1 out of 5 eggsDIR-850L

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Works Great out of the box, an for awhile I've. had this DIR850L Router about six months and Then your on barrowed time until you have to start baby sitting the thing it degrades your internet signal strength over time and or drops it all together. then you misteriously I have bought a lot of computer equipment from newegg and I will continue to do so its a great place to find what you need . this is vendor issue (it's on you D-LINK)

Cons: Works Great out of the box, and for a while I've. Had this DIR850L Router about six months and then you’re on borrowed time until you have to start babysitting the thing it degrades your internet signal strength over time and or drops it all together. Then you mysteriously start losing other connections on your network I could go on and on but I defiantly don’t recommend buying one of these it’s a waste of money

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate the feedback as we truly value the input and we are sorry to hear that you are encountering issues with the product. D-Link advises that you factory reset the camera (by pressing the reset button the back with a paper clip for 10 seconds) and then download and install the latest firmware from www.support.dlink.com. If that does not resolve your problem please contact our technical support team so they can assist you. They can be reached by calling 1-877-453-5465. Thank you for choosing D-Link.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Small size
Very easy set-up
1G ports
Excellent 2.4 range (with a caveat - see other thoughts)
Reliability

Cons: Set-up screen kinda clunky
USB port is 2.0
Limited to 500G external storage
5.0 band range
Cost

Other Thoughts: Overall a decent router. No drops after 5 months of use.
There are a couple of things that justify docking an egg.
On my unit the signal seems very directional. I have it installed on one end of a 1500 sqft house and the 2.4 band is solid along the length to the opposite side. That's going thru 5 walls including the kitchen. How ever on the "perpendicular" direction, front to back, the range is only about 30 ft. Maybe the antennas are directional although the manual does not state this.
The range on the 5.0 band is extremely short. I can get maybe 20 ft tops. This going thru only one wall.
Finally I purchased this at one of the warehouse stores for a $55.00 promo price. At that price I'm satisfied.

Manufacturer Response:

We want to thank you for the feedback as we greatly appreciate the input and we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing connection issues with the product. Please keep in mind that building materials make a difference. A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on range.
Try to position the wireless router so that the signal passes through drywall or open doorways. Materials and objects such as glass, steel, metal, walls with insulation, water (fish tanks), mirrors, file cabinets, brick, and concrete will degrade your wireless signal. If you want to contact us for further troubleshooting please visit www.support.dlink.com or call 1-877-453-5465. We thank you for choosing D-Link.

4 out of 5 eggsThe little cylinder that could

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Feature rich and many options.

Love the dual band; i've got about 14 devices connected to this thing via either ethernet or wifi (2 smart tvs, x360, ps4, 2 phones, computer, laptop, vita, ipad, 2 satelite boxes, and some other gizmos) and i haven't experienced any bottlenecks.

QOS and Port Forwarding all work very well, and the qos is definitely letting me play games on my comp with minimal impact while other people are lolligaging on the network as well.

Coverage area seems to cover my house fairly well, on both stories. Only downside is the 5ghz wifi band-it loses some steam if more than two or three walls are in between the router and device.

There are definitely a lot of advanced features available that'll help serve peoples specific needs, but it's still shy of the wrtg options.

Cons: only reason i took an egg off, and it may be trivial, is that in order to access the options you have to log in and there seems to be an invisible timer that half the time kicks you back to the main screen even though you're active. Ticked me off a bit. other than that, i've been pleased with this router.

Other Thoughts: This was my first foray into DLink equipment. I've used a netgear router/modem combo for some years prior to this and the transition wasn't difficult. Definitely reccomend this product.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: fast
reliable
have not had any problems

Cons: only complaint is that this router does not have a bridge mode. rosewill makes much cheaper routers with bridge mode why can't a router this expensive have bridge mode?

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Does what it supposed to do. A definate boost from the previous router that I used before, which did not support N networking. Overall download speed and streaming improved a bit.

