).

Cons: There are no cons. Anyone complaining about the lack of SATA locking don't understand what this drive is designed for.

Other Thoughts: In other thoughts, these drives are almost as fast as my raptors. I was not expecting these drives to be this fast (RAID or not)... I have purchased about 50+ WD drives and have never received a DOA and they normally last a very long time. This drive is an Enterprise class with a 5 year warranty, how can you beat that?

I'm, hoping that someone who reads my review finds something helpful. With all these EggExpert reviews, it's hard to add anything useful except my RAID performance results.

I will also add this: I installed these two drives on a Marvell 88SE9172 chip (This is a built RAID controller on my X79 platform motherboard).

Hope you find something useful in my review! Thanks for reading!

4 out of 5 eggsGood hard Drive, weird SATA

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Well, it's always good to have 2TB of storage, but outside of that it's a pretty solid hard drive. The price may be somewhat staggering, but there's a reason for this, as this is designed more for a server environment and 24/7 use. This drive is great for a home media server (which I recommend building if you have a bunch of computers in your household, and media devices like a Roku or other media streamer) and I'd personally worry less about a drive like this with it's 5 year warranty than I would a cheaper driver with a 2 year. If you don't intend to use this for server use, I can attested that it does make a great hard drive in general. While I use an SSD for my OS install drive (be it Ubuntu or Windows), I install my Steam/Origin games on one of these large drives, and I could tell you that this driver performed very quickly for launching games and in gameplay whenever the game has to load data.

Cons: I found the connector to be odd compared to my other drives, and seemed loose, but as long as I set it and leave it alone, it's in there pretty well. What can happen though, is if you decide to check the inside of your computer while it's on(say checking a fan or feeling air-flow) you might accidentally yank it out if you snag it's SATA cable. It wasn't enough to ruin the drive, but it's something to consider.

Other Thoughts: While this is a very expensive drive, it does have a very long warranty and in conjunction with it being more aimed at server/enterprise environments I personally feel very secure in having my data on this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive performance for a hard drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 7200RPM, 64MB cache, excellent sequential, 512K, and random 4K read/write performance.
Using CrystalDiskMark, I saw the following results on a freshly formatted drive:
Sequential read 168MB/s, write 164 MB/s
512K read 57 MB/s, write 96MB/s
4K random read .76 MB/s, write 1.68 MB/s
4K/Queue Depth 32 read 2.01 MB/s, write 1.67 MB/s

After filling 80% of the drive with data, the sequential read/writes slowed down substantially since they were taking place on the slowest part of the drive, but were still respectable for a hard drive, and corresponded roughly to the performance I see on my cheaper WD 1.5TB green drives when they are empty. However, the random read/writes actually (well, mostly) sped up slightly under CrystalDiskMark, possibly because the heads were not having to seek as far (since CDM only had 20% of the drive to write its random test data to). These were the readings for an 80% full drive:
Sequential read 111MB/s, write 109 MB/s
512K read 50 MB/s, write 77MB/s
4K random read .75 MB/s, write 1.79 MB/s
4K/Queue Depth 32 read 2.12 MB/s, write 1.78 MB/s

From the product details, they are built to be used in RAID, have dual processors, and anti-vibration technology. If not for the warmth, I would not know mine was on from touching and listening to it. Vibration felt non-existent. They also carry a 5-year limited warranty.

Cons: Price - you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Note: This was a drive sent to me for review.
I performed a full format when I installed mine - no errors were detected, as I would expect. I did most of my testing with it directly connected to a SATA III port on my Z77-based PC (see results above). I did try it in a NAS enclosure, but that was a consumer model that introduced its own speed problems - an enterprise NAS box with multiple drives in a RAID array would be more suitable for this drive. It did get quite warm, especially in my NAS box, but not too hot.
This drive is intended for reliable 24/7 enterprise storage, as described. Probably overkill for consumers, who can get more storage for less money, but even then, the price is not outrageous even if it's not exactly cheap.
It's faster than any hard drive I have tested so far (although I haven't tried a Velociraptor as I use SSDs for my boot drives). It beat my older 500GB WD Black by quite a margin.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Warranty.

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD2000F9YZ 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: - Very fast shipping by NewEgg. Item was well packed.
- 5 Year Warranty, which is unusually good for mechanical drives.
- Designed with servers in mind, which implies manufacturer’s emphasis on durability and reliability.
- Perfect for devices requiring a lot of “up” time like servers or video surveillance devices.

Cons: - Quality and reliability comes at some extra cost. You can get similarly sized HD’s for much, much less. However, keep in mind that budget drives come with only 2 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: - I installed this this drive into my tower. I then tested a few different SAT A cables. I wanted to see if I could make a SATA cable just disconnect itself from the hard drive. Some cables that I tested were new, and some were used. In the end, each cable stayed firmly attached to the Hard Drive. I experienced no spontaneous disconnects, Similarly, the power cable firmly attached also.
- Once I booted into Windows 8, the PC had no trouble detecting and initiating this drive. HD’s NFTS formatted capacity is 1.81 TB.
- For my tests I transferred around about 790 GB of data that ranged from small .txt files, documents, pictures, .pdf’s, music and large raw video files. I transferred this data from another internal mechanical drive. I observed write speeds hovering around 130 MB/s. I then transferred several gigabits of data from this data to an internal SSD drive. This drive’ read speeds were around 155 MB/s.
- Even during prolonged use, drive’s temperature stays at around 30 degrees Celsius. However, my case is very well vented . I have dual 140 mm intake fans in front that push a lot of air around four of my internal drives.
- The drive is quiet. Even during intensive read/write operations I did not hear this drive much.
- I have no doubts that this drive would perform OK as a boot drive. However, that task is best handled by a dedicated SSD drive.
- I have dealt with WD RMA department in the past, while fixing my friend’s system. WD customer service was very easy to deal with. Once the claim was filed, WD sent me a new HD so I could copy data off my old failing drive. I then “killdisk’d” the old drive and mailed it back to WD in an prepaid container.
- I would recommend this drive for anyone who is looking for a solid and dependable data storage unit and/or video surveillance hard drive. While this review unit had a 2 TB capacity, these particular series of drives also come in 3 and 4 TB capacities.
