5 out of 5 eggsGreat case from the first time builder point of view.

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: This review is for NSE-400-KKN2 version - Mid Tower without a Window, no fan LEDs.

IF YOU USE AFTERMARKET COOLER MAKE SURE IT WILL FIT!!!

!!! Check all your case screws before using them. In my case one screw was visibly fine but just wouldn't go in - the thread was probably slightly off. So if screw doesn't go in without an effort - try the other one.

My build:

Intel i7-4770 CPU with stock cooler (not overclocked)
Asus Z87-Plus motherboard
32 GB of Kingston KHX16C9P1K2/16 RAM (4x8GB) - from Asus compatibility list for this motherboard
2x2TB internal hard drives - WD Caviar Black WD2002FAEX
Pioneer BDR-2208 Blu-ray drive (retail, includes software for Blu-ray playback)
Asus GTX650TIB-DC2OC-2GD5 GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST graphics card
SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W power supply
CoolerMaster N400 case (note that all time favorite CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo is VERYTIGHTFIT for this case - about 4mm between the top of the heat sink and side cover. I decided not to use it)
Windows 7 x64

Laugh all you want but this was my first time build and and a case was a component I agonized over most of all. This seemed to be perfect for my needs/esthetic preferences and the price was right but it had no reviews at the time. I decided to buy it and I am not sorry I did.

It was a bit difficult to screw motherboard to stand-offs near the top of the case but it probably can't be avoided for this case size so I didn't remove any stars for that.

Also, motherboard connectors for Power and Reset button are very close together and it was a bit difficult to plug them in. I managed to swap them by mistake and was very upset when computer didn't power on. Then I tried reset - and it worked as power, so I figured out what went wrong. Asus also gives you a separate header to which you can connect all these wires outside the to make it easy - this header can then be plugged into the motherboard. But I didn't notice this part right away plus I am not the one to search for an easy way, I'd rather break my head trying the most difficult one :D

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Note that all time favorite CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo is VERYTIGHTFIT for this case - about 4mm between the top of the heat sink and side cover. I decided not to use it. For my usage stock cooler turned out to be just fine. CPU temp when idle is about 38 C (room temp 28 C).

Case comes with 2 3-wire fans but they are OS/CPU speed-adjustable without having to install any software from your motherboard maker (at least in case of Asus Z87-Plus motherboard and Windows 7 x64). Fans are close to silent when system is idle and fairly quiet when under load.

Overall when idle my system is probably as close to silent* as it can be without making any effort

*Except hard drive seek noise. This is the loudest noise it makes when idle.

Cons: Power and HD LED-s are too bright.

3 out of 5 eggsShould have gotten the N600

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: 1. Airflow seems fine, lots of places for mounting fans. I was able to mount a 120mm radiator to one of the top fan mounts in a pull config and also mount another 120 fan at the top next to it. If it was mounted at the rear, the radiator would block one of the top 120 mounts. A 240 at the top wouldn't clear the RAM modules, but your motherboard design may vary.

2. Build quality is great. Love how the front panel comes off clean without pulling wires out with it. All black parts and cables make it look very nice. Comes with a nice selection of hardware and JUST enough standoffs for an ATX motherboard (yes, you have to install standoffs in this case).

Cons: 1. I really want to echo what ROBERT W. already noted. The motherboard tray sits in a depression in the back panel of the case. This means an ATX motherboard with side-facing SATA ports will be extremely hard or impossible to access. If I had a right angled SATA connector that faced the right way, it wouldn't be such a big deal. However, none of the SATA cables I have want to work well with the case and motherboard.

2. Poor cable management. There is almost no room behind the motherboard tray, and there is only one opening next to the PSU. If you utilize this opening for your power cables, you HAVE to run them through the side 240 "radiator mount". So, if you actually do put a 240 rad here, you cannot route any thicker cables through it. I installed two 120 fans here for additional air intake and I could squeeze my 8 pin cable through the small space between the fan mount, but it's far from ideal. This case was not designed for cable management. There's really no way to see this based on the photos provided here. (Hey Newegg, I know it's a newer case, but a video review would be great so we can all get a look at the backside!)

Other Thoughts: In hindsight, I should have researched my case choice a little better. The N600 is another mid tower with seemingly more room for cables and everything else, and still at a decent price. I may end up returning this case and trying out the "larger version" of this case. If you have a decent amount of hardware to install (2+ drives, anything in the expansion bays, longer graphics card, etc.), move up. I'll admit it's a nice looking case, but the design limitations I mentioned above make me regret this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsBest case for the money, period

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: This case weighs almost nothing, but it's very strong and rigid. I don't know whether it's made from a cold-rolled, coated steel, or something else, but I've never seen a non-aluminum case that has this weight-to-strength ratio.

The case is great-looking; it has a matte black finish with attractive honeycomb-style vents that are forged into the actual case (they are not tacked-on plastic vents).

The front bezel is plastic, but it still looks sharp and is easy to remove.

Water-cooling capabilities; a radiator can be mounted on this case.

