5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I've been beating the hell out of this drive for the past month and, it has held up marvelously. I purchased this for a new build, one I planned on replacing an older build with and, proceeded to do what any PC gamer would. I immediately transferred over a terabyte of games over to the drive.

For a high capacity mechanical drive, it's pretty snappy. I've been running some tests with Nvidia's NVENC codec by recording high bitrate sixty fps gameplay footage to the drive. If anyone's looking for a high capacity drive that can handle recording at 1080p 60fps this is the drive for you.

The drive its self is pretty heavy. It feels like a well constructed piece of hardware. I was honestly surprised by its weightiness.

If you have a decent case with proper airflow you'll seldom see temperatures above thirty six degrees. It only runs marginally hotter than the one terabyte black I own.

I've had an all around positive experience, as is usually the case with Western Digital's drives. I have no idea why so many people are receiving dead drives.

Cons: You can really hear those four platters spin. The drive vibrates quite a bit. If you mount it to your cases hard drive trays directly it may resonate through the case. This will also amplify the head seeking noise (click) so, be careful. It's a mechanical drive and, there are clever solutions for this so I'm not going to subtract an egg.

This is a bare bones OEM drive. If you don't have a spare sata cable, order one. I have dozens of the things, they're not very expensive.

Other Thoughts: Don't suffocate the drive! If you're going to purchase a large capacity drive, don't cram it into a drive rack without proper air flow. These will generate more heat than their lower capacity counterparts.

1 out of 5 eggsTale of Woe

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: High capacity, good performance, reasonable price.

Cons: Two out of two drives failed within their first ten days of operation. I lost a considerable amount of time and effort (but no data!) in diagnosing these failures. Both drives passed the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic tests at the time of initial installation.

Other Thoughts: After four years of stable operation, a bad block turned up on one of the drives in my system system containing three 1TB WD1002FAEX drives. That drive failed the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic tests. I returned the failing drive to WD for warranty replacement. Since I was looking for more capacity, I purchased a 2 TB WD2003FZEX drive from Newegg. After installation, that drive passed the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic tests and worked well for almost 10 days. At that point, the system started experiencing intermittent hangs and pauses. Errors appeared in the Windows event log. The new drive then failed the WD Data Lifeguard diagnostic tests. I returned the new drive to Newegg for replacement. After installation, the replacement drive passed the WD DLG diagnostic tests and did not generate entries in the Windows event log. However, when copying data to the drive and running a file comparison program, I got compare errors. I repeated this test (30,000+ files, 56+GB) many times. While the S.M.A.R.T. data showed the drive had not experienced high temperatures, the problem may be temperature related. Early in the day (lower room temperature), I would get no or only only a few compare errors when copyng 30,000+ files. Later in the day (higher room temperature), I would get a few dozen compare errors when copying 30,000+ files. I did not get any errors when running the same test on other drives in the system.

At this point, I have lost confidence. I returned the replacement WD2003FZEX drive to Newegg for refund. I just can't afford the time and effort of yet another cycle of drive installation and diagnostics. I'm going broke paying for the return shipping charges.

From what I know of the industry, premature drive failures do happen, but the probability of getting two consecutive bad drives should be very ... VERY ... small. I really don't know if the problem lies with Western Digital, Newegg or my system. I really think that the issue is WD or Newegg and not my system, but I know that I need to remain open-minded to all possibilities.

On the bright side, I am happy that Newegg's return policies allow me to get out of this seemingly no-win situation with only the loss of those shipping charges.

1 out of 5 eggsWeird

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I haven't been able to install this drive yet.

Cons: I haven't been able to install this drive yet.

Other Thoughts: I received this item today. The box had a single piece of tape on it, but the drive was secured in a "bubble case" that protected it well enough. The drive was in a static bag and that was it. If it wasn't for the drive itself saying WD on it, I wouldn't have a single clue about the drive. Was this not boxed by the OEM? Does it not have ANY documentation even to tell you the specs? No SATA cable? Just a spare drive someone had laying around and threw in a box?

The more disturbing thing came next when I looked at the packing list. Wrong name, wrong address, wrong customer #, wrong shipping method. Was this someone else's RMA??

It's been a while since I bought a HDD and that drive was an IDE drive. It came with an IDE cable (even tho my computer had a spare) and a power connector (even tho I didn't need it). Do drives not come with these basics now?

I will be calling Newegg tomorrow to see what is going on.

Seriously confused.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Impressive performance - I was surprised at the amount of improvement over an older drive. It's worth upgrading if you have SATA 6.

Cons: Arm actuator seems noisier than my older drives. Minor issue and subjective in any case.

5 out of 5 eggsEven Better than the Caviar Blacks

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Run 2C cooler than my 1TB Caviar Blacks. Slightly faster as well.
This is a solid HDD.

Now comes packed much better than before, in a serious heavy duty bubble pack envelope, rather than 2x cheap plastic holders.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Needed more space, bought one of these, couldn't be happier.

1 out of 5 eggsDied Within 36 Hours

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Faster than most HDDs

Cons: Dies faster than most HDDs

Other Thoughts: I bought this to expand capacity over a close to full hard drive. Using partition software, I cloned the old drive onto the new one. The new drive failed within 36 hours of use. Thankfully, between good backup habits and the fact that I left the old drive intact with its data, I lost minimal data.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Blair J., it is unfortunate to find out your drive failed so soon after being purchased. We stand behind our warranty for the duration of the products provided warranty period, and as such, we are here to support our products regardless of the circumstances.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed Within 36 Hours

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Faster than most HDDs

Cons: Dies faster than most HDDs

Other Thoughts: I bought this to expand capacity. I used partition software to copy over the system drive to this one. Thankfully, I only lost a portion of the data created within the 36 hour period due to good backup habits and the fact that I didn't remove any data off of the old drive.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Reliable reputation, Newegg price is great. Not much louder than an older 1TB WD black. WD RMA sounds like it would actually work if I ever needed to use it. [Haven't had a problem with any WD black drives, except one that was DOA. Even all my old WD blue drives are still running.] It's a super fast drive.. I guess my internet connection couldn't max it out, but I did get higher than expected transfer rates from my usb3.0 and my old EIDE drive. Happy with it so far, and expecting a 3TB version shortly.

Cons: Costs a bit more than most. Is louder than my older style 1TB Black.

Other Thoughts: How much of the price is for advertising? Is WD going to improve the overall quality of their products? I've been a fan of WD for over 10 years. I've seen the quality level of some products is hit or miss.... I hope to one day be trusting enough to buy a WD green hard drive or some blue ones once again.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns very well

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast write times, very good in-game loading (rarely have to wait for any loading screen for more than a few seconds), pretty quiet.

Cons: Idk, if it is a windows problem but on occasion it takes a few seconds for highly populated folders to display their files. (Video editing with multiple large files in the same folder) This is kind of a turn off when trying to quickly locate that video file that I know where it is but haven't accessed the drive for a while. (Run on SSD)

Other Thoughts: Overall other than that slight delay, it runs very well and have yet to have issues with it. I am whoring this thing out as far as gaming is concerned and video editing and its taking it like a champ. I would recommend.
