  • newegg Dual Actuator Technology The WD Caviar Black (2 TB and 1.5 TB models only) features a head positioning system with two actuators to improve positional accuracy over the data track(s). The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses a piezoelectric motor to fine tune the head positioning to a higher degree of accuracy.
  • newegg StableTrac The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (2 TB and 1.5 TB models only)
  • newegg NoTouch Ramp Load Technology The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media, as well as better drive protection in transit.
  • newegg High Performance Electronics Architecture The electronics architecture of WD Caviar Black employs dual processor - twice the processing power, and up to 64 MB colossal cache to maximize performance.
  • newegg IntelliSeek Technology WD’s IntelliSeek technology proactively calculates an optimum seek speed to eliminate hasty movement of the actuator, resulting in lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
  • newegg SATA 6 Gb/s Interface SATA 6 Gb/s (SATA Revision 3.0) provides twice the bus bandwidth of SATA 3Gb/s (SATA II) along with enhancements including a new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) and improved power management capabilities. SATA 6 Gb/s uses the same connector as SATA 3 Gb/s and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 and Mac OS X.

5 out of 5 eggsNoisy but it has lasted!

Pros: This may be a duplicate entry, but newegg requested it.

It's doing what it's doing - worked like a charm.

I bought two and so far, I'm pleased. Hope it lives longer than the Samsung Spinwrite that died just about a year to the day.

Just and update: 4 years later both of these drives continue to work without a hitch. Couldn't ask for more. The cons aren't enough to subtract and egg.

Cons: Noisy. So much so my wife asked me why it was clicking and she sits across the room. It was also expensive, but it's 64MB of cache and it is 2Tb.

Other Thoughts: Have lasted 4 years - can't complain. I have since moved to SSD for my daily work (that itself has been a challenge) but still use these drives for backups. I would purchase again without concern.

5 out of 5 eggsAn update to my review

Pros: Large capacity, at the time anyway. A hardy drive. Good speed.

Cons: They operate a little warm, but no real complaints about this drive.

Other Thoughts: I originally thought WD was not going to honor their warranty. I was pretty upset, because I have been a WD customer exclusively for the last 20+ years. I got directed to a RMA manager, and he did restore my faith in WD.
I am glad, because I would not own a Seagate, or other brands if they paid me. I have always had good service from their products, and have had way less failures than Seagate. I had to RMA a Seagate drive back when I used them. They were nice enough to send me a defective drive to replace the defective drive I sent them. That was it for them. I expect companies to have a high sense of pride when it comes to quality, and customer service. It has always been: Thank you Western Digital!!!

5 out of 5 eggsReliable non-Advanced Format drive

Pros: In certain cases or with certain cloning software versions, when cloning a non-Advanced Format HD for an older system, you may need the replacement HD to also be non-Advanced Format (i.e. physical sector size = 512 B/sector, not 1096 B/sector), even with SP1 Win7 which has been patched to recognize and work with WD Advanced Format drives. This 2.0TB Caviar Black is non-Advanced Format, is highly reliable, and it is good they are still available for this purpose.

Cons: OEM non-Advanced Format drives can be expensive.

1 out of 5 eggsBad QA... WD Digital is Coasting on Their Past Reputation

Pros: Their past reputation for Quality

Cons: Bought a bad one. Paid $11 to return it. They send anotherone with bad SMART status. Speedfan test says it is bad. Western Digital's own test utility gives it a passing test.... but their own read of the smart data says 3 of the measures are bad enough to return it under warranty.

I have always bought WD Black series to pay extra for quality. They are just not worth it any more.

This is my last WD drive.

Other Thoughts: You would think they would have at least one line of quality drives which they would test before shipping. They can charge a premium.... but now they charge a premium and deliver -------.

They have no decent SSD products. Seems like someone is just sucking cash out of the company and letter go to pot.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Mule for your SSD =)

Pros: Very good Performance/Capacity-to-Price ratio. Hasn't skipped a beat in my 2.5+ years of ownership with my demanding video editing workload of 100's of GB of raw video footage and heavy gaming usage (numerous 40-60GB games such as those in the Battlefield series, Titanfall, and MMORPG's).

That 64MB cache makes load times and transfers much smoother and consistent than other mechanical drives I've used.

Cons: Experiencing SSD's has ruined my tastes for speed, so if you're like me, you'll still want an SSD to helm your OS and a few flagship games. This drive will pick up the storage slack wonderfully though ("wonderfully" compared to lesser mechanical hard drives).

Other Thoughts: I'll likely be getting another drive in this series for additional storage because I've enjoyed it's reliability so much.

5 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital Black WD2002FAEX 2TB 7200 RPM

Pros: Pretty fast for a 7200 drive. Used as a multimedia drive (downloads, videos, music and photos).

Cons: Does slow down sometimes. Reads only 1.8TB.

Other Thoughts: Purchased in May 2011 and still going strong.

2 out of 5 eggsDied 2yrs 4mo

Pros: Was pretty quick when it worked.

Cons: Has always been really noisy.

Died just after 2 years. Had about 1100mb loaded on there from video, music, games, family photos etc. All gone. Got pretty noisy, then slow then dead all in one day. Tried to recover what I could. No luck. :(

Other Thoughts: I've always been pretty happy with WD but I have a Hitachi 1tb I bought for cheap 7 years ago in the same system and it works fine to this day. Been reading a lot how WD is slipping. Time to move on I guess. Sad.
