5 out of 5 eggsThe Best External DVD Burner I have ever Owned! Very Sturdy and Reliable!

Pros: I stand by LG and Lite-On DVD drives! This particular LG Model Burner has been so good to me! I have had it for well over a year... I bought this unit USED on Craigslist.. and I have burned probably over 3-4,000 DVDs. (for personal collection). I need high volume drives like this! I don't care about the bulky size.. or it's lack of portability because I plug it in and I Leave it alone! I do not move this unit at all. I will be buying another one to have on hand Just in case!

Cons: None so far!

5 out of 5 eggsIts a HEAVY mother

Pros: Heavy Duty. sits sideways with heavy rubber strips going around 3 quarters of unit. No mishaps, very reliable. Eject button easy to get to, tray holds Discs very solid. Its got that 2 something (buffering memory) and u cant get one that high anymore except blu rays are 4. So thats a big PRO over other units even the more expensive ones.

Cons: Very Heavy and power unit is also, but that doesnt matter to me, its really a plus.

Other Thoughts: You dont see too many of these that perform lightscribe, I still have the blanks 4 that and its great 4 me, the blanks were a little expensive, but worth it to me. Ive made alot of copies, not 1 problem.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid drive

Pros: Feels substantial. works as expected.

Cons: May be large for laptop users but won't feel like it will fly off the table like a Superdrive does.

4 out of 5 eggsDOES NOT support Lightscribe

Pros: Reads and writes properly as a plug and play device on a Windows 8 computer.

Cons: Does not support Lightscribe. I was able to install part of the software that was on the CD that came with the drive onto a Windows 7 computer. It allowed me to configure the CD/DVD drive that was connected (the LG external drive being reviewed). It searched and indicated that no Lightscribe drive was found. I also have a much older (2007) version of the "same" drive. Some time ago, I used it as a Lightscribe drive. I tested it in the same way and the software immediately recognized it as a Lightscribe drive.

Other Thoughts: Some of the software that came with it is recognized by Windows 7 but apparently is not recognized by Windows 8. However, the specs. are proper in that they don't indicate that the drive is compatible with W8.

5 out of 5 eggsLG USB EXT. CD/DVD Burner

Pros: Simple direct setup power then USB. Has burned Linux iso'd for me no problem. A good alternative to "Slim-portable" USB drives, that many customers complain about build quality. One pays more and gets more. This drive is a real tray load like a built-in model. Power adapter makes it semi-portable. This can also be a con, see below. The drive feels solid with heft. I did not need a driver even when working on an old linux net-book (remember those?) from 2008. It just works. It does not have that "disposible" feel to it at all.

There is only one USB cable needed due to having its own 12V power adapter.

Cons: size: its not a true portable, and in fact is nearly the size of a netbook/chromebook. Limited-space users may call this a disadvantage when needing high-volume use in cramped desktop environs. For what it is, its expensive compared to an internal equivilent... but then one has to buy a case and 12V power adapter.

Other Thoughts: If you have a netbook, that generally don't include a CD/DVD burner consider this one as a long-term solution. Great for burning iso's, and OS backup. I'm using this on an ASUS Eee-900a with "clogged" SSD. ISO of linux installed on USB-Flash from burned image on CD made from an ASUS Eee 701. That pretty much sums up ability, as these early netbooks were rather notorius and brickable by the OS clogging up the SSD. With the proper use this burner is a good tool to keep older eqip. running with modern OS's.
