1 out of 5 eggsVery upset right now

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Dead on Arrival. System will not complete the format process. I'm upset that there's an issue with it right out of the box. Tried to format, but was unsuccessful. Now the system doesn't even see the drive. What a waste of money. I have to pay to ship it back for an exchange. Defeats the purpose of buying it on sale. Also, before I get the standard manufacturer's apology that they put in unsatisfactory reviews, let them put their money where there mouth is. I shouldn't have to pay for shipping to return a defective drive. So, if a WD rep gets on here, don't bother with an apology or give me a phone number to call unless you're willing to pay my shipping costs for the return.

I'm just sick of the lousy quality control in products today. What do you do? It seems like every brand gets lousy reviews..

Other Thoughts: I'm really tired of issues with hard drives. It's a coin toss anymore whether one will work or not. I never had issues like this years ago. I don't know if it's the manufacturer or the packaging. Doesn't matter, it's still dead and I have to pay for extra shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives, Average Price Point

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Drives perform great for the moderate price point. Formatted capacity is what I would expect (~1.8TB) and installation was easy. From what I can tell these drives are very reliable so I definitely got my moneys worth.

Cons: They are a bit more expensive than some drives but the extra cost is WELL worth it for the reliability and performance. This is not a "bargain" drive but if you want a drive that will last, this is the one.

Other Thoughts: I would definitely recommend these drives and the WD Black series to anyone looking to add/upgrade their data volume in any system. This drive might make an OK primary drive but I would still recommend using SSD disks for OS drives.

2 out of 5 eggsWhat Why

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Nice paper weight

Cons: Drive came in worked for a few days showed no issues, died suddenly and completely out of the blue when I was nearly finished loading everything on a new pc for customer. This has cost me time customer, confidence and money to ship this back for a replacement. I am extremely angry at WD's quality management I buy these drives as they are premium drives and meant to last so you pay premium for them.
1. Quick failure
2. lasted just long enough cost me a whole lot of work.
3. failed without warning.
4. Return service fees

Other Thoughts: I will need to reconsider any WD purchases in the future I thought this kind of failure rate was limited only to their green and blue series of drives. Which should still not have this problem but I have come to expect that. From a black edition drive this a new one on me at the worst time possible.

5 out of 5 eggs1 x WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This drive works fine and there is no notable noise. WD has always treated right with every purchase I have made from them.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought a SSD as my primary or C drive for my operating system. I needed storage and the 1TB drive seemed the most economical method. This is the first time I have bought a 1TB drive. I was a little surprised at the weight. It has the feel of a good solid product. I would recommend this drive for storage.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performance with 2Tb WD Black

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 2 Tb is a good amount of space
5 year warranty
Recognized immediately in Win 7 64bit
Excellent packaging for shipping

Cons: A bit pricey if not on sale
Slightly on the warm side

Other Thoughts: Others have mentioned the noise. I wouldn't consider this drive noisy, but it is definitely audible when under load. Noise to me is when it's excessive or malfunctioning. I can hear this drive when reading \ writing, and it's audible over my case fans when they're on low rpm. Whenever you introduce a new component to a system and it makes a sound that is foreign to what you're used to, it can be disconcerting. So the sound of this drive could be initially worrisome if you're not used to it, but it's not the loud grinding noise that drives make when about to fail. For me the sound is by no means a deal breaker, or a con, as I am used to it and I knew what I was getting into. For some other folks I could see how this could be offputting.

So if you're looking for a dead silent drive, this would not be your choice. However, I rely on the good track record, solid performance, and my own experience with WD Blacks which is positive.

ATTO Benchmark of mine showed ~ 145 MB/s read and 143 MB/s write

AS Benchmark showed 142.31 MB/s sequential read and 140.60 MB/s write

Hard Disk Sentinel Pro shows avge temp of 35 C under load - generally a few degrees warmer than my WD Blue, but still acceptable. That's with an ambient temp of 26 C, a package temp of 29 C, and a 900 rpm fan blowing over the drive in a well ventilated case (6 case fans).

FX 6300 OC'd
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 mobo
Hyper 212 Evo cooler
16 Gb GSkill Ripjaws
GXT 650 Ti boost SC
120 Gb Kingston Hyper X SSD (OS drive)
The above 2 Tb WD Black HDD (some games, some programs, and media)
1 Tb WD Blue (media)
Seasonice S1211 620W PSU
NZXT Source 210 case
6 total case fans

1 out of 5 eggsSecond DOA

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Newegg delivery and RMA were both very fast. Newegg rocks!!!

Cons: First drive would not format and was immediately returned. Second drive also would not format and was returned. Did not give this model a third chance.

Other Thoughts: Newegg was not the problem. This model drive was certainly not the solution for my system.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent backup HDD

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Low-cost, fast, quiet. Newegg's HDD packing was very good; tubes of air totally surrounded it.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I installed 2TB of Samsung SSDs among 4 network computers so I had extra WDC Black Caviar HDDs available to put into an external ProBox (USB3). The drives can be hot-plugged and each computer now has its own HDD for back-up. A nice use of extra HDDs. I have been using WDC HDDs for 20 years and all of them have worked fine, no failures. My first 424MB HDD supported a computer-based cash register for over 15 years straight before being retired. My theory of "bad" HDDs is they were either RAIDed and/or the computer did not have a UPS for solid, clean power. I always use a UPS and never RAID, but that's just me.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, reliable drive so far

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: -Fast
-Reliable
-Quiet

Cons: None so far - only had it for a week, but every WD drive I have ever owned has lasted until I traded up for a new computer.

Other Thoughts: I got a great deal on this drive at the time. Hard to beat 2TB of rock solid drive for the price I got.

All the space I'll probably ever need!
