MASTER THE ART OF WAR TO BECOME THE UNDISPUTED RULER OF MEDIEVAL JAPAN! In 2000, the Creative Assembly re-invented the strategy genre with Shogun: Total War, an unprecedented blend of 3D real-time battles and turn-based management game and the first offering in the multi-award winning series. With over 7 million units sold and universal acclaim from the press and community, Total War has consistently been at the cutting edge of the genre and is today one of the most successful PC franchises of all time.

In 2011, the makers of Rome and Empire: Total War will release the sequel to the game that started it all. Shogun 2: Total War will take long-time veterans and newcomers alike to the next level of strategy gaming on PC. Based on 10 years of experience in making Total War, Shogun 2 is the perfection of the series with a new Artificial Intelligence (AI), revolutionary multiplayer modes, brand new campaign map options and epic 3D real-time battles.

It is the middle of the 16th century in Medieval Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. The player takes on the role of one Daimyo – the clan leader – and will use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal: re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun – the undisputed ruler of Japan. Set during the golden age of Samurai warfare, Shogun 2 brings to life the most turbulent period of Japanese history.

  • newegg Total War redefined Shogun 2 is the ultimate refinement of the original formula with a new, cutting-edge AI, more polish and online functionality than ever before. The result is the perfect mix of real-time and turn-based strategy gaming that invites both veterans of Total War and new players to experience the enjoyment and depth of the series.
  • newegg New character progression Choose from 9 different clans and compete on and offline for the undisputed supremacy of Medieval Japan. Gain experience to level up your own character-warlord as well as your generals and agents.
  • newegg A complete single and multiplayer offering Play through the Main Campaign in single player or invite a friend online to play competitively or cooperatively in Campaign Multiplayer mode. Join 8-player multiplayer battles with your own upgradable avatar and climb the online Leaderboard to show the world who reigns supreme. Also including exciting new modes of team play for clans, a first in the Total War series.
  • newegg New Generation AI system Developed according to Sun Tzu’s principles in the Art of War, the Artificial Intelligence constantly analyses its situation and reacts to your every move with greater precision and variety.
  • newegg Improved land and naval battle gameplay Land battles never felt so realistic with new multi-staged castle sieges and terrain features changing according to the weather and time of the day - turning each engagement into a tactical challenge. Set buildings on fire to force garrisoned troops out and use your units’ special abilities to turn the tide of the battle. Naval combat also offers more variety with the addition of coastal battles. Islands can work as effective cover for your ships, while sand bars and reefs can be used as traps against an enemy fleet.
  • newegg Accessible and in-depth empire-building gameplay A streamlined User Interface makes management of your kingdom much easier. Build and govern cities, recruit and train troops, conduct diplomacy and manage your agents – each feature is now introduced with comprehensive tutorials, gradually revealing the depth of the Shogun 2 campaign map – the heart and soul of the Total War experience.

1 out of 5 eggsInstallation nearly impossible

Pros: I have no idea

Cons: I can't figure out how to install it! I could have hacked/pirated it 10 times over in the time it's taking me to install it from discs I purchased. Even though I have the two discs I still apparently am supposed to download something for 17 hours!

Other Thoughts: What the heck is Steam? I stick in a total war disc, I get out Steam???? I don't remember buying Steam. Software Co.'s are eediots (apparently newegg wont let me say what they really are). They don't want us stealing their stuff and yet they make it impossible to use when I buy it legally!

2 out of 5 eggsCan't Give it Away

Pros: Can't beat a free game, right?

Cons: I have no interest in this game

Other Thoughts: I find it funny that there are so many hardware products that come with this game for free. I mean, come on, it's supposed to be a class A game, right? But they're giving it away in droves? Weird.

I've played demos to the Total War games before, but I just couldn't get into that kind of gameplay. Too slow or something.

1 out of 5 eggsGlitch-Ridden Mess!

Pros: Decent game design. If it were ever to become free of glitches it could be a great game, but considering empire STILL hasn't been fully fixed . . .

Cons: This was the Total War that was supposed to focus on multi-player, yet multi-player in unplayably glitch ridden. The first patch only half solved the problems it was supposed to, and didn't even attempt to tackle the massive multiplayer-campaign issues. The community is already dying.

