Samsung 32-Inch 970 Series UHD Professional Monitor U32D970Q
Ultra High Definition Resolution

This UHD (3840x2160) resolution monitor outputs four times as many pixels as standard Full HD (1920x1080) for enhanced clarity and sharpness.

16-Bit Look-Up Table

A 16-bit look-up table (LUT) renders smoother tonal transition, showing distinct color changes especially in shadow palettes. Combined with its color calibration modes — including industry standard sRGB, Adobe RGB, and nine others — the U32D970Q's LUT is essential for those who require high-fidelity color reproduction.

40 Percent More Area

The U32D970Q's 32-inch screen is 40 percent larger than a 27-inch screen. With a more expansive viewing area, you can work on larger images without having to resize them, or keep more applications and browser windows in view at once.

Tilt, Swivel, and Pivot

A specially engineered hinge offers a 20-degree tilt and lets you swivel between landscape and portrait viewing positions. The height-adjustable stand and the VESA wall mount deliver further flexibility.

External Device Connectivity

This unit has four USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI 4.1 port, one Dual-Link DVI for transporting uncompressed digital video files, two DisplayPorts, and a 3.5mm audio output for headphones.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Great UHD picture
Quality manufacturing
Nice stand

Cons: cost

Other Thoughts: I purchased one last August and a second in January. A bit pricy, but if it lasts it will be well worth it for the large format UHD.

1 out of 5 eggsI'm shaking my head on this one

Pros: This is a top of the line monitor. It has great color and the contrast/resolution is excellent. It's great for video content creation and editing

Cons: Failed after 3 weeks out of the box. I've asked for a replacement but if that subsequently can't be used for more than a few weeks I'll get something else.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredibly color accurate monitor

Pros: This is by far the most beautiful monitor I've ever laid my eyes on, period. Let me back that up with some relevant info. My order of priorities for this monitor were #1 photo editor, #2 video editor, #3 gaming. Sometimes this is a difficult mix to achieve. Most quick response-time gaming monitors don't have the range of colors, nor the viewing angle necessary for critical photo editing. I had a very expensive Lacie IPS monitor many years ago, then a Samsung 24" IPS about 8 yrs ago, now this monitor. This blows them all away. If you're not familiar with why people editing photos prefer IPS technology, it's for 2 reasons. TN technology can't display your eyes' full range of colors. IPS gets extremely close. The other reason is "viewing angle." This is a terrible term. Photo editors aren't interested in editing their photos from an extreme angle, so what do we care about viewing angle? The term should be, "color accuracy over viewing angle." Look at a photo on any cheap flatscreen monitor then move your head up and down and left and right. The color hue, saturation, contrast, and brightness all change from different angles. This is totally unacceptable for any kind of consistency.

I'll only touch briefly on gaming since I don't do that much. The few games I play looked amazing on this monitor. I see no ghosting whatsoever and I can't notice any response time problems at all.

I haven't done many reviews because mostly enough other people step up to the plate. I felt I had to review this because of all the unbelievable reviews below. What the heck are you people talking about?

One tip to all (plus the reviewer below). This is new technology and requires a DP (display port) cord and of course supporting hardware to be able to display full 4K at 60 Hz. Maybe I'm behind the times, but I wasn't aware of this when I bought the monitor. I first hooked it up with a DVI cord which I thought was today's monitor cord "standard." Well I can tell you I was extremely disappointed with the results. I saw basically what the reviewer below saw. Small details and fine text looked like you were looking at text through a magnifying glass on an old CRT monitor where you could see bands of R, G, and B. I too tried to fix it in Windows ClearType, but was never happy with the results. Then I realized they shipped this crazy looking cord with the monitor and you were actually supposed to use it! It immediately fixed all my problems. Display now operated at 4K 60 Hz. All fine details were absolutely sharp as a tack. Fine white text was pure white with no color fringing. Another reason I think the reviewer below was messed up was because he contradicts himself on the number of DisplayPorts. On the top of the review it says dual. On the bottom he says there is only one. For the record, there are 2.

