1 out of 5 eggspoor remote server

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Excellent storage capability.

Cons: Have not succeeded in getting remote web access to work. Reset button to recover server doesn't work. Poor directions in setup. Level 2 Tech support works hard at solving the issue but lengthy time-consuming process. Will need to return product.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully the return process/possible replacement goes much faster than the support who is trying to fix the problem. Been working on this for 21/2 weeks with no end in sight to the problems.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective new unit - replaced with a old defective unit.

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Nice unit if you get one that works. I bought 2 of them at that same time. One is running fine the other has been nothing but headaches from the day it came.

Cons: Got a unit with a failed drive out of the box and dealing with Western Digital has been nothing but totally frustrating. Been on hold for hours just to get a person to replace the junk they are sending. Unit had a failed drive out of the box. Tried WD's on-line RMA process and it said the drive was out of warranty (new drive). Finally after a week they got that fix and I got a replacement (wrong size). Then the unit crashed completely just before I got the replacement. After finally getting a support person on the phone they sent me and entirely new unit. Problem is the "new" unit was not new and has a problem right out of the box also. Went to register the replacement unit and it showed a new warranty date of only 4 months!! This unit was supposed to come with a 3 year warranty. Spending the afternoon on hold waiting to get the replacement replaced....

Other Thoughts: Nice unit if you happen to get one that works. If you don't be prepared for spending a lot of time getting WD to make it right. I have over 10 hours into dealing with the junk they sent - twice! Please note that the support people that I have finally gotten to have been very pleasant - but it seems the company behind them has a lot of issues to fix. Apologies only go so far.

Manufacturer Response:

2 out of 5 eggsFailed out of Box

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Small, runs Windows 2008-R2. Nice features.

Cons: Got 4TB unit 2 x 2TB drives. One drive failed before I even used it. And these are supposed to be Western Digital's Enterprise class drives. Pretty said start. At least I can boot & setup machine with one drive. Was supposed to have on-line this week.

Other Thoughts: Went to get failed drive RMA'd. Plugged in Ser# of drive and it said it was "Not in Warranty!! Brand new unit! Now have to go through the hassle of contacting support and all the added waste of time...(waiting for response). Very disappointing that they do not test before leaving factory.

2 out of 5 eggsA compromised device with an infuriating compatible drive policy

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Well, it works. Rebuilds RAID arrays quickly after a drive failure/replacement. Runs Windows, so can run Windows software on top of the device, which is kind of great (I am running Crashplan and specialized remote access software on mine).

Cons: There is one huge, fatal flaw in this product. It will only work with a very select set of specialty HDDs! You would think that a Western Digital NAS would work with Western Digital's NAS drives (RED line) at the very least. Unfortunately, no, you have to try to find these strange supported drives, which sell for more than 3x the price.

Stay away from this and all WD NAS products. I love my Synology (which doesn't complain about the drives I put in it), and would send anyone that way. This one was, unfortunately, a mistake.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsNice Unit with a Few Flaws

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Well built, great drives, love the display, dual NICs, dual PSUs, easy set up once you call tech support because the manual is incomplete and poorly written.

Cons: As said, the manual sucks. One little item they left out is that when you setup the unit, you MUST use Internet Explorer, because the setup routine uses ActiveX components. Well, I use Firefox and all I got was a 403-Access Prohibited error when I tried to start the setup routine. A call to tech support solved that problem, but don't you think this might be a good thing to put in the manual?

Another issue, mentioned by others, is that it is assumed you're using this unit for media. Well, I'm not and I don't need the media shares and I don't need to get scolded each time I log into the admin interface about the fact that they're not there.

Other Thoughts: One thing they don't mention is that you can use Remote Desktop Access to get to the server's desktop. If all you use is their admin interface, you can't install other software (like an FTP server). At it's core, this is a Windows Small Business Server 2008 without some of the features of the full-featured server product. I needed a FTP server on this unit, so I downloaded Filezilla, punched a port 21 hole in the firewall, and bada-bing, bada-boom, it's up and running. I plan to ignore the admin interface and just use Remote Desktop Access to manage the server.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a NAS

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Well Built (except for OS) Nice feature ie Dual PSU, NIC

Cons: Windows Storage Server. Does not function as a NAS. Must install connector SW.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the Sentinel 4 TB, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
The WD Sentinel can in fact be used as a NAS, as it is a network connected device, and allows for sharing via DLNA, CIFS, and for backups on multiple systems within your network.
The Sentinel is supported on Windows and Mac OSX. Note that the easy set up process allows you to integrate WD Sentinel into your home or office network. The administration Dashboard quickly guides you through the process, including adding users, setting up data access, creating shared folders and scheduling backups.

2 out of 5 eggsCool but has issues

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Adequate for a SOHO environment

Cons: Firstly, It cannot handle any load. With 2 gigs of ram, it barely runs its os, Windows Storage Server (basically 2008 R2 without certain roles available like AD controlling). At idle, it is using 72% of the physical memory and it has over 4 gigs of virtual memory on the array. Secondly, it is "incompatible" with any drives unless WD sanctions it. It will not accept any non-WD drives nor any WD drives that are not on the compatibility list. Lastly, WD's kits to replace or upgrade the Sentinel's drives are excessively expensive. For example, their "compatible drive" WDBBDN0030HNC is a 3TB disk that will set you back only a nice $349.99. Whereas a Seagate drive ST3000DM001 is only $149.99, less than half the price and would perform just fine in a RAID. I only picked this one because it did not have a bad review, but I am thinking about returning it.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Performs as advertised, very self maintained. It comes with top of the line hard drives.

Cons: This is not an issue for me but it does not offer the ability to change the raid type manually, the raid type is set by the number of hard drives and starts as raid 1 with two hard drives and then shifts to raid 5 with the addition of more hard drives. This is not horrible but an interesting note.

Other Thoughts: No Android app to access the NAS. =\

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 4TB (2x2TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0040KBK-NESN

Pros: Small, low power consumption, easy setup. 2TB RAID 1 is enough space for most small biz. Dashboard is simple to use and comes with decent online help.

Cons: Not a huge deal but: Won't work with WD Green drive, I haven't tested a RE WD drive yet, but the documentation lists only 2 compatable drives that you can increase storage with. Both of which I have not found on newegg.

Not even sure if it would allow just a single drive installed without making it part of the RAID array, but I haven't done much reading yet.

Other Thoughts: Overall happy with this, bought it for myself as a test run for a client install and am very pleased with how it is working.
