5 out of 5 eggsSo far, So good

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Price, I got these on for a ridiculous price-- from newegg I should note. 2 of them ended up costing me 189.99, so for that price I cannot complain.

Reliability, I have had several of these drives in other rigs, including the one I was replacing, and they have been solid for me.

Size, decent size.

Noise, so far, not so bad. These are basically storage drives for my gaming rig.

Cons: None so far. But time will tell.

2 out of 5 eggsLoud drive big disappointment

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 5 Year warranty wish I could say more

Cons: Very loud seeking and writing had to return it and ordered two 1 TB WD Blue 7200 RPM 64MB drives. They are very fast and you dont even hear them running. WD should just make one color of hard drive and have 5 year warranty on all drives and make it quiet and trustworthy. Too many versions to choose. from. My customer was upset he had to wait on replacements.

Other Thoughts: Be prepared to send it back.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent quality: WD2003FZEX

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast & quiet; 5-yr warranty; easy installation; reliable thus far.

Cons: None regarding hardware; it would be nice if WD would provide equivalent Cylinders/Heads/Sectors info for their (LBA) drives - useful for planning partitions

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these drives back in August 2014; they've both been in service about 1 month now. The drives installed without trouble, and I've since found them to be fast, quiet, and reliable. (I also really like the fact that they have a 5-yr warranty.) I've been able to judge these new WD 'FZEX' drives against some older 'FAEX' drives which the former have recently made obsolete.

I installed the two new drives, as additional drives, in two nearly identical desktop computers that I'd built last summer (2013), each comprising the following base components:
ASUS P8 Z77-V Pro motherboard
Intel Core i7-3770k quad-core processor
8.0 GB Corsair Vengeance (2x4GB) DDR3 SDRAM low profile
WD Caviar Black 1.0 TB hard drive (WD1002FAEX)
Dual-boot OS: Windows 7 Ultimate/Fedora 19

The reason for the additional hard drives was our (family) decision to switch to Linux as the default operating system (OS) on the new machines and to run MS Windows, when necessary, in a virtual machine (VM). On the new drives, we chose to install Fedora 20; this will allow us to run Windows 7 in a VM from its native installation on the original drive. (Eventually, we will wipe the Fedora 19 partitions from the old 1.0 TB drives.)

The original WD1002FAEX drives in both machines have been in service now for about 14 months with zero problems. My assessment of the new WD2003FZEX drives is that they are both faster and quieter than their older counterparts.

I am an electrical engineer, with computing experience dating back to 1983. I've been building my own (non-gaming) home machines since the early 1990's. I typically replace hard drives shortly after they go out of warranty, so, with our usual 3-4 machines at home, I've bought dozens of drives over the years. And I really, really like Western Digital hard drives. I've occasionally had other makes (Maxtor, Seagate, Fujitsu, ...), but WD's have always pleased me most. Our home machines have dual-booted Windows and Linux since 2002, with 2000/XP being the default OS. We've now been using Linux almost exclusively for 6 months, and we are happy with the change. Yes, there is a learning curve, but the benefits far outweigh the costs.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast enough for a HDD, and very sturdy, lots of capacity. Works well so far without a problem

Cons: when I first used it I immediately noticed that it is kinda noisy, especially when on a large load.

Other Thoughts: other than the sound, a very sturdy well working hdd.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I bought many WD black drives in the last 6 years, never had an issue with any of them.
Very fast compared to other hard drives.
Average read speed is ~144 mb/s, access time ~12 msec
Excellent performance for games.
5 years warranty from WD

Cons: It is not an SSD

Other Thoughts: This drive has audible sound especially under load but it is not noisy at all for me. Overall very pleased and happy with this drive.

3 out of 5 eggsLots of room

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Lots of storage

Cons: I do a lot of video editing as well as play games. I bought this HD as a secondary storage unit that is mainly used to house the STEAM installation folder as well raw video footage. After keeping the computer on for long hours at a time I noticed disk speeds dramatically decrease, thus loading times from this hard drive becomes unbearable.

Other Thoughts: Ashampoo WinOptimizer reads the HD in good condition and I still haven't ruled out if the problem is related to my Mobo or not. I'm not worried about it because a simple restart fixes the problem.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black is the best hands down

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Everything in my previous review still stands.

You really don't need an SSD with this drive.

No errors almost a year into operation

Cons: Has started to make the typical HDD noises. It was totally silent at first, but this is pretty typical.

Other Thoughts: After installing this drive almost a year ago, I just sold my SSD. It's not worth the hassle of dealing with two drives. You can tell the SSD is faster, but the end experience isn't really that much different. In my opinion, if my steam games don't all fit on an SSD, then I'd rather just use one big fast HDD.