Matte screen: I have a dark wall behind me, so reflections never really affect me. Looking "through" the matte screen is a joy (non

Cons: It wasn't free

Other Thoughts: One thing I suggest you keep in mind for a monitor of this resolution is the size and scale of everything. I've seen reviews on the net saying how they set Windows to 125% or 150% size and they just love it. My question to that is, why did you buy a 4K monitor then? When you set Windows to 125% or 150%, it scales everything. This means text, graphics, everything that's on your Windows desktop (that supports that Windows scaling) This means your resolution is actually lower because you're not using each pixel. Of course if you only bought it to use 4K when gaming (likely in full-screen mode), then at least you're using it properly for something. My previous monitor was HD at 24" That means to get everything the same size, a 4K monitor would have to be 48". 4K is twice the size (but 4x the resolution because it's 2x times 2x). 48" wasn't practical for me, so I just had to be OK with moving the monitor closer to get the same apparent size as my old monitor.

Make sure your graphics card supports 4K *AND* 60 Hz *AND* this particular monitor. I suspect some of the other negative comments below could also be related to this.

Every day that I turn on this monitor, my desktop background shows my family on the beach in Hawaii and I am just in awe of how subtle and accurate the beautiful blue-green hues of the water and the fine detail of the reddish-black-brown lava rocks are to look at. Stunning!

3 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor, but...

Pros: Colors are wonderfully accurate. Pleasant modern design. Dual display ports. 4x (2x 2.0, 2x 3.0) high powered usb ports. HDMI compatibility with audio out.

One particular feature can be extremely useful for professionals that need to be able to foresee what their users will see on their displays or other media, particularly useful for web designers, is the ability to juxtapose their own color scheme on one half of the monitor and have another scheme on the other half. For example, Adobe sRGB on the left side and Adobe RGB on the right.

The monitor comes prebuilt with several calibrated color modes such as sRGB, Adobe RGB, SMPTE-C, BT.709, EBU, DCI, DICOM, and room for 4 custom calibration for your own purposes.

The monitors are also individually pre-calibrated for you to be ready out of the box.

Cons: This big one that I couldn't live with was the unpleasant surprise that this monitor is natively designed as BGR, meaning that the subpixels, per pixel, are ordered in Blue Green Red instead of the traditional Red Green Blue or RGB.

For images videos and games, this doesn't really matter. However, for the operating system's and ultimately all other software's UI, this is a problem.

This web page does a straightforward job of explaining what this means:
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/subpixel.php

Basically, text is not displayed correctly because the operating system and its subsequent software is trying to anti-alias its text through an expected RGB display. With a BGR display, the information is pushed through to the incorrect subpixels since the subpixels are effectively reversed from the traditional design. It's like looking at a page in a book through a thick piece of glass and which causes eye fatigue. Most text is so small in 4K to begin with, the chromatic aberration effect only exacerbates the strain.

There are a few things you can do to correct this issue. Some methods fix some of the problems while other methods are too inconvenient to employ.

ClearType is Window's answer to fix this issue by allowing you to choose a series of samples of text that look best to you catering to your monitor's design and orientation. This can be found in the control panel. However, this method only accounts for Window's own software while other programs, such as Google Chrome or Photoshop, are not corrected.

The best solution is to use Windows ClearType Tuner:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/tune.aspx

This will force all software to be displayed into the BGR scheme. However, while this seems like the be-all end-all, the caveat here is that if you are using multiple monitors like I do, and one of them is RGB based, that monitor will then display as incorrectly as the BGR display did. The tuner does not account for multiple displays.

The only way to get the best of both worlds is to use brute force and hang one of the monitors upside down by hanging it on a wall mount for example and then using software to flip the image. Ta-da, RGB.

Unluckily, in my case, my 2nd monitor is a ROG SWIFT that I can't hang and flip in my set up, plus it doesn't have any other port other than the one display port which prevents me from hooking up a gaming or other system which I WOULD TO THE SAMSUNG BUT THEN I HAVE TO HANG THAT UPSIDE DOWN AND THEN I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO FLIP THE IMAGE IF I WANTED TO USE SMTOHING ELSE TOHER THAN WINDOWS!!!!!!11!!1!

