5 out of 5 eggs2.5 years since I bought it and no issues besides space.

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: Rock solid drive. I replaced my old OS drive with this and it sped up my launch times exponentially. It's fast and has lots of options for prioritizing speed or longevity. even in longevity mode, it's still leaps and bounds faster than my standard drive was.

Cons: Space. Mostly due to Steam not allowing me to choose where my save files are stored.

Other Thoughts: Definitely would buy again. I'll probably look for a 500GB next time I replace my drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for a Boot Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: - Fast

- Nice Colour

Other Thoughts: I've used this as my boot drive and for a few random programs for over 2 years, I'm constantly reinstalling Windows and deleting/writing onto this drive and it's still going strong without a single issue.

5 out of 5 eggsNice SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: Cheap, good price per GB.

Cons: Only 120GB

Other Thoughts: Been running Ubuntu fine now for 2.5 years in my laptop. I was hesitant to go with a brand other than Intel but this one has been great so far.

5 out of 5 eggsStrong, Fast, Excellent Drive 2+ Years and no hiccups!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: Owned and still running this drive for 2+ years with absolutely no hiccups or problems. Been my boot drive as well as holding some fairly hefty games (i.e. Garry's Mod and XCOM).

Initial setup was a breeze along with configuration. Hoping to get another 2+ years out of this fantastic SSD.

Cons: Little awkward setting up firmware updates for the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: I have had this SSD for quite some time now, and have formatted several times to re-install the OS, or for other reasons... This SSD has out-performed my expectations. Great choice.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Transfer rate is still pretty good in comparison to some of the newer SSD's.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: The SSD gives very impressive bench marks. I purchased two of these to use a primary HD for OS installation. I had one in an intel build and an AMD build. After sometime (3-6) , they both started not responding. I was told by a friend, who recommended them, that there is a software to install to fix this problem. You will have to wipe your OS in the process as well.

Cons: Who wants to buy an SSD and later has to update the software because the manufacturers software was junk?

Other Thoughts: Both are being used as paper weights for now. I went with Adata SSD sx900 series and have had no issues with it. I purchased these before taking the time to learn about SSDs. Now I know that they are all hype and lacking in long term performance.

3 out of 5 eggsFatal Flaw?

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7TD120BW

Pros: Works very fast. I originally picked this up in 2013 for $90 on Newegg. My Windows 7 boot would complete in less than 20 seconds including startup tasks. The speed that I got during that time probably accounts for most of my score.

Cons: Windows gradually slowed down. Figured I had too many programs, startup items, background programs or possibly a virus. None of the above. It degraded to the point where it took many minutes to boot. Then eventually not at all. It was ridiculously frustrating. My problems were compounded by a Seagate that was/is nearly on the verge of completely bricking. Thankfully I have a trusty 5+year old SATA 2 WD 640GB HDD to do its job, but as expected it's not very fast.

Other Thoughts: After I bought a new SSD (PNY 240GB CS1100, a decent drive), I installed new OS on it (Win 8.1 instead of 7 this time). I only had programs on the Seagate so after multiple attempts I manually reformatted it through cmd. It was 98% fragmented and resisted defrag and other tools. After the reformat went through I put less than 5GB of files/programs on it and it was already 41% fragmented.

While this certainly didn't help my issues I had unplugged and isolated the Samsung to test it out.

After affirming the Samsung 840 degraded, I then reformatted it because as I noted the drive was useless as a boot drive. I have reformatted it to a small program drive and it has worked wonderfully so far. I have put a bunch of programs on it and everything works perfectly. In my opinion, this aligns with the idea of the read degradation on the Samsung 840s. Samsung claims it doesn't affect the regular 840s, just the EVO, but that's what happened to mine.
