3 out of 5 eggsThey all work

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Reasonably priced low-power drives with good performance.

Cons: Shipping accuracy

Other Thoughts: Given the comments here, I ordered drives from two vendors in hopes of sampling different lots for a 7-drive NAS build. All of the drives were run through burn-in and WD Lifeguard tests. Six of the seven passed with no errors of any kind. The seventh (Newegg) drive turned out to be 2TB instead of the ordered 4TB and was not tested. I am still hoping to resolve the issue with this drive despite two unanswered attempts so far. Perhaps Christmas is clogging the pipes.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome drives.

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: I bought 5 of these last christmas to add to a synology nas. They have all worked flawlessly so far. Still no reallocated sectors on any of the drives. I just ordered 5 more of the 4tb reds to add to a Unraid nas that i'm building. I'm pretty much sold on WD red drives and will be buying even more in the future. Just wish the 6tb reds would come down in price.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY FROM NEWEGG

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: There is nothing wrong with the drive. It works extremely well.

Cons: The problem is with newegg. They are distributing an old version of this drive with and old firmware that is not upgradable. When calling and emailing support, no one at newegg even knew what a firmware was. The told me to call WD if you can believe that. WD has had their NASware 3.0 out for quite a while. This drive has the old 2.0.

Other Thoughts: This is a problem with installing on RAID arrays that have the newer NASware 3.0.

4 out of 5 eggsMine work

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: My two drives are working great in my NAS. Lower temps compared to the seagate drives they replaced. No bad sectors.

Cons: Worried about long term reliability based on other user's problems with these drives. .

Other Thoughts: Worried about reliability. I did the long test when the drives arrived and they passed with flying colors. SMART stats show no problems after one month in my NAS BUT I am worried as other have had major problems and there is a really high DOA and infant mortality rate. I am knocking a star off for all the worry about the drives failing early.

1 out of 5 eggsSadly disk IO errors after 35 days

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Previous WD quality - had no problems with many other drives in previous years

Cons: Just after the 30 day refund period, the new WD red 4 TB drive started getting IO errors. I have many WD drives and have not run into problems like this in the past. Tried to reformat/repartition but still get read/write errors. Need to now deal with WD since 35 days have lapsed since I purchased the drive. I hope this was just a bad single drive - this is my first 1 star review due to poor MTBF.

5 out of 5 eggsReview from over a year's use (9 drives)

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: - When on sale, they are a good price
- Reliable
- Work well in NAS

Cons: - Not the fastest drives around

Other Thoughts: The usage (because how you use the drives is an important factor):
I have 2 NAS units running in a home network, one running 5 x 2TB reds (JBOD), one running 4 x 4TB reds (ZFS raid 10). I bought the 2TB drives in 2012, the 4TB drives in 2013. The NAS running the 2TB drives was running 24/7 for about 7 months, now is used about once a month. The NAS using the 4TB drives has been running 24/7 with the exception of an occasional power loss that is long enough to run out the battery on my UPS and when I got a new replacement NAS.

The shipping:
No drives arrived to me DOA. The 4TB drives were packed in these semi-hard bubble bags with a top that lifts open. Pretty clever little bags. I kept them. Newegg ships lightning fast most of the time. My biggest issue is with my delivery guy who seems to like to leave expensive little packages in any small puddle he can find next to the garage door.

The summary:
The drives have been rock solid. They're not the fastest, but some of that has to do with my NAS units. I recently replaced one and now they are much faster. I access the NAS many times throughout the day and stream videos as well, and haven't had any issues. I run a bad black scan about once a year, never any issues. The fact that there really isn't anything bad I can say about them (and I'm not shy about blasting people when they need it) actually says a lot about how good these drives have been.

The future:
I'll get more of both the 2TB and 4TB drives (as cash allows), as soon as the price gets where I want it again. Probably for Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

4 out of 5 eggsNASware 3.0, packaging, Iron Egg guarantee

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Just recently bought two new 4TB WD Red drives as an external drive. Did the just start delivering NASware 3.0-equipped drives? I'm also surprised how the hard drive was packaged - rather than air bubbles, it was inside a box - with PLASTIC SUPPORTS!