(sorry)

Overall kinda frustrating. I hope this helps you if you decide to or already have this monitor.

FYI, the Dell 32" IPS is also BGR based while the Asus PQ321Q, customer support claims (after 30 minutes of trying to figure it out) that their monitor is actually RGB based.

I think I'll go with that.

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd one and ended up returning the other. However, I did buy both of them as open box items. The first was defective as it began heavily displaying artifacts then subsequently shutting down until it wouldn't start up again. The second monitor I purchased from Newegg and it came with a scratched screen.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: I build 3D Models of utility poles. I sat in front of this display every day for a month. The coating is thick but it cleans well and doesnt smudge, prevents glare. The colors are great as far as i can tell, best backlighting i have owned. In my O-Calc software the resolution is great, it sped me up a vast amount.
Not as bad for games as i thought it was going to be.

Cons: When web browsing, Firefox will not show things well in 4k, lots of errors, you have to use internet explorer to browse, and watch 4k videos. I bought this display, and had to wait over the weekend for it to ship, then 3 days shipping, So i only had it for a few days past the return policy, I sat down this morning and theres a big grey bar across the screen, horizontally. This is hooked up to a $10,000 workstation. tried every display port output on the machine. every input on the display, multiple cables, hdmi, everything. still a large permanate bar on the screen. I tried to call samsung they had me on hold for an hour. Gave up, i thought hey, i spend a fortune on newegg maybe they wont care ive had it for like 35 days. nope, told me to call samsung and gave me the same number ive been calling. Finally got a hold of someone, took them 20 mins to figure out what monitor i was talking about. then, eventually, they sent me a shipment label, now i have to send it for "service" in New Jersey. I dont know, maybe it will be ok, but i imagine it being beat up and covered in fingerprints when it gets back...$1700 for a "flagship professional product" and now i have missed a day of work over this and im going to have to suffer, trying to do my best work at 1080p for who knows how long. Asus would have sent me a new one and free shipping for the old one.

Other Thoughts: This display was part of a very safe workstation with Furman power regulation and still some how failed with what i consider poor support afterwards.

5 out of 5 eggsBest monitor I've ever had

Pros: Image quality, size, weight

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Not sure what other reviewers complain about. I've had this on my desk for 1 month and every time I look at it I am amazed. I used to have 30' Samsung (great) a few years ago and 30' NEC PA302W (even better) more recently, but this thing is in a whole other class. My NEC weighed a ton and was quite bulky and difficult to maneuver. The 4K Samsung is thin, light and easy to turn by comparison. The image quality is way better than I hoped after reading some of the negative reviews. Photos and 4K videos truly come to life on this screen - it's as close to live as I have ever seen. I am not sure about color accuracy and don't really care - I never play with calibration, limiting myself only to brightness and contrast adjustment for ergonomic reasons. The present calibration modes on this panel are more than adequate for me. I found the stock calibration to be too bright for my environment and decided to go with sRGB mode. I haven't missed my color-accurate NEC for a second. I run this on Titan X through a single Display Port cable at 60 Hz 4K with no problems whatsoever and enjoy all the usual activities, including gaming. I haven't compared this to any other 4K panels of this size and don't feel the need to. I would have easily paid 2 or 3 times the current price of this monitor to have on my desk - it's that great !

2 out of 5 eggsRegrettable Purchase

Pros: Image quality

Cons: Product quality, support

Other Thoughts: I purchased two monitors a little over a month ago: One for myself and one for my wife.

Unfortunately, from upon receiving them, my wife's monitor has a high pitched whining noise that lasts for about ten minutes while the monitor warms up from being asleep. It is almost unbearably loud and we have been unable to resolve it. Having paid $1200 for a premium monitor, this was pretty disappointing and so we attempted to get a replacement for the defective unit.

Newegg does not swap defective units, instead needing to pay for return shipping and then purchase a new one, so we contacted Samsung to deal directly with their manufacturer support. The response received was that they do not have a program to replace defective units and that I should try unplugging and replugging in the monitor to see if that fixed the high pitched whine. (Which it doesn't, by the way.) So now we have a new monitor that is incredibly loud and no swap scenario available to us.