None of the promised features work reliably (battle stats, avatars, skills) and the game gives EVERYONE "dishonorable coward" because it doesn't count your finished games properly.

Even the old features like campaign multi-player have the same game ending de-syncs and crashes as in EMPIRE. How do they keep charging for things that don't work?!?!?

Other Thoughts: Last Total War I'll ever buy. This game was so disapointing and unable to quench my Total war thirst I fired up my old copy of Rome and even had more fun! Yes, I've played to death, but at least they finished it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood game overall

Pros: Not my style of game, but it was free as a promotion. Highly recommended for strategic gamers!

Cons: Basically no players online. Very hard to get into a lobby.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Game

Pros: Good Graphic, Good Music and Sound (although you may get bored if you play for a long period of time). Responsive control and a lot of nice improvments over previous version.

Cons: Takes time to learn and takes a lot of time to learn accomplish almost anyting, the second misson takes more than 10 turns already...It is not a game for a casual gamer

Other Thoughts: You do not see anything happen in provinces that do not border your territory. That should be the case but that's no big deal.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent game

Pros: Fixes many of the mechanics I hated the most in previous Total War games.

Much more manageable map size. If you loved nothing more than to manage unreasonably large empires, you may want to go back to MTW2

Cons: Often had issues with selecting the wrong units. Also, when you click on a message about units or constructions, it just takes you to the location but does not select it.

Other Thoughts: I've been waiting for this game for nearly a decade.

2 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Looks like they put a lot of work into the game. Voice acting seemed pretty good on the video cut scenes.

Cons: Not my cup of tea. Went through the tutorials. A few graphical glitches here and there. Locked up on my first time exiting the game (had to end-task on it) Not a good sign. If you're a strategy fan you might like it.

Other Thoughts: 16GB download from Steam, took all weekend on my slow internet connection

5 out of 5 eggs10 Years in the making (and still working on it!)

Pros: *As always in Total War: Strategic Map, turn-based strategic play, with battles determined on tactical maps in highly detailed real time, _visceral_ Samurai style! (Good heavens.... Have you lost your head?? :) )

*Astounding 3d environments and effects

*Amazing individual animation for thousands and even tens of thousands of troops on the battlefield at a time

*Great soundtrack and effects

*Will support DX11 and latest hardware/software advances

*Has significant improvements in multicore and hyperthreading support for Intel CPUs

*Immersive play, humor, and historical and cultural information to make a fascinating pass-time become epic

*New Multiplayer modes including Clan wars, and true cooperative play including dual command of armies in real time battle.

*True and detailed control over personal "avatar" (your personal general player icon) both in appearance and skill advancement.

*Veteran and Hero units offer the same appearance and skills controls

Cons: *DX11, AA NOT included with release, patch expected in April. Currently runs as DX9.

*Requires modern and upper tier hardware to run to its full potential

*Many optimizations still not included at release and await patches to be issued

*The standard version does not include an extra playable Clan, special armor, extra points for avatar advancement, and additional historical battle included in the Limited Edition

*Map is limited to Japan- So far!

*No Benchmark. Release bugs aside, this is a very technically advanced and complex title, and even top tier machines will finally meet their match if they have monitors equal to their video muscle - Unfortunately this game STILL has no benchmark included, despite the fact it clearly can outclass the demands of any current FPS title.

Other Thoughts: Since the beginning of the series ten years ago, there has been a large, extensive community that both mods and helps advance technical ideas and solutions. You can look on the Total War dot com boards for help, hints, suggestions and support as well as a number of fan-based groups' sites with a wealth of information

As a parent to other parents:
This title is fun. It includes history, culture and other things like battle and strategy, assassination and skulduggery -but it has NO blood and NO gore. The camera either tastefully turns away (in cutscenes) or disdains to show battle-related gore. Beyond its friendly helpers and addictive playstyle, it offers information and education wrapped in slick, eye-melting candy. Its safe, informative, amusing at times, and just fun!

Should you stumble onto a rain-slick, lightning-lashed battlefield where the ground fog rolls back to reveal an enemy army, lanterns bobbing and sputtering in the blowing rain... Good LUCK!
