The Synology DS412+ Four-Bay Diskless System is a high performance, cost-effective, network-attached storage solution specifically designed for small- and medium-sized businesses. A Dual Core processor, an abundant amount of memory, and two Gigabit LAN ports enable an ultra- smooth, lag-free response, while the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and eSATA connection allow instant, lightning-fast storage expansion. Running on the renowned operation system Synology DSM, and featuring an abundance of applications and features, this system provides an efficient way to centralize data backups, protect critical assets, and share files across different platforms. Complete with the high reliability and stability Synology is renowned for, you can rest assured that your business will be performing at top efficiency, with minimized issues and maximized up time.

  • newegg Experience High Performance Data Throughput With the Link Aggregation enabled, the Synology DS412+ delivers an average 182.66 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 5 configuration in a Windows environment, and 205.68 MB/sec reading1. Coming with USB 3.0 support – which offers transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbps, namely 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – the DS412+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power. The Synology DS412+ brings you the high performance that your data-intensive applications demand for a storage system.
  • newegg Dependable and Reliable Businesses need a strong foundation to face mission-critical tasks. The Synology DS412+ delivers high data availability to ensure access when it’s needed. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure. The CPU is the heart of any system, and the DS412+ incorporates a passive cooling structure to avoid the dependency of a dedicated processor cooling fan, and mitigate any critical point of failure. When the system detects fan fails, the built-in redundancy mechanism will spin up the functional fan to properly ventilate the system, and support continuous operations until the replacement fan arrives. Therefore, potential system damages are minimized and system availability is maximized.
  • newegg Flexible Storage Management The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) automatically builds an optimal RAID volume with data protection based on the hard drives installed, eliminating the need to have hard drives of identical size, while still offering a manual setup option for advanced users. Multiple Volumes on RAID allows you to create more than one volume on a RAID structure, providing a flexible and efficient way to manage your storage across all available hard drives. When the need arises to expand the volumes, simply allocate more storage space on the UI, and DSM does the rest for you without any service disruption.
  • newegg Rich Business Applications Synology DS412+ runs on the award-winning operating system Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which offers comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for office and business workgroups. Web Station with PHP/MySQL support allows a single Synology DS412+ to host up to 30 websites and numerous third-party web applications. The built-in mail server turns Synology DS412+ into a dedicated mail service provider. Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to manage IP cameras deployed in your office or home. Windows ADS integration allows the Synology DS412+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment, with no need to recreate users’ accounts on the Synology DS412+. Windows ACL support on the DS412+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on DS412+ through their familiar Windows user interface.
  • newegg iSCSI and Virtualization Ready With the iSCSI support in DiskStation Manager (DSM), the Synology DS412+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Citrix. It is the ideal alternative to SAN solution for businesses. Affordable and cost-effective, iSCSI allows SMB users to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays, while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks.
  • newegg Energy Efficient Design With 44 watts power consumption in operation, the Synology DS412+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provides two 92x92 mm fans and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, its noise-dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of Wake on LAN/WAN, multiple scheduled power on/off, and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation costs. All Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials. Synology acknowledges its responsibility as a global citizen to continually work to reduce the environmental impact of every product produced.

4 out of 5 eggsGREAT ADMIN INTERFACE ... BUT?

Pros: (1) An incredibly refined and efficient user interface (DSM).
(2) The fastest and most fully-featured NAS for the money.
(3) Proven stability, solid technology, and ease of use.
(4) Very simple degraded drive replacement.
(5) Extremely reliable.
(6) Link Aggregation and strong processing.
(7) Quiet (dual silent fans).

Cons: (1) The worst support you will ever attempt to obtain! They will not get back with you for days! Many report this experience.
(2) Poor cabinet design, including a non-recessed, very sensitive power button that will bring your company down if even slightly touched! We shutdown our unit twice by accident (or was it 3 times?). Its bright blue light beckons people to touch it. If you buy this unit, I recommend building up a protective barrier around this button using epoxy.
(3) It would be much better if the drive LEDs were above each drive instead of along the right in line with an indistinguishable main state indicator. This can create some confusion, and does not clearly communicate the status of the NAS.
(4) No Thunderbolt (would add popularity with Mac owners).

Other Thoughts: To be such a fine and relative expensive piece of high-performance equipment, it is impossible to comprehend the exceedingly poor cabinet design.

If it were not for the exceptional user Interface (DSM), this unit would rate only 3 stars !!!

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Synology Support

Pros: Concept and is nice and has worked fine until just March 2015. While it worked it was good and if Synology support did not act so stubborn in honoring their warranty (have not yet) I would give more than a two egg review

Cons: Synology Support. They don't honor their warranty after you spend a lot of money

Other Thoughts: Don't buy unless you don't care about support

5 out of 5 eggsVery flexible and solid performance

Pros: When I bought it was for photo storage from my photography business.
Since then I have used many other features including surveillance station for my home security camera system. Good motion detection algorithms and I love the timeline review feature

Cons: Early on I had it reboot itself a few times but the upgrade patches have fixed any problem I have had.

Wish I could determine how to make multiple volumes without loosing what I have. I am sure I can just haven't had tome to do it.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad

Pros: Easy to set up. Lots of options. Web interface.

Cons: Not real solid. The box is cheap plastic but it works. The applications are a nice touch but more detailed setup info would be helpful.

Other Thoughts: Cost me $1k for a (3) drive raid5 + 1 for backup. It's great for a small business file server with options to go cloud if needed.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Reliable, quiet, customizable with a user-friendly web interface. Works as advertised.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: The option to use a second unit as a backup is cool but not sure it's worth the cost of second + more drives. NAS in combination with cloud storage seems a better failsafe option in case of physical damage/theft.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Synology's bad customer support service

Pros: When the NAS unit works it's fantastic. That is unless you unplug it or it crashes on you forcing you to unplug or power cycle it. I'm really disappointed in Synology's support and the fact that I was sent a replacement that was bad after 3 weeks and now I"ll have to wait even longer.

Cons: Now I've had my DS412+ for little over a year and it's been great. That is until the unit experienced an issue 3 weeks ago that forced me to endure the entire weekend as Synology doesn't work on the weekend and then 3 more days of back and forth with them. They finally had me send the unit in for replacement even after I gave them provide of the issues via a video and my invoice (from Newegg), of course I had to pay. I finally got the new unit 2 days ago, so my entire environment was down until then... and guess what? The new unit doesn't freaking work! As soon as I installed the DSMupdate I've experiences issues with NFS disconnects, constant "configuration lost" issues and blinking blue lights that last for 10-20 stretches. Of course Synology hasn't gotten back to me yet and I don't expect them to either until at least Monday if I'm lucky.

And as I write this I was installing the DSM again and now it can't find the unit after a reboot. What the hell Synology!

Other Thoughts: I used to sing Synology praises but now I know better. As soon as they replace this unit, if they replace the unit, I am done with this company.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS!!!

Pros: Extremly reliable and easy to set up. Have owned and used it for 11 months now without any problems or issues. We also use the Surveillance Station which is a GREAT application, and very easy to set up as well. Currently we are using 2 - 4TB Seagate drives. Will expand with 2 more drives as needed. Synology also keeps up with their OS and Surveillance App with updates as needed which are as easy as pressing a button.

Cons: None so far...