Cons: the range of wifi is mediocre. The shorter ranged 5ghz wifi is way shorter than expected. I have the router in the living room but the 5ghz signal dies out barely reaching in my room, which is less than 10 steps from the router.
On the other hand, the longer range 2.4ghz has a more decent range but somewhat inconsistent. I casually play games but have some spikes every now an then. Some portion might be associated with the ISP but this seem to happen more often after I switched routers.

Other Thoughts: For the price I have paid, I am somewhat satisfied but also unsatisfied is some categories. Also the interface of router config page has a learning curve. It took a while to get used to but overall it is easy to use with all the notes provided on the side.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid router

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: So far, I have had no problems with this router. It's ridiculously fast. Over 802.11AC I was able to pull down 62 Mbps from my HTC One in the next room. Very few instances of any slowdown (a big change from my previous Linksys) even with a PS4, desktop, several Macbooks, several phones, and 2 Chromecasts all connected and running at the same time.

Cons: Would have been nice to have a second USB input on the device to hook up a network drive in addition to our printer.

It's small, which overall isn't a real negative, but because of it's light weight and higher center of gravity, when I plug in LAN cables to the back, it tips the whole router over a bit.

Other Thoughts: Overall a great price for a small 802.11AC router. I would only recommend something "better" (ie more expensive) if this is being used for commercial or office use.

4 out of 5 eggsGood 5 GHz but shorter range than 2.4GHz

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: At 5GHz it has a stable super fast connection with the AC router.
Comes with extension cord so you can angle the adapter better. It seems to make a difference a bit.

Cons: 5 GHz radio does not go as far as 2.4 GHz radio...or at least through floors.

Other Thoughts: At long range, 2.4GHz is better so this would be a waste of money considering 5db 2.4 GHz adapters are much cheaper. This adapter is only good for short to medium range.

5 out of 5 eggsFast cheap reliable router

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Connects all the time, I don't have to reboot it all the time like my last 3 D-Link routers. No annoying bright lights either.

Cons: I have no complaints yet.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate After Heavy Use

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Gigabit Ethernet. Fast AC Wireless. Surprisingly reliable in a very demanding home environment. (see other thoughts)

Cons: Occasionally won't handshake properly with the modem after a reboot and you have to play around with it to get it to work. I can't seem to make wireless calls with my Galaxy s4 without the call dropping after a few seconds. This seems to be a firmware bug which hopefully DLink will address.

Other Thoughts: I have this thing running a very high demand home network. Two computers are using steam and YouTube all the time (teenagers). I also have numerous wireless devices; 3 laptops, 2 smartphones, 2 rokus, 2 ipods, and an iPad. I also have an HDHomerun prime that is streaming HD TV signal to two media center PCs (both are wired connections). These Media center PCs are going all the time, either with HD TV signal, or streaming from the Roku. The router has been up for several months without a single fault needing a router reboot. I think that pretty much speaks for itself in terms of reliability and throughput. After dealing with so many flakey routers from various manufacturers, I must say I am a bit surprised.

4 out of 5 eggsnot a bad router

This review is from: D-Link DIR-850L Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n

Pros: Bought this as my older Linksys was dropping signals. Good speeds when sharing over network and playing games. Works with my Western Digital 2tb external using usb. Media sharing is simple and easy my WDLiveTv quickly and easily identifies my external on this router on both Wi/Fi and Ethernet. 5Ghz band works very well as well as the 2.4Ghz. No dropped signals and very good range! Updated to new firmware as soon as I got it and very pleased with the simplicity and ease to update that.

Cons: Simply horrid and ugly looking router config page. Navigation for users who do not have much knowledge could be an issue. DLink has used this interface for a while now and its one of the worst ive seen... Time for a update!

Other Thoughts: I give it s 4/5 simply because of the router configuration page. This router performs well and never has had any issues. The router is small about the size of a 16 ounce can just a little wider. Lots of features such as shareport which works well in a home network setting. Users can easily access shared content without any issues.
