4 out of 5 eggsVAST Improvements Over Previous AVR's

Pros: Lots of capabilities, especially connecting to other Sony equipment.
Plenty of connection interfaces/ports.
On-screen graphics for system configuration/setup.
Good, clean crisp high quality sound.

Cons: The Wi-Fi connection on this AVR seems to be weak and lacking when it comes to connecting to wireless routers as I've had nothing but problems with it using Wi-Fi; plugged in an Ethernet cable, updated the firmware and used some of the Wi-Fi features and I absolutely love it, but what stinks is that now I have to run an Ethernet cable about 60 feet underneath the carpet in an apartment all because it appears to me Sony went "cheap" on whomever they outsourced the NIC chipset to!

The ONLY time I can get on-screen graphics like the volume graphic to show up on the TV is when I am in the Sony GUI, otherwise you have to squint to see the LCD display on the front of the receiver to see the volume settings. I've tried EVERYTHIING but haven't found a solution, the only thing I could think of is was to program my DVR/Cable Box remote code into the Sony remote control; unfortunately my DVR/Cable Box is a Cisco which isn't listed in the Sony STRDN1040 users' guide so there are NO codes available. I tried the codes for Scientific Atlanta and none of them worked so I don't know what this is working the way it is as I would certainly think Sony would want their AVR to have on-screen graphics for volume, channel etc.??

Other Thoughts: I got this receiver for $499.99 as it's a 2013 model and that seems to be the going rate across the net. I've always purchased Sony products fully knowing I am paying a bit more for the name, however in return I would always receive a certain level of quality as well as familiarity with functionality, even with the knock off of 1 egg due to my "Cons"; once again Sony delivers a great product and not a bad price either!

5 out of 5 eggsSONY STRDN1040

Pros: I choose this receiver because this one supports 4k. It has plenty HDMI port, and the sound quality is better than I expected. The price is not that expensive compare to the others that supports 4k. I think it is a very good deal.

Cons: none so far. However, I don't like the remote control. But, I guess it is not a big deal.

5 out of 5 eggsWHAT a TREAT!

Pros: Numero UNO: The SOUNDs are unbelievable from this AVR - it's the BEST AVR I have ever owned! I am now hearing things that I never knew existed in ads and sound tracks. Also - Bonus for me is being able to receive/listen to Pandora and other OTA Radio too.

Cons: Unable to synch up remote with the DTV Remote so I have to use both remotes [volume/mute]

Other Thoughts: GLAD I replaced my Pioneer 1019 with this Sony 1040!

5 out of 5 eggsSimply Awesome

Pros: Great power per channel
Very easy auto setup that sounds amazing
The HD surround sound is the best sounding setting I have ever heard. This system is worth every penny.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that the large remote doesn't control any of my other equipment but to be fair no other system that I know of includes a remote that does

Other Thoughts: I purchased this from BB for 100 less and after checking prices online after the fact I can't believe I got such a great deal. I think the price on Newegg is $100 less than other online retailers so this is a pretty good price as well. This was a last minute purchased when I bought the Xbox one and realized my old Onkyo only had 2 HDMI ports and I realized I needed a better receiver so I purchased what looked like the best specs for what was a great price.
I plugged everything in as it was labeled on the back. I thought it was pretty cool to label the HDMI ports so you get the best performance and after running the auto tuner using the included mic set it to high-def theater mode. after reading the description I had to try it and I was not disappointed. I was up and running in about 20 mins from the moment I opened the box until the auto calibration completed with everything plugged in and ready to go. The movies I watched that night were movies that I had seen before but with this system it was a completely different level than anything I have heard before and the HD setting actually improved the movie experience and I heard things I had never noticed before. My old system was a 5.1 and I was still using the same speakers (I have not purchased 2 new fronts yet) but the old speakers sounded so much better on this system it was like night and day and Sony had lifted the cloak and brought me into the daylight.
As you can tell I really love this system I'm not an audiophile but I do recognize quality when I see or in this case hear it. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. With 165 watts a channel and 4k supported and up-converted you can't beat it for this price and with these options its a no brainier, just get it :)

5 out of 5 eggsBest OVERALL for the money

Pros: Connects to everything electronic...even a soda machine....ok not that. If you're looking for a receiver and have to by a wireless...add $100...this receiver has all the connectivity you could ask, blu-ray, mp3, tablet...and stuff even for the apple lovers...It cranks enough power, without any audible distortion with quality speakers. You have options for speaker configuration, too. Either speakers to another area, or the front height speakers. The design is sleek, and the interface is so much easier to navigate than the Yamaha, harman kardon, Pioneer...which I have owned over the past 3 years...I am sticking with this SONY!!!!

