This review is from: iStarUSA D-400-7P Black 1.2mm SECC Zinc-Coated Steel (Japan Made) (Main Chassis) 4U Rackmount Compact Stylish Chassis 7 External 5.25" Drive Bays
Pros: Price, Shipping Speed
Cons: Gaps around case cutout for the 5.25" bays, Not a lot of paperwork
Other Thoughts: The one problem with internet shopping is that you can't inspect the item for yourself. Can't look at quality or all of the little pro's and con's that will make or break the sale. However, despite all that I decided to go with this server case and I have to say I'm very happy with it. In terms of overall quality I would place this in the upper half of the mid range in quality. Its well built and sturdy, but you can tell that its not made like a Swiss watch like some of the $500+ cases. That being said, what really made me like this case was all of the little things that they don't tell you. For example, not only does it come with a lifetime supply of screws for those like me who loose them, but it also came with 4 additional black painted fan mount screws to replace the silver ones that will come with a second 80mm fan if you purchase one. On top of that they send you a second support bar, so if you have a vertical CPU cooler, the second support bar can be mounted in front of it in place of the original. Another aspect I really like are the air filters on the front doors are easily removed for cleaning. Also, I adore black interiors for cases and this case was a piece of cake to disassemble to paint black and then reassemble.
The only dislike/complaint I have for this case is that the cutouts behind the doors for the 5.25" bays are way too big. You can see around them and into the case. I'm still working on a way to seal it off.
Who would I recommend this case for:
After living with this case for a few weeks, working on it and customizing it, this case is really designed for a home server or small work server. It provides the user with a solid server case for an affordable price and some of the amenities of a server center. The interior is roomy and easy to work in, plenty of space to lay cables. All in all, great case.
I have a Zippy Emacs 460W redundant power supply and its a bit long for the case. It fits, but only because I have an empty hard drive rack on the 3 stack of 5.25" bays for the power cords to make the turn into the case. Also, I use a Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU cooler and it was just a little tall for the case. I took care of that though by grinding down the copper stubs on the top most air fin. Finally, if you are going to have one of those 4 in 3 hard drive racks, I'd recommend putting it in the 3 stack of 5.25" bays above the little bay. That case cage has a pad to reduce vibrations whereas the 4 stack does not.
