1 out of 5 eggsNew Egg Awesome, WD horrible

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: New Egg stands behind its valued customers! Way to go! New Egg replaced the faulty 4 TB drive with a new one, probably because they know this drive had design/manufacturing issues. The new replacement July 2014 manufactured drive (received August 2014) is silent. The old October 2013 manufactured drive (bought March 2014) was loud and developed SMART surface read-errors after 817 hours of operational time (4 months of calender time).

Cons: WD doesn't care about its customers. WD rushes faulty products to market and offers to replace recently purchased new products with "certified", USED products to cover their 5 year warranty obligation; even after only 4 months of ownership. I attempted to work with the manufacture but they were inflexible and unwilling to send me a new drive even as I complained of having just bought this NEW drive which still had 56 months (93%) of the warranty left. I didn't buy a certified USED drive, and would never trust my data to a refurbished drive; would you? I think WD is erroneously banking on people buying the drive for the 5 year warranty.

Other Thoughts: I will absolutely continue to buy all my gear from New Egg. I've been a customer for over 10 years and I will definitely continue while singing your praises. You guys rock, keep up the good work and remember it isn't all about today's bottom line. Loyalty is earned, not bought!

I will never buy another WD drive, ever. I will attempt to persuade others to stop purchasing WD at every chance I get. The company doesn't seem to understand that the customer experience and the confidence in our data integrity is what we're buying here... not the actual physical device. All storage devices will eventually die, this is to be expected, but not after 7% of the warranty time period has elapsed. If this is uncommon, you'd expect the manufacture to agree to replace this small percentage of failed drives with NEW ones. If this is common, you probably don't want to put your data on these drives... and certainly not a re-certified USED drive. If they can't get it right when new, do you think the odds go up or DOWN on a USED drive? Judging from the other reviews here, these drives have had a lot of problems. To be clear, I don't believe shipping problems are the root cause. My original drive passed all the SMART tests; short, conveyance, and extended, but eventually developed surface read errors.

I think this experience has encouraged me to move on exclusively to SSDs with increased life expectancy (10 Years) and probably from a company more like Samsung which produces the entire drive (end to end), memory chips and all, with high quality control and good customer service. I have one of their 850 Pro vertical NAND drives and it is awesome.

The best part, I don't have to deal with WD.

2 out of 5 eggsGood when they work...

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: When the drives work, they have a lot of room.

Cons: We've been using the 2TB drives for many years now, black-series and RE4. No problems.

Recently started moving forward to the 4TB drives and have had a good share of problems. One drive DOA, another was good for a few weeks before all the data on the drive was unreadable and corrupt. The contents all went bad.

Its a good thing we've replicated this data across numerous drives. So far, defect rates are HIGH. Hopefully things will improve.

5 out of 5 eggsNAS use

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Able to use my thermaltake HD dock and format. all four that I bought were perfect. In all, i have actually gotten 10 WD HDs. Only one that was DOA and warranty of WD took care of it. The problem is that I usually don't have time to tes thte hard drive until after the Newegg standard return policy and WD picks up the slack.

All going in to the newest Synology, but 1514+ not out yet . . . I just tested the drives to ensure they were ready. Back in the box.

WD HD not much else to say. performance as expected.

Cons: you are paying a premium for the brand and support.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Drives

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: These for me are the best hard drives I can find. I have bought many wd black drives over the years and all worked without failure. I have tried some of other brand's best drives and have had failures.

Cons: I have none

Other Thoughts: I buy these when building a new computer. I also get these when reinstalling windows on a computer that has been in service for a while, then use the old wd black boot drive as storage drives. I also use them as external storage drives with a drive dock. My belief, you should always use what ever drive you think is absolutely the best for a boot drive. For me, that applies to storage drives too.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, reliable - 5 year warranty

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The deciding factor for me was the 5-year warranty.

However, I have found these drives to be reliable and they are fast. Very fast.

I have 2 of these in my system.

Cons: None, thus far.

5 out of 5 eggsPackaging nicely finally

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: You must need to buy WD Black in order to get quality packaging. For two drives they used individual boxes, with actual drive shipping containers, the drives themselves surrounded with extra thick padding. I'm used to flimsy drive packaging, but I hope this is a sign that NE wants to get the drives to you safely now and in the future.

Well what else, it's WD Black with 5 year warranty, we know why we buy it. It does run a little hot particularly in a raid array.

Cons: Price, but as usual - coming down. You are paying for that extra two years warranty.

Pros: -Fast (For a HDD)
