5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Great sound and flexibility with the microphone protected in the headset itself.

Cons: Really can't find anything to gripe about.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for microphone built into a headset then I would suggest buying this model.

3 out of 5 eggsServiceable mid-range headset

Pros: In general, these provide good sound quality - with the caveat that they require a high quality audio output. With a high quality output, sound is clean and detailed with good mids. Its design is in my opinion equal to the Siberia in appearance. It's also quite comfortable - generous padding, light clamp force, and a light plastic construction make this headset easy on the head and ears. The three-piece detachable headband and earcups are another great feature. Retractable microphone is nice and voice quality is excellent. Cords and connectors are also of good quality.

Cons: Unfortunately, a few issues keep the 5Hv3 from reaching the higher echelons of Siberias and other headsets. First off, this headset requires a good audio source with quality processing and amplification - your old iPod will sound terrible plugged into these, as will most integrated audio on motherboards. Using my HT Omega Claro Halo card with its much better hardware amplification, sound quality was vastly better than with my iPhone 6 or the onboard Realtek on my Y410P laptop. Also, plastic construction casts doubts on its longevity and durability and the detachable disassembly mechanism, while it has its positives, lacks structural integrity. All of this makes it even more troubling that Steelseries didn't include a protective case.

Other Thoughts: This headset is acceptable, with engineering suitable for games, movies, and passable for music. Unfortunately, less than excellent plastic construction cheapens the headset, and the disassembly feature simply creates locations for damage. The lack of a case also makes it more susceptible to scratching. Hopefully the 5Hv4 will introduce better materials that truly warrant the premium price tag.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very comfortable to wear and keep around my neck when not in use. The installed ear cuffs seat comfortably around my large ears. They don't cause me to perspire during prolonged wear, as most headphones that engulf the ears tend to do so. The included adaptors are convenient, one for mobile devices, and one for desktop applications. The retractable microphone is an amazing feature that I wish more headphones had. The microphone quality was superb compared to other devices when transmitting vocals. The inline volume/microphone switch is very easy to use and is easily accessible. I tend to forget I keep the mic muted when not in use. These headphones make phone calls that much more bearable as audio is transmitted in stereo.

Cons: Regarding audio quality, these headphones are designed for vocal quality. The bass response is very limited; the sound of bass passing through each speaker is muffled/damp. Adjusting the software equalizer does not help much, however, these headphones will demonstrate the differences between low and high bitrate audio samples. Low and very high frequencies tend to sound distorted. The cable length for the short adaptor is a bit short, but works for stationary purposes. These headphones don't fold up compared to others, and there is some resistance when retracting the earphones.

4 out of 5 eggsVery decent

Pros: They look pretty nice, light weight, fit pretty well and had enough adjustment to fit me comfortably. The sound quality is far above any in-ear phones. The retracting microphone is a neat feature, retracts and pulls out easily. The mic is flexible to make the perfect adjustment of mic position. The mic also picks up voice nicely.

The cables and connectors appear to be of above average construction, superior to original iPhone accessories and gaming headset competitors. I don't sing cable praises easily and believe they are usually the first poi t of failure, so I'm very pleased with these.

The cables all seemed to be the right length for hand held devices and a desktop PC with the tower under the desk.

Cons: The packaging is barebones. I believe it is sufficient to ship the product safely, but lacks the presentation that many other products have which generate great first impressions.

The instructions were lacking. Headphones are not rocket science and we managed to get them working on phones tablets in minutes. The PC connector cable is a little more involved, but also not a big deal.

While it is not advertised as a console gaming headset, I was a little stumped when I tried to make it work with the Xbox 360. Nowhere in the documentation did it specify which devices it supports. It's entry on the newegg website does include a list of supported devices, so I can't fault them terribly for that. I might like to see that it does NOT support Xbox 360. Competitors sell solutions that fit all of the above, sound almost as good and cost less.

It turns out we have a competitor's solution for XB360 that has the four contact minjack socket to plug any headphones into. Tis jack did not fit because of the 90 degree angle on the jack. I think I prefer a straight jack in every case and that would have allowed us to put in many testing hours on the XB360. Probably some prefer angled and we did not have any issues with using them with any of the four handheld devices we tried.

The sound quality is good enough to tell the difference between compressed music on a handheld and lossless from the PC. For gaming and voice it is completely satisfactory. I do have a set of wireless headphones (with no mic) that cost only 50% more and sound noticeably better for music and in game sounds.

Other Thoughts: Generally a very solid offering and the sound is pretty good for the price. If asked for a recommendation of a gaming headset, I am not sure I would have them at the top of the list. Definitely a close second, but not for consoles.

4 out of 5 eggsGood sounding headphones

Pros: The 5Hv3 are a light feeling good sounding set of headphones. I tried these out playing games, listening to music and for voice over IP phone calls. They performed well in all situations. The ear cups are soft and padded and did a good job of sealing around my ears and blocking out ambient noise. The microphone is stowed in the left earcup and pulls out easily. It is flexible and will stay put in whatever position you bend it to. The attached cord has two 3.5mm plugs for mic and headphones. There is an inline volume control and mic mute switch. There are two cable extensions that are included. One is 7ft long and is the extension for the 3.5mm plugs for mic and headphones. The second cable is a shorter 5 inch cable for use with cell phones and portable devices. Without extensions the headphone cable is about 4 feet long. The head band is adjustable and expands easily. The earcups are mounted so that they can pivot to conform to your head's shape.

