4 out of 5 eggsWorks good with my DAW

Pros: Does what it's supposed to.

Cons: Somewhat expensive. Don't use the install cd as others have mentioned. Download the latest from their website.

Other Thoughts: This card has the Texas Instruments chipset that is required for most firewire audio recording hardware. I'm using this with the M-Audio Profire 2626 with no issues. I had to use the Unibrain controller software for this card to switch it to windows drivers.

5 out of 5 eggsOK so

Pros: Unit it self yes it works and is good well the one I have is good.......

Cons: The problem is not the Unit its the other manufactures that will say that it works on 800 and it would if the software they made could read their own unit that is being used at the time. And I'm saying being used in ever possible way you can think of.....OK so this unit is good and the unit I use it with is a GIMO....means junk....

Other Thoughts: Non not a GIMO

3 out of 5 eggsDriver issues

Pros: Easy installation. Lots of FW800 ports!

Cons: Fishy drivers. So far doesn't work with efi-x.

Other Thoughts: My siig worked right out of the box, but I decided to download the UniBrain drivers, as other reviewers had recommended. The unibrain driver prevented my card from working, so I used 'update driver' to get the Microsoft driver, which works. Haven't done any speed tests, however.

I'm using XPsp3. I also have EFI-X OSX installed on this machine, and I have yet to get the siig to work in OSX.

3 out of 5 eggsBuyer beware

Pros: Card appears well made, has a good combination of features...just wish it worked in my system

Cons: This card will not work with the Lexar FireWire 800 Compact Flash card reader I bought. Siig support suggested new drivers from their website (did not fix it) and then drivers from the Unibrain website that were not on the Siig site. It made the reader recognizable until I tried to actually read data from it. The end result: Siig said to return it to my place of purchase. Tried to RMA it to newegg.com and they pointed out it cannot be returned. Now I am stuck with a card that doesn't work.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Goodness on Vista x64

Pros: Fast and cheap. Doubled the file transfer performance over USB 2.0 with an external 1 Terabyte drive. Works flawlessly on Vista x64.

Cons: Driver installation includes something called "Unibrain 1394 driver swich utility" which I don't quite understand why I need.

4 out of 5 eggsAudio Engineers pay attention

Pros: Firewire 800 and 400 on one card. Has the Texas Instruments chipset that is needed to work with Firewire Audio interfaces.

Cons: Wish someone would come up with a quality made Firewire 800/400 and Esata card. Seriously, look through the site and tell me just how many good 800/400 cards alone there are. Not many.

Other Thoughts: Necessary evil for those of us building systems for Audio production. ** Newegg ... I love you to death and am very loyal to you guys. Please give us a better selection of these cards. Thank you. **

5 out of 5 eggsEnclosed CD Information

Pros: Cards are working very well. Getting over 150 mbps transfer speeds on old laptops (with docking stations).

Cons: Really none - see note below

Other Thoughts: The CD that SIIG ships with these cards are missing the network drivers. Therefore it is not possible to load all of the required drivers for XP (I assume also Vista) with just the CD.

The better way to do this is to go to the UniBrain web site and download the latest driver set. This installs the latest drivers which include the network drivers. The important thing is that after the install and reboot, you'll be asked for a location of the network drivers. It is under Program Files and UniBrain.

It took a little bit to figure this out, so hopefully this will keep soemone from having to work this out themselves.

4 out of 5 eggsworks well, fussy drivers

Pros: Fast transfer rate with my Sandisk FireWire 800 Compact Flash reader! I hope to use it with video capture in the future.

Cons: Unibrain drivers that come on the CD with the adapter don't load...the loader locks up and so do any drivers on the Unibrain website (this is with a Q6600 and Vista Home Premium). However, the drivers for the version 2 card (what newegg shipped me) on the Siig website load fine and work like a champ. Note that currently the drivers for the version 2 card aren't signed and don't say they'll work with Vista (32 bit), but they do.

Other Thoughts: Save yourself some grief and shred the CD that comes with the product and just note which version card you get and download the proper driver from the Siig website.

3 out of 5 eggs1394b Driver Compatibility Issues

Pros: I purchased the SIIG card a few days ago on Newegg. The card installs well and the 1394b driver is easily downloaded from the SIIG website to replace the 1394a driver that install automatically in XP. Installation of the driver was no problem (take note whether you have a v2 or v1 card before you close your case).

Cons: My intended use of the card was to connect an external LaCie d2 Quadra drive. Using the downloaded 1394b v2 driver the disk would connect but could not be formatted. I easily connected the drive to an older 1394a card I had on the system and was able to format with no problem. When I switched back to the SIIG card, the drive loaded (device manager) but was not accessable and my system became unstable. I removed the downloaded 1394b driver and reverted to the 1394a drivers that XP installs. The drive now connects and operates fine on the SIIG card but, per SIIG documentation, at the reduced FireWire 400 speeds.

Other Thoughts: There may be a conflict between the SIIG card and the legacy FireWire 400 card on my system. I've logged the problem with SIIG Tech Support on 3/19/08 and await a response. I will post an update if they resolve the problem.