Cons: Seems like the SMART function is a bit messed up, but I placed the two drives inside a NexStar MX, so I'm not sure if it's the drive's fault or the enclosure's fault. I may update this in the future if these drives' SMART capabilities act as normal if I put it outside the NexStar MX enclosure (e.g. inside my desktop computer tower). Reliability remains to be seen, but if the plastic supports-shipped hard drives can last over a year, that will be awesome.

Other Thoughts: Since I bought this as an external drive and not a NAS, it was a bit of a gamble, especially after reading some questionable reviews, some of which were about the packaging of the drives itself. But when I got the drives, it was shipped with *conventional* plastic supports rather than the air bubble packaging that can be suspectible to punctures and pose a threat to hard drives' integrity. I was surprised that Newegg shipped my hard drives that way rather than the air bubble packaging! Hopefully these drives will actually last for years rather than days, weeks or months, especially when I am trying to rearrange my hard drives for storing all those Japanese pop stuff, and even buying an SSD (shipped separately) to replace my hard drive on my laptop (the laptop hard drive is being repurposed as an external drive).

I just wish if Newegg use plastic supports more often when packing hard drives in a brown box, rather than air bubble packaging. (My drives were shipped from Baldwin Park, southern California via UPS, along with the NexStar MX enclosure and another NexStar enclosure for my 2.5" hard drive from the laptop that is being replaced by the SSD.)

If I see anything significant, I will plan to update this in the future. As of the time of posting, it is covered by Newegg's Holiday Iron Egg Guarantee, so I can replace - or even return - these drives directly to Newegg as late as January 2015, and even not paying a single penny for a restocking fee. I'm glad that with Iron Egg I have an opportunity to try out those WD Red hard drives pretty much risk-free until January 2015.

1 out of 5 eggs50% DOA and counting

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: These drives are supposed to be good for NAS.
There was a sale.

Cons: I read the feedback before, so I downloaded Western Digital Data Lifeguard tool to do a full test.
So far, the first 2 disks I tested (out of 4) have been DOA. i.e. "too many bad sectors" error, at not even 30% surface scan.
I'll test the other 2 disks over the week-end to RMA all bad drives together.
I'll update my post with the total DOA count.

Other Thoughts: Other online site do not seem to have man DOA reviews for the same model. So I would guess that either Newegg got a bad batch from the factory, or the pallet fell off the dock/truck somewhere damaging all drives and nobody noticed. Usually pallets have G force sensors on them for these kind of equipment and should show if acceleration was too high, but who knows.
Not newegg's fault, but maybe they should consider asking WD to take back all their stock and give them a different lot.
Overall I'm super disappointed in WD.

5 out of 5 eggsNice drives, hope they last

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: NewEgg is now shipping these drives with NASWare 3.0 firmware instead of the listed NASWare 2.0.

Great performance. Very low energy consumption, and produces very little heat, all very nice for NAS.

Bought 4 of them at a great deal ($150 each), and all passed the long SMART test. Each test runs for a bit over 9 hours, and was fairly consistent between the drives I had. So far my NAS has been running for about a month of light usage (streaming a couple of movies every day). Short SMART tests are ran regularly, luckily no signs of any failure yet. Hope they keep it that way.

Cons: The drive produces very little spinning noise, but the clicking noise is clearly audible. With all 4 of them working together in the NAS it could get pretty loud.

Other Thoughts: The serial numbers of the drives I received are very far apart. Does that mean NewEgg is buying them from different production lines and mixing them up when selling to the customers? Seems plausible to me.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat solid drive

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: I have 3 of these drives in my Synology NAS and looking to add the 4th soon since the prices have gone down. Drive works, and have had no issues. WD makes some of the best drives and these RED's rock and are solid performers.

Cons: High Price is about all
