5 out of 5 eggsEnterprise Drive

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have many of these and get decent IOPS out of these.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Good enterprise drive with good read and writes. If you need a drive to work 24x7 on your server without breaking the bank, then this is the drive for you

4 out of 5 eggsA LongHaul Drive

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This is an enterprise grade drive it has the technology for the job. It is quiet and has minimal vibration When I first turned it on Iwas wondering if it was working, because I couldn't hear it or feel any vibration when touching it. It showed up on my monitor, so I knew it was working. The head moves to the outside when not running, eleminating the possibility of damage to the head. It has vibration softing technology and other goodies that should help it to be relaible for a long time.
It has a 5 yr warranty.
Performance is good. Testing with a few different utilities averaged in the 150 MB/s reads and 130 MB/s write range. This should put it a little above the performance average of comparable drives. This is a high quality drive and solid performer.

Cons: The price is a little high, but you generally get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I first tested the drive with the WD Data Lifegaurd Diagnostics. No problems . I ran the endurance tests available with AnvilBenchmark for a few days. A retest with WD Data Lifegaurd showed no problems. I like this drive. Obviously, since this drive was designed for a server or NAS It's meant to be used around the clock. Testing for a couple of weeks can only show so much. I'm interested to see how it does for the long haul. This is the Mack Truck or Freightliner of the Hard drive world. It can handle a huge load of data and deliver it pretty fast and reliably .
There is much more information on the WD Re webpage that is worth the read.

5 out of 5 eggsWD RE 3T Is No Joke! Surprised!!

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: *Fast & Consistent Data Transfer Rates over USB or Sata
*Excellent Responsiveness
*Great Warranty
*Very Good network transfer - file server / shared drive

Cons: *Price! Not for your average consumer.
*High Power Consumption
*Higher than average operating temperature

Other Thoughts: Very Impressed with this drives performance both
as a stand alone internal ( in my workstation @
work as shared drive ), & external (tested in home
file server) duties. If performance is your primary
determining factor I'd give this drive a stong look.

Interface Transfer Speeds: 12.3GB of Mixed Files

Vantec USB 2.0 / Sata Adapter

ATTO = 164.4 Read / 150.2 Write
CrystalDiskMark = 189.9 Read /152.6

Power Usage: via Kill-O-Watt P3 Meter

Peak Power - 12.5w
Power On - 19.8w

Temperatures -

Avg. Temp 35C to 42C
Max Temp = 46C (Highest Temp Seen on work loads)

So there you have it. Power & Temps are high but it is a high performance ready to get to work no non-sense type of drive. Handled the work flow on my workstation with ease and I'm seriously considering purchasing one to replace the 1TB Blue I currently employ.

This is truly a great drive for your enterprise / workstation / server needs. Impressed.

3 out of 5 eggsAverage Drive

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: This drive functions well, and dropped right into windows 8 without installing any special drivers. I had the correct drivers already installed for my SATA controller (intel based) and it supported hot-swap perfectly.

Cons: Performance appears to be the biggest con for this drive depending upon how you look at it. It had extremely high burst rates but quite slow sustained throughput. Depending upon the use this might be an asset.

Other Thoughts: I do my testing doing windows copies and take the numbers directly from the copy prompt.

I think that is the best indicator of ‘real-world’ performance. My computer is an Intel i7 with 16GB memory and Plextor SSD drive.

Copying from SSD to this drive I received bursts over 300 megabytes per second lasting a second or two, then sustained transfers of 50 megabytes a second give or take for about 10 seconds, then another burst, repeating through the transfer.

This is a very slow sustained speed for those whom are moving around large amounts of data (IE movies, photographs, backups, etc).

It may prove helpful for lightly servers in small offices whom are transferring small documents repeatedly. Given that this is an enterprise drive, I imagine that was Western Digital’s goal.

That being said I’ve tested their main competitor’s enterprise drives and have seen marginally less burst speed, but a better overall throughput which I think is more beneficial for average drive use.

I’m a Western Digital fanboy, but cannot recommend this drive. That might just be why they’ve been discontinued.

FYI: Drives this big need to be formatted as a GPT partition. Not a big deal in windows 7+ or linux, but possibly problematic for old windows 2003 servers unless you want two partitions.

5 out of 5 eggsWestern Digital RE Enterprise HDD

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Hard drive install was fine, Windows 7 installed all necessary drivers. After a quick reboot I was in the Windows Disk Management creating a partition.

I used the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools to scan the entire drive, this took slightly over 6 hours to complete. No errors at all!

5 Year Warranty
The Western Digital RE Enterprise drives are meant for heavy workloads that require durability associated with such use. It's reassuring that this company backs it up with a beefy warranty, and for this price point I wouldn't accept any less.