Cons: I would like a better eq...something with more range...14 band would be nice, since the configuration doesn't allow for a pre-amp.

5 out of 5 eggsSignificant upgrade

Pros: 4K video capable.
Lots of inputs
Setup was really easy. Setup immediately detected that one of the surround sound speakers wasn't working. A quick examination showed a loose wire on the speaker.
Sound quality is excellent and reveals that I need to change out the rest of the speakers sooner or later. I now hear the problems.
Airplay is a hit with the kids who stream from their iPads.

Cons: None really. There's a new line but this meets my needs and last year's model is cheaper than the latest one.

Other Thoughts: This was an upgrade from an early Onkyo 7.1 Home-Theater in a box offering. I had already upgraded center speaker (big difference) and now the Sony Receiver.
The main reason for the upgrade was a requirement for at least one more HDMI input. The original receiver had only 2 HDMI inputs and they were the older spec. New one has several more and 3 are 4k capable.
I'm using this with Logitech smart hub. Really convenient!

5 out of 5 eggsTop mid-range AVR in 2013...

Pros: The Sony STR-DN1040 is the top mid-range AVR for 2013. Sony has pushed technology down from the higher end ES line of AVRs, and this receiver is hitting above its class. Excellent sound quality & ample, clean power in excess of 80 watts per channel with 7 channels driven @ 1% total harmonic distortion (bench output numbers shown below). Superb video from a multitude of inputs. Bluetooth, WiFi, & AirPlay. The onscreen UI is top notch, and very responsive. HDMI switching is very fast. Tons of soundfield/stage options.

Channels Driven / THD / Power Output

2 / .1% / 122.6 watts
2 / 1% / 135.9 watts
5 / .1% / 76.3 watts
5 / 1% / 89.3 watts
7 / .1% / 65.3 watts
7 / 1% / 82.9 watts

Cons: None so far. Will update if any issues crop up.

It should be noted that there are no zone 1 pre-outs for combining this with an external amp (zone 2 only has pre-outs). However, this AVR should provide ample power for most home theater setups.

Other Thoughts: I did not purchase this from Newegg, as it has not been in stock for several weeks. But I was able to find it from an Sony authorized online dealer for quite a bit less than MSRP. I'm pairing this AVR up with the Polk Audio New Monitor series of speakers in cherry (75T front L/R, 25C center, 65T rear/sides, and 45B bookshelves which I did get from Newegg for an incredible price).

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Product

Pros: The DN1040 is the highest rated receiver for its price range and the praise is well-deserved! My purchase of the 1040 was to complete our home theater room and I have to say that this receiver exceeded expectations. Having two HDMI outputs, we have a monitor and a Cinema projector connected to the 1040. We enjoy our movies on a 100" screen or with a push of a button, our movies can be shown on the monitor. Additionally, having so many HDMI inputs, we also have an AV computer connected to the receiver. Being completely configurable, we have the computer video connected with HDMI and the audio connected by a Tosslink cable from my sound card in the computer to the 1040 - WOW - I was literally blown away listening to our MP3 files through this receiver!

Cons: There are NONE

Other Thoughts: The DN 1040 has plenty of power to drive all of my speakers. Currently, we have four of the top line JBL speakers (five speakers per cabinet) connected to the front and back, two JBL side speakers (two speakers per cabinet), Polk Center Speakers (three speakers in the cabinet), and two Energy sub Woofers for a total of 29 individual speakers. Having upgraded to the DN-1040 was a great choice.