Overall, disappointing experience with what should be a premium monitor and the missing support makes me regret the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor

Pros: worked perfectly out of the box; nary a dead pixel; resolution is tremendous and solid colors. a great replacement to my old 301t that finally died this year. running at windows 125% and text is super crisp. read some other reviews that it was flimsy, and this is not my sense at all. nice small frame and a solid weight on the base.

Cons: no issues at all.

4 out of 5 eggsClear Choice for Photographic & Video Editing

Pros: Arrived on time and in good shape. Attached it and another monitor to an Ergotron LX dual side-by-side arm. Needed quite a bit of extra tension, but it turned out really sweet. Connected it via the provided DP cable and is running at 3840 x 2160 60 Hz. Needed to install drivers provided on CD. Windows 7 then just picked it up and ran with it without a hitch. The construction on this monitor is just as good at the Dell 27" UltraSharp it is replacing. No idea why the other reviewers considered it poorly built. Colors are amazing. Have not yet calibrated it, but the software that it ships with supposedly provides some level of calibration. I am skeptical of auto calibration, but it looks amazing right out of the box. No dead pixels as far as the eye can see. No lines, no burn through . . . none of the hype that some folks seem to be selling relative to this new generation of monitors. I am running this via a GeForce GTX 760 with 16 GB RAM and it is as smooth as a mother's love (at least my mamma's love). Goes in and out of Windows sleep mode smoothly. I did tons of research, and for my money, this is the best mid-range 4K monitor in the 30-32" range. Samsung's version of an IP panel appears to me to be amazing.

Cons: Would not pay a full $2,099.99 but $1,499.99 seems reasonable. I would give it 5 eggs but the adjustment buttons are a bit small and not that easy to maneuver. But frankly who cares? How often do you really adjust your monitor? Once a month when I recalibrate - that's it!

Other Thoughts: If you have the money, I would recommend this monitor at $1,499.99. My primary objective is photographic and video editing. I want really fine resolution and color quality, and this monitor clearly delivers on that. I do not do any gaming so that is not my interest. High resolution video and Blu Rays are just as clear and sharp as one could imagination.

2 out of 5 eggsSamsung U32D970Q

Pros: Good resolution 4K
Wide angle
High price

Cons: I recently bought samsung U32D970Q. The problem which i am facing is as follows. I connected my CPU which is having NVIDIA NVS 510 card with 4 MINI DP to the SAMSUNG U32D970Q. That this particular monitor comes with 2DP, 1HDMI & 1DVI. I used Mini DP to HDMI & Mini DP to DVI adaptors to connect with all inputs of monitor. Its perfectly working and the resolution is very good when i am using it horizontally. But when i am tilting the monitor vertically, all the resolutions were getting disturbed. The two DP connected displays are showing same resolution even after tilting vertically but the remaining 2 displays that were connected through DVI & HDMI are getting disturbed and their resolution is changing to 1080 and visibility is pathetic. The image is getting stretched to borders and script is becoming difficult to read. I looked after all settings but i did not find a solution. My query to you is, how i could get the best resolution even vertically? My usage is always vertical display.

Other Thoughts: I feel that samsung could have equipped with 4DP instead of HDMI & DVI.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung U32D970Q Display.

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing some display issues in Portrait Mode.

Your issue seems to be due to the mini DP to HDMI and the mini DP to DVI adapters not being able to support enough pixel clock frequency to drive your images properly.

Your display issues appear to arise when four (4) inputs are simultaneously used in Picture-in-Picture (PIP) Mode in Portrait Mode. PIP images in Portrait Mode are composed of four (4) 960 x 2160 images. The mini DP to HDMI and the mini DP to DVI adapters do not support enough pixel clock frequency to drive 960 x 2160 resolution. Instead, the input images via these adapters have 1920 x 1080 resolution, which cause downscaling of the horizontal resolution (1920 --> 960) and upscaling of the vertical resolution (1080 --> 2160) of the original image. Consequently, the letters look distorted and are difficult to read.
