5 out of 5 eggsMSI GE60 Apache

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Backlit keyboard. 1080p screen. Sound

Cons: Heat

Other Thoughts: This laptop is awesome. The keyboard is awesome. The back lights add to it but over all it feels solid. The video card is what is expected. I can play most games on high. The screen is vibrant and is super clear. The sound from the speakers are loud and work perfectly. There is minor bloatware but easily fixed. The quality of of the laptop is next to none. It is a very solid laptop. I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone! I know a lot of people might be tempted to choose a Lenovo/Sager laptop(though I have personally never used either) I believe that this laptop will not only compete, but also beat those brands. I moved from a desktop to a laptop for portability and I am perfectly happy with this laptop. This laptop has all of the specs from a to date desktop. The video card may not be the strongest but it runs all games with ease.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdating from my previous review

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I wanted to update a new review from my previous review on this laptop after using it for a few weeks now. It definitely deserves more credit than the below reviews have given it.

I've been playing World of Warcraft, Diablo 3 and the Wildstar beta with no issues at all. The games run smooth at the higher settings and look fantastic on the 1080p screen.

The first thing I noticed with WoW is that when sliding the preset quality to Ultra which maxed everything including AA, AF and shadows that it still obtained a nice 50-60fps in most outdoor areas. This had bogged my previous laptop down causing me to have to lower settings to medium/high.

I also really like the design and feel of this laptop.

The steelseries keyboard is also a perk with custom lighting and feels great to type on.

Cons: The touchpad for the cursor is known to not be all that great on these although I use an external mouse 90% of the time so it's no issue to me.

I haven't been able to determine if this is an issue yet but the heat does get a little warm. I've been running Real Temp and have noticed temps up to 90-92c max on the CPU and around 88-90c max on the GPU while gaming for hours at a time. This is with me using a cooling pad and the turbo boost fan button. The only fan exhaust is on the left side of the laptop rather than the rear.

Other Thoughts: After previously owning an Aliewnare m14x r2 and debating on the Alienware 14, I had came across this laptop and jumped right on board with it for the below reasons after comparing it with the Alienware 14:

Gorgeous 15.6" 1080p screen (Alienwares 14" models strain my eyes a little and I didn't want their heavy 17" model)

The latest Nvidia GTX 860m 2gb card has been excellent for me so far and is much stronger than the GT 765m card in the Alienware 14

The i7 processor is the 4700HQ opposed to the 4700MQ in the Alienware 14

Hard drive is also noticeably better as the MSI has the 1tb 7200rpm hdd compared to the slower 500gb 5200rpm hdd in the Alienware 14 unless you upgrade it for additional cost.

The RAM is the same 8gb 1600mhz except that the MSI comes with a single 8gb stick with an open slot that you can add another stick later to upgrade if needed and the Alieware 14 comes with 2x4gb sticks filling both slots.

One last thing I'll point out is that the MSI has a 2 year warranty while the Alienware 14 only has a 1 year unless you pay additional of course.

Total cost on the Alienware 14 with the upgraded gt 765m was going to cost me over $1500 after taxes. The MSI won me over hands down with the $1249 price tag and having the overall beefier hardware.

I'm not trying to make this all about making the Alienware 14 look bad because it is really a well designed beautiful laptop and may have better cooling than the MSI although I'm only trying to compare the tech spec differences of what you get with your money.

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Good graphic, light weight for 15.6"

Cons: to me is a little overheated , but i can get over with.
mic is not working on skype, maybe is windows 8.1's problem, i got headset with mic so is not big deal.

Other Thoughts: wish they dont use windows 8.1, i like windows 7 better.

4 out of 5 eggsGood PC Overall

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: Really good specifications for the price and size.
Notebook is very lightweight for its size and the AC adapter is also not heavy so it is viable for portability unlike heavier notebooks.
I upgraded the ram to dual channel when I received it for the higher memory bandwidth and I have found no issues so far.

Cons: Trackpad is probably not the best I have used but this was stated before and I was aware of the flaw.
Would have been nice for it to come with 2x4GB of ram for dual channel instead of 1x8GB single channel.
Lots of bloatware. Did a clean install of Windows and reinstalled most software.

Other Thoughts: Overall good experience. Fully aware of flaws before purchase.
-1 Egg because I had to buy ram to make it dual channel.

Pros: None

Cons: I recently purchased this Laptop while I was deployed and was reading review the other day about the product. I saw that some people were stating that the computer was coming with 8GB of RAM compared to the 12GB that was on the website when I purchased it. I checked mine and sure enough it had 8GB of RAM I contacted Newegg to get the issue resolved and they refuse to fix the problem. They are asking for proof that the website stated 12GB of RAM. My suggestion is that Newegg owns that they messed up the posting and fix the customers computers that purchased the computer during the time it stated 12GB. If they refuse to fix this problem I will be returning this product and re purchase from a company that sends a product that they post.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsMSI GE60 Apache Pro-003

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: I received the laptop this morning while at work so I haven't had a change to fully test it out but I will update this review again over the weekend. I read the review below me and had to throw my experience in also which is very similar as mine also only came with 8GB ram instead of the 12GB as advertised.. I immediately contacted customer support via web chat and awhile they offered to have it RMA'd back to them to make it right, I opted out since I just received this and do not want to worry with shipping back so they credited my payment method $20. I'm sure they could have done better than this or at least shipped me the 4GB stick so I can put it in myself which is what I asked for but the rep wouldn't do it... I compared prices to the matching 4GB stick for this laptop and it runs around $80 so a $20 isn't justifying. I will contact customer support again after this to see if they can make this right.

With that aside, I love the laptop so far from what I've been able to see. It's light weight and sturdy feeling. The hinges on the lid feel well built. The Steel Series keyboard is excellent and having the buttons for the fan/light control is nice.

I can't wait to see how well it performs on some games. I will update this review after I can test them and after chatting with customer support again to bump the eggs from 3 to 5 if all goes well.

Cons: Does NOT come with 12gb of ram, only 8gb!

3 out of 5 eggsFirst Impressions

This review is from: MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003 Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 15.6" Windows 8.1 64-Bit

Pros: This is a 5* laptop that has some problems that can potentially be resolved (see cons).

The display is sharp. Though text is noticably blurry at small font sizes.

The hardware specs are hard to beat. I was in the market for something I can play on and a laptop. My options were a do-it all laptop or a desktop+ a cheap laptop. This offers specs similar to a $600 desktop and is much nicer than a $600 laptop would be. +1 Egg

I will update this section after I get to test the computer using MATLAB and some games.

Cons: Came with 8GB of RAM as opposed to 12GB as described. Sticker on the computer says it's 8GB, so I believe Newegg is at fault. I will contact Newegg about this. -1 Egg if not resolved.

Bloatware. MSI, Norton, and Intel pop ups are just distracting. Mouse spontaneously turns into a "wait" cursor as I'm typing this review and have no other applications open.

Windows 8. For instance you have to be online and create a microsoft account in order to log in and first use your PC.

Trackpad. Keeps bringing up the start menu while I'm typing. When I mistakenly type a key it takes me to the start screen. Other than that tracking is reasonable, and it has two-finger scroll.

Keyboard. Occasionally misses key presses. This is especially bad with the space bar. Right shift is small, as a result when I use it I press the UP arrow instead.

Keyboard and trackpad are irrelevant when used with external accessories, but this is a laptop so it should have usable navigation itself.

Other Thoughts: 3* for now. I will update depending on how Newegg handles the RAM situation. I will also attempt to find good settings for the trackpad/bloatware/windows 8 situation. If everything is resolved I will change the review back to the 5* that this laptop deserves.
