5 out of 5 eggsDecent Drive for RAID Applications

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: I have bought quantity 20+ of these 3 TB drives, and various quantities of the 2TB and 1TB units over the past two years. I haven't had a single failure. I like the fact that they can talk to RAID cards without generating array failure errors simply because of timing issues.

Cons: The variable spin-rate feature is interesting, but I would prefer that they simply spin at the highest RPM all the time to improve access times. Speed-wise I have no complaints since I use them primarily for archiving purposes.

1 out of 5 eggsNothing good so far

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: None

Cons: DOA
Won't partition, format, or be recognized by Windows
Damaged on arrival

Other Thoughts: I have been looking to build a 6 drive RAID setup for media storage. Not wanting to do it all in one step I figured I would buy one of these drives to test it out. I read through many many reviews of this model right here on Newegg. The 3 egg average was of obvious concern, but reviews on other sites were much more positive so I just figured most people leaving reviews here were ones that had negative experiences, so I went ahead and purchased one.

It arrived in the mail this morning, and I got into opening. To my horror I noticed there was a small dent and associated damage to the drive label on the front which was surprising to me. Since this drive wasn't going to be seen anyway I figured it was no big deal.

I proceed to hook it up as a secondary drive and reboot. Running Windows 8.1 x64 it seemed to take forever to boot up. Once in I proceeded to run WD Data Lifeguard. The drive was recognized as being physically present and SMART check passed. Then tried to do extended tests on the drive and it failed. All further attempts to partition and format the drive also failed with 3 different software suites.

I also tried the same on another computer which had the same result. So now after waiting a week to get the drive, I've had to put it through the RMA process which is gonna take another week and a half to replace.

I have 2 other WD drives, 1 Samsung, and 1 Toshiba and none of them have had any issues. Based on the reviews I've read this particular model and capacity is really a total bust, and I would recommend people not get curious and try their luck.

I will update my review when I get the replacement.

2 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: One of the two drives works as advertised. I would probably list that under "things you expect when you buy a product" and not "pros."

Cons: One of the two drives dead on arrival.

Other Thoughts: It seems like quite a few of these drives have been DOA as reported by other users. These Red NAS drives do cost a bit more than standard desktop drives, it would be nice if WD had a bit more stringent QA.

3 out of 5 eggs4 Of 6 Drives Ordered Worked

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: 3yr warranty. .Price at the time of purchase.

I've had my NAS server up and running for about 2 days now. So far so good. Only time will tell how reliable these drives really are.

5 out of 6 drives seem to be working fine.

Edit to previous review:
Now 4 of the 6 drives seem to be working fine.

Cons: One of the drives keeps failing when trying to do a full zero write/format to all of the disc's sectors. Tried switching the SATA cable, MB SATA connector and power connector with one of the other good drives. Nothing seemed to help. Sent it back to Newegg. Hopefully they will process my return quickly. As I'm short the capacity I was expecting to have. Fingers crossed the replacement is not another bad drive.

Edit to previous review:
A second drive has failed S.M.A.R.T. tests. Had to send it back.

Other Thoughts: I couldn't give this a 5 Egg rating because of the failed disc. These are my first NAS specific drives. So far I am happy with the speed and quality of the working discs. Looking forward to having all 6 discs fully functional!

Edit to previous review:
Taking another star off of my previous rating. Was 4 out of 5 stars. Will now be 3 out of 5 stars. It's been almost 3 weeks since my initial order was placed and I'm still waiting on 6 working HDDs for a fully functional NAS.

2 out of 5 eggsReturned at a loss

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Supposedly high capacity and compatibility

Cons: My storage array failed to recognize it beyond 750GB - turning the purchase into a nuisance.

Other Thoughts: A better compatibility/incompatibility list.

5 out of 5 eggsAll working fine

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Bought five (over a few different orders) and have them in my drobo 5D. Never had any problems with the 3T versions.

Cons: None.. They just hum away in my drobo.

Other Thoughts: Been depending on WD drives now for two years. Ordering WD exclusively for all new purchases. Had others go bad too quickly. Also have 4T and 2T WD drives.
Did have (2) 4T WD drives arrive bad (looked like they had been hit with something in transit) and NewEgg was great with the return and immediately replaced. The new ones are working great.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: These drives work as advertised. I have used them in a Synology 214+ and in an external USB enclosure.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I bought them in a three pack, saved a few dollars.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent drive

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Purchased four drives and did the full extended test on each drive with WD's DLGDIAG tool and everything passed.

Just over a month in and the drives are actively being monitored without any issues.

+Low temperatures and low noise
+Price

Cons: It's a drive, it will die someday, expect it and prepare

Other Thoughts: Using in a NAS RAID Server 2012 environment.