Cons: The 5Hv3 lacked punch on the low end. When playing games, explosions did not have the deep bass sound you would expect. When listening to music, I adjusted the EQ on my sound card but that did not add a lot. The bass was muddy.

Other Thoughts: The sound quality was very good and it made for a very immersive experience when gaming. I could hear footsteps clearly when players were running or walking. When using the microphone, I had to add a little bit of gain via the Windows control panel. After doing this, no one had any problems hearing me on conference calls or while talking to my teammates playing games. If there was more bass, this would be my favorite gaming headphones.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent cheap alternative from a respected gaming co.

Pros: Very lightweight. Their lack of weight makes them easy to wear for extended periods of time.
The microphone works and recorded a very nice sample of my voice. Retractability is also a plus, no clue there's a mic when listening to music.
Could be a very affordable option for online gaming.
The extension cord that comes with this model is a nice addition, measured almost 7'.

Cons: Not a short cord length but...
I feel i have graduated passed cords. This would be the only setback if I was thinking of purchasing.
Also, sound is not very well amplified. Not very loud compared to my Bluetooth headphones or my Bluetooth earpiece.

Other Thoughts: Have had wireless headphones, gamepads, even had a couple good pairs of wireless gaming keyboard & mice. If you need a cord it needs to have super-7.1 digital surround+ and/or charging capabilities for it's wireless use.
I have spent an hour or two at the bar this morning after work and am now listening to(blasting as much as possible) The Steve Miller Band's Children of The Future album through these headphones and it is just lacking the volume & depth a little more money or a little more research could probably find you in the headphone\headset world...
SteelSeries has put out some interesting hardware in the past but these 5Hv/3 Gaming Headsets are just not one of those products in my opinion.
...Beauty of time is that it's snowing...

4 out of 5 eggsSteelSeries 5Hv3 Gaming Headset

Pros: The 5Hv3 is an update to the 5Hv2, The new 5Hv3 has all the same features with a three piece assembly, padded ear pads, in-line controls, braided cable, and retractable microphone but now with a few changes to the headset’s appearance and accessory cables for mobile device's. The 5Hv3 has two swappable cable ends, one for computers and one for mobiles devices ,and an extension cable for the headphone and microphone. The ear pads are mounted on hinges and have an adjustable headband. It has a very light construction and the ear pads are of a vinyl material which can cause them to get a bit sweaty, cloth would have been a better option in my opinion. The microphone is very flexible allowing you to bend it in any shape. The 5Hv3 has no carrying case or bag to preventing scratches during transport, The braided cable has an inline remote control with a volume slider and mic mute switch, and is a bit short when using the single 3.5 mm plug.

Cons: Now as far as con go their is not very many, I did not like the vinyl ear pads because after extended use can cause them to get a bit sweaty and cloth ear pads would have been a better option, and the other thing I did not like that it is rather expensive at $80 their is a lot of better 5.1 wireless headsets around that price point that sound so much better.

Other Thoughts: SteelSeries 5Hv3 Gaming Headset great the sound quality is crisp, clean and clear even if it is used on a laptop or phone it will still sound almost as good as if it were plugged into a dedicated sound card, if you can get the 5Hv3 for around $ 50 than I would pick it up but at $80 me personally I would get a pair of 5.1 surround sound wireless gaming headset for that kind of money. I know its SteelSeries and their a good high end quality company $80 msrp. a bit pricey.

4 out of 5 eggsDon't Step on them.

Pros: Light
Retractable microphone
Wire length can be changed
Control on the wire easy to use

Cons: Can be broken Easily, not for young children
Not for Audiophiles

Other Thoughts: There are a lot bad said about these but the truth is the Weakness of these headphones are actually their strength. They are Light and manageable for hours of non tiring use. The Wire can be elongated for distance to the machine using it. Its great for Skype, Gaming, Music and I loved using it for Streaming Movies. They feel great on your ears and don't hurt you. But they are not made of steel or have a 20 oz magnet on the voice coil of the speakers. They are not made for that. These are quality and lightweight and confortable, Stylish and easy to store or to travel with.. I love them. I gave them one less egg because they are not Audiophile Headsets but you would pay a lot more for those and they would hurt after an hour of wearing them

4 out of 5 eggsHead Trip!

Pros: These are great headphones! The sound reproduction to my 45 year old ears is pretty good. The retractable microphone is a nice feature but I wonder how long it will last before it fails or gets stuck. The headphones are very light and my ears did not get supper warm like a heavier head set can cause. The covered cord is a nice touch and there is an in line mute button for the microphone. Included is an extension cable and a separate cable for use with your cell phone.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The microphone retraction could be a weak spot in the design and at the same time it's a niece feature. Time will tell.
