5 out of 5 eggsNot as bad as it is painted

Pros: Reasonable price, Looks OK and Vantec has very good support.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: When I first got this device it was driving me crazy connected to a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system on an Asus P6X58D Premium Motherboard. Kept constantly dropping out when transferring lots of data. Internet users kept blaming windows 7 but not so as it did the same thing using Acronis and not using windows at all. Finally found that it worked perfectly and still does more than a year later as long as it was plugged into the upper USB 3 port on the motherboard, it drops out if the lower port is used. I should add that all the firmware updates were done on the Vantec and all bios updates done on the Asus. At least Vantex communicated very well indeed and gave me lots of things to try. I cannot say the same for Asus who did not even reply to my various emails which I found very disappointing. I actually expected them to send me a replacement board when I explained the fault but not even a whisper from them. Hope this information helps some others with the problem.

2 out of 5 eggsVantec NST-D400S3

Pros: I am a professional photographer, and this was a good way to economically back up my image data.

Cons: The on/off switch died after using the device a total of thirty times.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be manufactured with sub-par components....

Manufacturer Response:

Hi,
We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We do provide a one year warranty from the date of purchase on your product, so feel free to get that exchanged for a brand new unit. Please contact support@vantecusa.com
Best Regards, Vantec

1 out of 5 eggsWorked for 17 months until failure

Pros: Nice idea in theory...

Cons: Generally unreliable likely due to cheap components, etc.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this almost a year and a half ago for the purpose of backing up my image files (I'm a professional photographer), and learned about the product from a fellow photographer at an Adobe Lightroom workflow seminar. The system worked great (after I figured out how to format the drives initially, etc.), then the on/off switch failed after 17 months of light usage. This is a bit disappointing, hence I'm now going to try another brand.

1 out of 5 eggsAAAARRGH!!

Pros: ....none

Cons: I bought the first one, it worked for one or two files then lost connection with the computer. This happened repeatedly. I contacted their customer service (with no response), looked for updates and patches, checked my USB 3.0 drivers and still no luck. Returned it to Newegg for a new one, same thing happened. I contacted Vantec customer service again, still they did not respond.

Other Thoughts: EVERY file that I though I tranfered was corrupt or just not there. All of my files are 4gb or bigger, so this may work on smaller transfers but not large ones. I am no newbie at this. I have been using USB 2.0 docks for my work and thought I would improve my speed by switching to USB 3.0. I ended up getting a SYBA dual bay esata dock and it works great at 70mbs!

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Please contact support@vantecusa.com so we can help resolve your issue.
Best Regards, Vantec

1 out of 5 eggsUseless

Pros: Nice in concept

Cons: Doesn't work when using more than 1 drive at a time, which kind of defeats the purpose of a dual drive dock. Always ends up dropping the connection when I actually start to access or write data.

Other Thoughts: Pretty much a complete waste of time and money. Even after the latest firmware update, it still does the same thing. Start accessing data, connection drops. Tried multiple cables, multiple computers, with Asmedia, NEC, and Renesis USB 3 controllers. Same result.

Manufacturer Response:

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. From reading what you've wrote and assuming you're using the dock properly, the device may be at fault. We do provide a one year warranty from the date of purchase on your product, so feel free to get that exchanged for a brand new unit. Please contact support@vantecusa.com for further assistance.
Best Regards, Vantec

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Faster than my Esata drive

Cons: Disconnects from system every now again.

Won't read two of my drives at the same time (same series, not same model).

Other Thoughts: I should have read reviews before picking this one up.

1 out of 5 eggsNice in theory, but doesn't work in USB 3.0

Pros: Nice looking - Uses only one USB 3.0 cable.

Cons: 1. Would not transfer at USB 3.0 speeds on my up-to-date Lenovo W510, even after installing the firmware update to the dock.

2. Firmware update was terrible to get installed on the dock under WIN7 Pro.

3.

Other Thoughts: White isn't a good color for a computer peripheral.

I am returning this item.

4 out of 5 eggsIt seems to be better with new cable.

Pros: It's been working much better with the new usb 3.0 cable vantec eventually sent me (probably 10 emails and after trying several things).

Faster than my esata dock.

Cons: It was intermittently disconnecting during large transfers (larger than 100 gb). Yes, it might be annoying to need a spare cable to test, but your alternative is rma for new unit or return with 10% loss and shipping expense.

Other Thoughts: It doesn't seem to be dropping as much when I transfer from an internal drive, in between two 1 tb drives within the dock, and from esata dock to this dock.

Vantec support was pretty good at responding quickly (less than a days wait) and some what useful as well since the cable seems to fix my issues.

I did the firmware update and definitely recommend it. I'm using Win7 ultimate x64 and this is an update to my previous review.

I would recommend it since it is about the price of what the thermaltake usb 3.0 dock, but this is dual bay so pretty useful if you have several drives you want to see as JBOD.

2 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: It comes with all the cables you'll need to hook it up. The thing is fast...when it works.

Cons: Very unreliable. It might show the hard drive connected but Windows thinks the drive is not formatted, or the drive never shows up at all. Works 1 out of 10 times.

3 out of 5 eggsFrequent drops

Pros: Good design
Pretty blue LED
Can hold up to 2 drives
USB 3.0 compatible

Cons: Had troubles with it at first. I use USB 3.0 and the dock continued to drop the drives during heavy data transfer.
Found out it is a bug with the USB 3.0 protocol and a firmware update should resolve the issue

Other Thoughts: Make sure you update the firmware first if you plan to use USB 3.0
If you plan to use USB 2.0 then a firmware update should not be necessary.
