5 out of 5 eggsIt just works

Pros: it's fast
Many features.
You get 2 camera licenses vs 1 in the previous year Synology boxes.

Cons: pricy but you get constant updates (especially security updates) from Synology. So it's not really a <cons> . You get what you pay for :)

Other Thoughts: It just works as a backup sinology to another sinology box.
I installed it as RAID 1 and there are no problems

5 out of 5 eggsEasy initial setup, powerful features

Pros: Easy, tool-less setup is literally a snap. No SATA cables required. Hard drives literally snap into place in the carriers and then are inserted into the metal housing.

Easy to get working out of the box.

Lots and lots of advanced features.

Cons: Lots of advanced features. Setup of these advanced features isn't always so obvious for the non-power user.

Other Thoughts: Have barely begun to explore the advanced features.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The best NAS in the class, fast, huge apps selection, great user interface, easy configuration.

Cons: Unit is very quite, but if you insert two 7200 rpm enterprise drive, the cheaper metal case will vibrate terrible, I have to put extra weight on top when both disks spinning.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 1) Very straightforward set-up thanks to the drop-dead simple quick start in the packaging.
2) Quiet
3) Outstanding user interface in the web browser.
4) Great support - I have some other units from Synology and the firmware updates just keep coming.
5) Documented file system (ext4). If the hardware fails, there is documentation out there so that you can mount the disks and access the data. Coming from a Netgear unit that is failing, and based on SPARC, their custom filesystem is not accessible outside their hardware. This is worrying.
6) Separate power brick. If the power supply fails, it's easy to find a replacement rather than some built-in unit.

Cons: 1) Might be considered a little pricey, but that has to be considered in terms of "you get what you pay for". For storage, I would rather pay more and have the reliability and performance that brings.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great unit and great software to replace an Unraid server. With two Seagate 4GB NAS drive in Raid 1, power consumption is low at 10W with drive sleeping and 25W peak with both drive working. In shutdown mode (WOL ready), power consumption is about 1 W.
NAS will saturate the Gigabit Ethernet network in reading and writing file. I like the ability to schedule power ON and OFF schedule. Wake On LAN also work fine.

Cons: Negative is the price. I would like to see a S3 sleep mode. Shutdown mode work OK but a WOL take about 90 s. On my PC, WOL from S3 sleep take only 10-15 s.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic NAS!!!

Pros: Very quiet, very easy to use interface, and very very fast! Out of the box it was very simple to install, easy to plug in the drives, lockable front tray covers. Raid was automatically configured. Easy to setup users and their access. I love the interface, a 100 miles better than the Iomega/Lenovo i used before.

Cons: Just the price, compared with other units... but you do get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this with WD Red drives. Once again i love this unit!

5 out of 5 eggsJack of all trades NAS

Pros: Does waaaay more than just store files. It's got all sorts of apps aside from the usual storage systems (CIFS/SMB, NFS, FTP, iSCSI). You can install web servers, RADIUS, etc., etc. I purchased a DS1512+ a year or so ago to use for a small VM setup since the Synology boxes support iSCSI and NFS. Well, because it does so much else, I bought this two-drive unit so that I could dedicate the bigger NAS to the VMs and use the DS214+ to house my CIFS shares, backups, and shared music. I use the Slimserver devices (a.k.a. Logitech Squeezebox) throughout our house and the one of the apps that you can install is the Slimserver software. Very cool! One less thing for me to maintain. Check out all of the features:

Cons: It doesn't make me rich by mining Bitcoins?

Other Thoughts: I bought two WD RED 4TB drives so that will give me plenty of storage in a RAID1 config. So far I'm loving both of my Synology boxes. I had purchased some other NAS units awhile ago from other manufacturers and they just didn't have the performance, quality, and feature set that these babies have.
