When it comes to gaming chassis modification and upgrade, expandability is something that end-users look for when searching for the most capable of systems. The world of computer components changes at a constant pace and expandability becomes important when it comes to acquiring new technologies and multiple components. The design and development team at In Win constantly base their ideas off of what end-users require during their gaming experience and the Maelstrom is no exception.

The IN WIN Maelstrom is fully draped in a dark metallic black with luxurious interior and exterior coating to provide superior protection from humidity, oxidation, extending the lifespan of the chassis. Inside the case, you'll have all the room you need to build your dream system, with tray supporting four CPU M/B (from Micro-ATX to Extended-ATX) and bays for 5x 5.25”& 6x 3.5" drives. It also offers superior acoustic and vibration-free performance via acoustic absorbers laid inside the chassis. A shock-free railing system is provided to offer ease of maintenance and installation.

The Maelstrom is anything but discreet. Aside from the nine 12cm fans, the Maelstrom includes retaining holes at the rear for water cooling, providing an even more advanced cooling solution for your system. The PSU is designed to mount at the bottom of the chassis and retains an independent ventilation hole, providing excellent cooling and prolonging the components’ lifespan.

  • newegg Exquisite and Durable Paint Job The IN WIN Maelstrom is fitted with a coat of dark metallic paint that not only works to show the Maelstrom’s intimidating character, but also protects against humidity and oxidation. This will help expand the lifespan of the chassis.
  • newegg Revolutionary High-Efficiency Thermal Solution A whopping total of nine 12cm fans blanket the interior of the Maelstrom, providing an unparalleled thermal solution. Mesh vents on the front, top, and side panel offer superior ventilation and trap dust and other objects that could clog your system.
  • newegg Excellent Acoustic and Vibration Solutions Carefully laid inside the chassis are several acoustic absorbers that help to efficiently reduce noise and shocks that are a result of your interior components.
  • newegg User-Friendly Mechanical Design The shock-free railing system makes upgrading a breeze. The rails are lined with rubber that absorb shocks and extend the life of your drives.
  • newegg Superb Expandability The Maelstrom is a king in the expansion arena. Able to support a total of four CPU M/B ranging from Micro-ATX to Extended-ATX, as well as 11 5.25” Drives, the Maelstrom over-accommodates for the most stringent of users.
  • newegg Convenient Front I/O Panel The IN WIN Maelstrom features a convenient front I/O panel for easy access to four USB 2.0 ports, two audio ports, two e-SATA connectors and one IEEE 1394 port.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent case

Pros: Durable, looks, expandable, functional

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Love this case. I do digital art and photography, and I have my system set up for heavy graphics, and this case works great. No heat issues, excellent cooling, well designed.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT case!

Pros: Superb air flow, roomy & sturdy.

Cons: As mentioned in many other reviews, the front "handles" are not meant to be used as handles at all. They are for looks only.

Other Thoughts: I've owned my case for over 3 years and it has been a solid performer for me. It is extremely easy to work in the case and it cools very well. I am surprised to see it is not offered for sale anymore.

4 out of 5 eggs2 years later: Great Case

Pros: COOLS VERY WELL. I bought one extra led fan to go with this thing and I didn't even need to do that. I couldn't possibly see reason for this thing not to cool the most heat intensive systems. If one huge side fan isn't big enough for you, you can buy 6 120mm size fans for it instead. You can fit 10 120mm fans in here if you wanted! Not to mention its water cooled ready.

ROOMY. As with most full size cases, you have plenty of room for expansion. I've upgraded my graphics card from a gtx 560 ti to a larger radeon hd 7950 and it still fits with crazy amount of room to spare.

GOOD LOOKING CASE. My favorite part of this case is the upholstery at the bottom, definitely a stand out. Plus the black interior is sure to get some eyes. The secondary green theme can be hard to work with sometimes, but it looks really nice overall. I'm sure this thing would look amazing with a nice UV theme going on inside. As for me I have a super bright white led fan at the front and blue cathode tubes lighting up the interior along with the blue led side fan that comes with.

Cons: I've owned this case for two years and the first things to go were the feet. I needed the feet because my psu needs clearance for exhaust at the bottom. Currently using mover's sliders. This isn't too bad of a con though, I moved this case around quiet a bit. I'd say if you don't plan on moving this thing around you will be fine in that light. 2 years of bringing this thing places and sliding it under desks (heavy) has taken its toll.

Now the biggest con would be the lack of cable hiding systems. I managed to hide very few wires by way of back of case, and hiding them behind the motherboard is basically impossible because the motherboard is so close to the case. My guess is because they wanted to avoid big heat sinks hitting the fan. You really need to be creative. Like I said you can hide few cables behind the case there are holes at the 5.25 bays that take you back there. I went through there and out the seam where the upholstery meets the mobo. I also tucked all my unused psu cables under my hdd's. All said in done, it didn't look like a rat's nest and I was happy.

Also. The post speaker was doa after a year. Can't complain it was never really that loud anyways.

Other Thoughts: I wrote a review back in 2011, and gave this a 5/5. The only reason why I knocked off an egg is because of cable management and the feet going.

Also, it would be really cool if the green "fake handles" could really be used as handles and made of metal or something. If I could lift this thing by those I would buy this thing again for my next build.

5 out of 5 eggsNot for cats

Pros: After using this case for a year I can say that it's durable, easy to get into and out of, and inserting drives is great, but you have to pop the front off, it's not clear to do that at first.

Cons: The power button is just the size and in just the right place that my cat hits it when jumping on the tower. It happens at least twice a day, I'm thinking of engineering some sort of cover.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

Pros: Very roomy, plenty of fans. The bracket system to easily install and remove HDD's and Disk Drives works better than i could have imagined.

Cons: None for me

Other Thoughts: It is very large and weighs a ton. So keep that in mind.

5 out of 5 eggsGood case

Pros: Big case, lots of room
well built

Cons: difficult to transport
handle on front is decoration only
only has one fan on top

Other Thoughts: i definitely thought that the big case was a pro, fitting everything in was very easy, especially coming from a really small case.

5 out of 5 eggsCould not be happier!

Pros: - Huge
- Excellent airflow
- Terribly easy access to all your rig's internals
- Comes with all the accessories you could need
- "Hidden drawer" with a great selection of matching, toolless, shock-absorbing drive rails. Couldn't imagine ever running out, there are plenty each of various sizes.
- Great price
- Quality materials

Cons: - Cable management is minimal
- Probably going to require a fair amount of effort to keep dust-free

Other Thoughts: I could not be happier with a case than I am with this beast, especially in the $100-200 bracket. It's well built and allows me to access my internals with minimal effort. When removing the side panel, the wire for the fan requires the slightest bit of attention since it tethers the panel to the case until you disconnect it. This is hardly even a valid gripe since as far as I know that's a pretty standard solution (the only alternative I've seen being a "wireless" solution whereby two metal plates merely touch when the side is on, but this too has it's own issues I think).

All in all, if you like the look of this case, you will not be disappointed. Its esthetics are not for everybody, to be sure, but let that be the only thing that would hold you back from this purchase.