Cons: The only con I would consider would possibly be the price. You could buy two Western Digital Blacks for the same price as a single Western Digital RE Enterprise drive. However it really does comes down to how you plan to use these hard drives. If you are running a cloud service or doing something that moves a lot of data around, then you are likely better served with the Western Digital RE Enterprise drive.

If you want to stick a few hard drives together for a local NAS, you might end up with more bang for your buck with the Western Digital Black line of hard drives.

Other Thoughts: Performance was impressive on this hard drive.

Sequential Read : 135.773 MB/s
Sequential Write : 79.287 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 34.738 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 83.106 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.590 MB/s [144.1 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 1.341 MB/s [327.5 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.590 MB/s [144.0 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.241 MB/s [302.9 IOPS]

Compared to a Western Digital Black I have installed:

Sequential Read : 100.265 MB/s
Sequential Write : 91.691 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 33.738 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 45.432 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 0.417 MB/s [101.9 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.821 MB/s [200.5 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.606 MB/s [147.9 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.841 MB/s [205.4 IOPS]

Running these drives in a RAID setting would be quite amazing. Even a single drive gives a nice performance boost over my aging Western Digital Black drive.

Overall I thought this drive was impressive and very speedy. You are certainly getting a premium product when you purchase this.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: They seem well constructed and are quiet. I have had no problems initializing them or building an array with them. We purchased 12 of these for a RAID 5 array on one of our low-level database backup SANs and haven't had an issue with any of the 12 thus far. Contrary to the other reviewers, packaging was fine...it may be because we ordered 12 instead of 1 or 2. It actually looked like it was drop-shipped or something because they came double-boxed in custom (non-newegg) box with all 12 in a special styrofoam mold that fit perfectly within the innermost box.

Cons: The other reviews of reliability concern me especially because these are for an enterprise SAN and we got the RE4 series for that reason. So far so good though.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Packaging

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: You don't deserve a pro for this horrible packaging.

Cons: Horrible, terrible packaging. I realize that I'm ordering a bare OEM drive. But that doesn't mean that Newegg should put in in a box with a piece of bubble wrap. Not wrapped in bubble wrap. Not immibolized in the box by bubble wrap. Loose in the box to bang around unprotected on all sides except the one that the bubble wrap is on. What is their shipping department thinking?!? This is an expensive, precision piece of equipment.

The way my drives arrived, there were two drives in their own individual boxes in one larger Newegg box. The two smaller boxes are the ones described above. To make matters worse, the smaller boxes were shoved up against the side of the bigger box with NO PACKAGING. So it was essentially a hard drive with two thin layers of cardboard protecting it.

Other Thoughts: I just ordered three 3TB WD Red drives. One good, two DOA. Packaged similarly to the 3TB drives above.

I will never buy hard drives from Newegg ever again.

1 out of 5 eggs1st DOA second slow and noisy

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Not much at this point. Regret the purchase.

Cons: 1st Drive was drumming its heads from the moment I powered it up... Newegg quickly replaced it for me... or as quick as return ship and wait gets...
Second drive runs but makes more noise than it should and is noticeably slower in performance that it should be.

Other Thoughts: All in all, this is why the HD manufactures are doomed. They are all putting out trash products with high DOA and in-life failure rates. My firm uses SSDs for anything under 250GB now and as soon as the 500's get down to the $250 range, will make that move as well. Give it another year or two and the HD manufactures might as well bag it and sell all of their interests to China... they have nobody to blame but themselves for the crash in quality over the last couple of years.

Manufacturer Response:

We appreciate your feedback and apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with the WD RE, as this is not the typical experience with the product.
Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses, and for this reason it is unfortunate that you have received a dead on arrival (DOA) drive. We do stand behind our warranty and replacement policy, and would appreciate the opportunity to replace your drive for you directly, if necessary.
As a troubleshooting step, we recommend running either our WINDLG diagnostics software or Macs built-in Disk Utility to check your drives health.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Limited Warranty

This review is from: Western Digital RE WD3000FYYZ 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: When it worked it got very good performance.
171 mb/s.

Was well packed by newegg because I bought so many of them they kept them in the original packaging that WD sent to them.

Cons: One of the five drives purchased was defective 40 days after purchase and they absolutely refuse to stand by their warranty.

I called Western Digital and they claim that these drives are not covered under warranty as they are considered OEM drives.

I was adamant about the 5 year warranty and they requested a copy of my Newegg receipt.

I sent them the receipt, waited 5 days, and they still deny the warranty.

Other Thoughts: <-- Verified Owner

Legal action will be consulted with our lawyers.
I wonder how many other people they do this to.
