2 out of 5 eggsEnterprise class drive

Pros: - 15k RPM,
- external transfer 300GBps (in HP specs hopefully B=byte, not bit),
- hot swappable
- enterprise class SAS drive

Cons: - 3.5", not 2.5" size (data density less than current technology, slower performance, higher power consumption)
- "HP" = High-Priced? Cost per GB ($5/GB versus $0.73/GB for V*lociraptor 300GB SATA II versus $0.13/GB for Black C*viar 1TB SATA II) with performance unlikely to beat any of them
- 1 year warranty (for an enterprise class drive???), hopefully surviving that 1 year with greater reliability than mid- and higher-end consumer market drives with 5 year warranty. How can one have any confidence to store critical data on a drive that the manufacturer vouches for only 12 months? Wax tablets are cheaper and lasting longer.
- manufacturers specifications are so minimal, there is no info on drive cache, average throughput etc.
- overall disappointing lack of details, impossible to make an informed decision to buy this item based on any information on this site or even manufacturer's product site.

Other Thoughts: Look at the manufacturer product page and notice a much smaller number. If you really need this drive for your HP server, buying directly from the drive manufacturer's site saves you at least 15% compared to any other merchant. Besides any hard drive manufacturer trying to assure that their products with 1 year warranty satisfy customer demands for reliability implies the customer must have reliability demands significantly lower compared to industry average.
We use a lot of HP hardware (blades, storage) in our office and I consider them top quality, however if we are adding a new storage array in the future, we'd go for an array and drives from another company for much more bang for the buck and better performance and reliability, based on specs and reviews, not a marketing brochure promises.
Message to manufactuer: lower your own price to 20% and please get in touch with industry trends and economic reality to avoid losing your loyal customers.
