1 out of 5 eggsSamsung D3 4TB Ext. HDD - Update, Drives Failing!

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: - Low Price on Sale
- Large Capacity.

Cons: - 50% Failure Rate after 6 Months Use!!
- Drive Enclosures are not as Sturdy as Seagate Enclosures.
- Drive Read/Write Speed is Less than Equivalent Seagate Enclosures.
- No Heat Sink in HDD Enclosure.

Other Thoughts: These Samsung D3 External HDD Enclosures have Seagate 4TB HDD in them. I had previously written a review of these enclosures when I had them for less than a month in use. I purchased Eight of these 4TB drives because I thought they were a great deal at US$109/each. When I first purchased these drives, my testing indicated that they were slower than the equivalent Seagate Expansion HDD Enclosures and that the enclosures were less sturdy but I gave them 4 eggs.

I have encountered Two Major problems that make these Samsung D3 HDD's completely unacceptable for use.

First is that the drives drop connection to the server/client PC when I was attempting to back up drives to these external drives. I was never able to write more than about 100GB worth of data to the drive at any one time without the Samsung drive dropping out. I would have to unplug the drive and re-plug it in to have the drive recognized by the network. Using these Samsung D3 HDD Enclosures to back up storage drives was impossible for me.

At the 6 month mark, these drives have started to fail catastrophically. By that I mean that the drives will just stop and drop off the network and fail to be recognized, or anything else. All the data on the drive is lost. I took a drive that failed out of the enclosure and mounted it into a server bay to see if it was just the enclosure driver board. Nothing. The drives were dead. So far, I have had 50% failure of these Samsung D3 4TB HDD's.

Fortunately, I have backups (and backups of backups).

These are literally the first Seagate HDD's I have ever had fail. I have Seagate Enclosures purchased before and after these Samsung D3's. None of them have failed or give any indication of problems. I purchased these drives in 3 separate lots to minimize the chance of failure from one particular batch/run of HDD's. All of them seem to have the problems.

This is disconcerting, to say the least. I have only had problems with the Samsung D3 4TB Drives. I have a couple of the Samsung D3 3TB External Drives and those seem to be working fine. So Far.

In conclusion, The price of these Samsung D3 External 4TB HDD made them very attractive, especially if you are purchasing quite a few. The high failure rate and dropping out when transferring lots of data make them completely unacceptable as storage media.

Spend the extra US$20 and buy real Seagate HDD's and Enclosures or spend US$30-US$40 more and buy Hitachi or WD drives. It is definitely worth it to buy better drives if it saves you the hassle of having to fix a bunch of failing drives and worrying whether you have got everything backed up immediately on multiple drives.

I will not be buying Samsung HDD's again.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: It's hard to point to a pro with this drive. The design of the enclosure is pretty.

Cons: I received this drive as a Christmas gift and after reading the reviews decided to run the Samsung Drive Manager tools to checked the disk. Unfortunately it did not pass on 3 different computers and said to return the drive. I went through the RMA process with Newegg and as soon as I received the new drive went through the process again, and again it did not pass. I also tried some 3rd party surface scan utilities and it was a no-go. Now Newegg says it is past the return date, even though it took them over a week to get me a replacement. So now I am stuck with an external drive that I cannot trust to hold my data. I have been purchasing from Newegg since 2003 and only recently began having problems with them.

5 out of 5 eggsNice quiet external

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Nice form factor, quiet when running, speeds are solid.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this as a backup for my NAS enclosure. It's connected directly to the NAS and is fast for incremental bakups and has not 'lost connection'.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after a few months

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Worked well while it worked.

Cons: Failed. Unrecoverable.

Other Thoughts: Don't trust anything from Seagate, their quality control is terrible (I used to work for them, it is not a priority anymore). Samsung used to be good, but since Seagate bought it it can't be trusted either.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: this is my fifth perfect one. I use seagate disk manager , delete, then repartition into 4 partitions. transfer speeds consistent over 100mbs on 100gb transfers. i use ssd for OS so these are mainly data. i like them better than wd and seagate. less fall prone and nice led light clearly shows operation

Cons: none.

1 out of 5 eggsNever worked

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Looks nice, good sale price at 109.00 plus free shipping, good specs

Cons: Tried to so a system backup on the external hard drive. Never worked. Just gave me an I/O error. No customer support after normal business hours. Have a business with no backup right now as I wait to call support and get it fixed. VERY FRUSTRATING. NO PHONE NUMBER ON BOX OR MANUAL.

Other Thoughts: I hope it gets resolved. People don't have time to deal with faulty Samsung stuff that really isn't even Samsung.

3 out of 5 eggsSeagate in Metric bytes

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Works.. So far
Seagate HDD inside

Cons: Storage space is measured in the metric byte-type where everything is multiples of 1000 bytes, instead of the binary 1024 bytes that most of us have become accustomed to.
That said, Windows sees this drive as 3.63GB; 4,000,776,187,904 bytes, to be exact.

Other Thoughts: Besides shorting me almost 500MB, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there's a Seagate HDD inside the enclosure. I didn't read too many reviews prior to purchase as I didn't want to miss a sale, so that's nice plus.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE.

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: The case looked pretty. Seriously, that's about all it's got going for it.

Cons: I got in total 5 drives (4 purchased immediately through a NewEgg eB** Auction, 1 purchased some time after). All 5 drives are bad. ALL OF THEM. 3 were DOA and 2 were reported bad by Seagate's software. They were installed and that's as far as I got. I can't use them, nor can I return them due to a eB*y/Paypal/Seagate.

Utter garbage. I can't blame Samsung in this since they're Seagate hard drives. But DO NOT PURCHASE THESE. EVER. (I'd rate it a -5/5 if I could.)

Other Thoughts: I used to trust Seagate. I've used their hard drives for years with virtually no issues. This has completely shattered my trust with them. And their warranty page pretty much says "too bad, so sad". Completely awful. I don't think I will ever be able to purchase another Seagate drive again.
