5 out of 5 eggsUpdate after 1 week

This review is from: Blu Life Play S L150U Dark Blue 3G Quad-core 1.3 GHz Unlocked GSM Dual-SIM Android Cell Phone

Pros: Still an awesome value for the hardware!

Cons: Can't replace battery (well, not via user-acceptable procedures. Can always disassemble). Confirmed by tech support.

Other Thoughts: Just a quick update to my review of this phone now that I've had it for a while. I still give it 5 because the value is so good, but:
A - Battery is NOT user-removable (heard back from their tech support). In theory you could disassemble the phone though. Appears previous BLU Play Life version (with plastic back cover instead of aluminum) allowed that. That's a step in the wrong direction IMHO.
B. I said it wasn't blue. In the proper light, it does have a slight very dark blue to it. But most would just call it black or dark grey. Still looks good though.

Their documentation clearly states to remove the battery when replacing SIM/SD cards, but that's impossible so it needs updating. But if iPhones can get away with a non-removable battery, I can't really ding BLU for it with this cheap of a phone! I still remain quite happy with my phone, but honestly I think the longevity of the phone is limited since the battery can't be changed (all batteries die eventually as evidenced by every laptop I've ever owned!)

So still 5 eggs with a caveat that it wouldn't be if the phone weren't such a danged good phone for the price! *And I wish Newegg let me edit my previous review after some time goes by and experience teaches buyers more about the products.

5 out of 5 eggsHands-on 1st full day with Blu Life Play S L150U

This review is from: Blu Life Play S L150U Dark Blue 3G Quad-core 1.3 GHz Unlocked GSM Dual-SIM Android Cell Phone

Pros: Inexpensive. Quad-Core. Nearly pure Android 4.2. Very thin. Large, beautiful display. Good battery life (so far). Inexpensive (oh, did I mention that already?). All the bells and whistles except LTE. Comes with screen protector and gel case. Aluminum back (apparently that's the major change from the previous version).

Cons: Not a "big name" company (yet) so limited availability of 3rd party products.
Documentation could be improved.
MAYBE can't change battery(!). But this could be documentation problem too. Not sure yet.
No Mass Storage mode for USB connection (but this is an Android problem really so not truly a con for this phone).

Other Thoughts: Replacing a Samsung Galaxy S2 and using W.M. Family Mobile (T-Mobile network). I actually loved the S2, but needed a new one and they don't sell them anymore and S3s were too expensive for my budget. Wanted to try a BLU after reading similar phone specs and give it a shot. So far, VERY happy. I don't like the loss of Mass Storage mode in USB - but that's something to get mad at Google about with their newer Android versions. Granted I've only been playing with it for a day, but so far it's been great! I've also heard horror stories of the USB/charging connector going bad after a while - though that was on the former BLU Life Play version so maybe they've fixed this. Biggest problem so far is I've no idea how to get to the battery. You can remove the top back to insert SIM/SD cards, but as of yet I've no clue how to actually remove the main aluminum back to get to the battery! (And I do plan to have multiple batteries. If the USB charging port really does go, that's my only alternative - external charger!) Their documentation is WOEFULLY inadequate. Even figuring out how to remove the top-back cover was completely missing from the manual. It literally said "remove back cover and battery and insert SIM card and SD card" with no pictures whatsoever on HOW to do that. I found a PDF on their support site that showed a picture of how to slide the top-back up and off to access the slots, but even it said to remove the battery BUT SHOWED NO CLUE ON HOW TO DO THAT! Bad docs, though, have to be expected on a cheap phone essentially from China, and at least for now I'm ok with it. (Though about 1 hour after receiving the phone I'd not have said that as I was trying desperately to remove the aluminum cover and losing fingernails!)
Other thoughts - charging port at the top is weird, but not that big of a problem. Can get 3G from Family Mobile but no higher speed - not a big data user though and it seems fine for my needs (Waze works fine and browsing basic sites is quick enough.) Screen a big improvement over Galaxy S2 - only slightly larger but much prettier. Not a picture taker either so camera I don't really know or care about. I'm sure it's fine for my limited uses. Also, I don't "game" on this so 3D speed is not an issue for me. (I game on my PC at home. Seems silly to try and duplicate that experience on a phone, but I guess some people do). Runs Spades and Hearts just fine and that's about the extent of my "gaming" needs. Dropped it once already (without the gel case or screen protector in place). Caught it with my shoe before it scuttled off across the driveway a bit. No harm (at all) done. So it's not too fragile anyway. (Unlike my galaxy that had silver edges that were definitely planned obsolescence). Finally, mine isn't dark blue - it's grey. No complaints here, but it seems likely that somewhere in the process there was a mixup between Newegg and BLU. I don't care - but if you do, could be an issue.
