4 out of 5 eggsWD Black 4 TB Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Vast amounts of storage, with my Steam library and my music library, this thing can handle it all. It it a HDD so there's not *too* much to say but I was able to put two of these in RAID 1 easy as well. My last computer died on me and losing my storage is not something I'm want to reinvest in. I know the WD Red drives are made for RAID, but these Black drives still perform flawlessly with a simple RAID option.

Cons: Noise....
Even before purchasing two of these drives myself, I read the reviews and saw that a lot of people made comments about the noise being too loud.
After installing them with the low noise adapters and taking every precaution I could for the case they went in, the noise is noticeable. However, only one egg was lost because of the exact reason I assumed others were having. The head assembly seems to be the only thing causing the noise, the spindle motor sounds very quiet.
I am not a sound analyst, but I have a massive technical education and experience in electrical and I am very familiar with motor sounds and interpreting them without voiding warranties.

Other Thoughts: They are incredibly responsive and built really solid. If dampening the sound more at the production line affected the performance, then the current noise it creates will be a-okay by me.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive!!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast for a non-SSD. Higher capacity/performance for a good price. Have two other WD Caviar Black drives that have held up real well for over a couple years. Hoping this one will too.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Benchmark tested using Samsung's SSD Magician Utility software on Intel chipset SATAII controller

Sequential Read: 159MB/s
Sequential Write: 150MB/s
Random Read (IOPS): 1222
Random Write (IOPS): 903

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black 1TB Is Awesome

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Really fast, for a mechanical hard drive. The machine boots in minutes and it's good for games.

Cons: Can't make me a 3 egg cheese omelet with bacon

Other Thoughts: I have an Samsung 840 EVO SSD now but I had this drive for about 2 years now and its served me well

5 out of 5 eggsFaster than a Velociraptor drive!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Just as the title suggests, I've compared this 4TB WD Black drive's CrystalDiskMark numbers to a 600GB WD Velociraptor. This drive beats the one I tested. It makes sense that it would; more platters means more data can be accessed per rotation on a single ring regardless of how fast the platters are spinning. Also the platters in this drive are larger diameter, which means 7200rpm at the edge would probably be spinning as fast as the narrower diameter platters of the Velociraptor at 10krpm. Honestly it's time to put the Velociraptor in a museum where it belongs now. Har har har...

Cons: Zip, ziltch, nada.
Move along.

Other Thoughts: Before I copied over data from the two drives this was replacing; I ran CDM for performance numbers. Seeing these numbers I knew I could copy from both drives at the same time without fully saturating it. Absolutely amazing. I was not impressed with the 1TB version of this drive, but I am with this one.
CrystalDiskMark results from blank drive 5 passes of 1GB in MB/s Reads & Writes:

172.2 & 178.1 Sequential
78.34 & 122.8 512K Random
1.102 & 2.462 4K Random
2.426 & 2.354 4K-QD32 Random
I am not joking here; every one of these numbers exceed my Velociraptor test under the same conditions. I am also aware my numbers are higher than others. That is due to either some form of performance lottery for HDDs like the silicon lottery for CPU/GPUs, or more likely is the fact I intentionally tested with nothing else accessing the drive at the time.
Note to reviewers: Optimize your testing environment!

Cons: It is a touch louder than other drives I have owed, but not so much as to be an issue.

4 out of 5 eggsFast and High Capacity

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This is just a quick review.
The second drive works fine and is working flawlessly.
I will post later if anything changes.

Cons: The first drive failed, incrementally by the hour, until it simply dropped out of the system completely

4 out of 5 eggsWish it were actually 4TB

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Does everything I need it to do. Will update depending on longevity.

Cons: Wish it were actually four terabytes. I get about 3.7 TB after it's all set up in Windows. 300GB is a lot of data for marketing to round up from.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HDD

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Large amount of space

I can tell there is a slight speed difference from other drives, so the black series with 64mb cache and 7200rpm is great

Newegg packaged the hard drive perfectly in anti-static bubble wrap, and it fit snuggly in the box to reduce it moving around.

Cons: None so far