Removable screen filters in three separate locations, making it easy to remove accumulated dust from the case.

The case features white LED lights (for power and hard disk activity), which is pretty unique; I've never seen white LEDs in a case before.

The assembly is completely tool-less, which is great. The only minor exception is that a screw-driver is required to mount the motherboard to the case.

Speaking of screwdrivers, this is another simple feature that really sets CoolerMaster apart: the case hardware bag includes a Phillips-to-hex adapter, so an adjustable wrench or socket set is unnecessary when installing the brass offsets on which the motherboard is mounted. Good thing, too, because all I had was a screwdriver at the time of assembly! CoolerMaster saved me a trip home from the office.

Finally, CoolerMaster had the good sense to include *three* solid-state drive (SSD) bays in this case. So, if you are considering a SSD and were planning to buy a 3.5" to 2.5" enclosure/adapter for your SSD, it's not necessary with this case (unless you plan to buy more than three SSDs).

Very happy with this purchase; I looked long and hard for a case under $100 that meets all my needs and this is the sole contender.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I went into panic mode when I couldn't find any hardware with the case. Only after removing the front bezel did I realize that the hardware was indeed present! The bag was tucked up in the front of the case and was easy to miss upon initial inspection.

So, if you can't find the hardware that should be included with the case, dig-around *inside the case* (not in the box) and look for two small bags of hardware. The screws are all black, which is a nice touch, because they match the black finish on the case.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: solid feel, stylish, usb 3.0 on front panel, comes with 2 fans but can accommodate up to 8, no bracket need for 2.5" drives, good price

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: One reason I got this case was because of the usb 3.0 in the front, many of the less expensive cases don't have this yet. It's larger than I expected but there's lots of room for expansion - I may set up a RAID as it holds 5 3.5" hard drives on top of the 3 2.5" drives. Some people commented that their cases were damaged when they got them, but mine was packed well and arrived safely.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: Very neat look.
Tons of fan slots!!
Has two side panels, very handy at times.
The two fans that came with can really move some air.
Lots of hard drive space!!!

Cons: I placed the two xflow fans in the front first, but ended up pulling them out to install the right two fans ensted. It was a little challenging, but it is all good now. It's worth the airflow to me.

Other Thoughts: I did not ding the eggs for the cons because for me, for the price, it's a VERY nice tower!! Takes a little more work and thought into the cable management and fans, but for me it was fun. I did shove a 900 watt non modular into it though, and still panned out great. So yay, rock on Cooler Master!

5 out of 5 eggsNice Box

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: This is a nice reasonably priced case. It is far better than my old Coolermaster Centurion 5 CAC. I can even get to the front fans without taking out my HD. I like the four USB ports on front, two 2.0 and two 3.0.

Cons: I wish the power button was a different color...it would be easier to see.

Other Thoughts: A little more room behind the MoBo.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat case

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: Nice layout, interior black and well marked for installation of three sizes of motherboards. Front panel is pre-cabled so all you have to do is connect to the motherboard. Two included fans front and rear. Accessory screws and standoffs nicely packaged. Very sturdy steel case, not flimsy or easily twisted. Box it comes in is heavier than expected and protected the case well - arrived with no damage. Roomy with an ATX motherboard. The places for standoffs (included) for the motherboard were stamped next to the threaded holes and another stamped chart showed which holes to use for ATX, miniATX, and one other size motherboard. Included a special adapter to adapt a Philips head screwdriver to use in screwing in the standoff. Included a small package of plastic ties to organize cables for the final assembly. I had left over screws to be used if I wanted to use more or vice the included plastic single-twist DVD-RW or other option. An adapter to use a 2-1/2 inch drive in a 3-1/2 inch slot was included.

Cons: Instructions not great but at least the parts list is accurate. No other cons.

Other Thoughts: A pleasure to work with this case. I chose it for the layout and options of the front panel and the subdued look while having great capabilities. Subdued look which is exactly what I wanted.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent but need improvement

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: Overall it's a great case. Build quality is excellent at this price point. The two included 120mm fans are surprisingly quiet, unlike many of those junk fans that come with a case in this price range. I really liked the look of this case: simple, elegant, and with differentiation. Cable management is not the greatest, but decent enough that I wouldn't consider a con.

Cons: If you follow the manual and use the screws it asks you to use for mounting your motherboard to the standoff's, you would end up stripping the threads. It took me a while to figure out the designated screws had the wrong pitch. The other con is that the power switch LED is white and really bright.

3 out of 5 eggsRecessed motherboard tray blocks Z97-Pro SATA ports

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: Price, 2 very quiet fans with long cables and detachable MOLEX pass-through adapters, flat top (with hole grid, no fan) for putting your stuff on, lots of screws, includes cool little Phillips slot cylinder that slips over the hex brass m/b spacer mounts (forgetting the proper name) for driving them in.

Cons: UNUSABLE with an ASUS Z97-Pro motherboard!
"HORRIBLE", as others have said. UNFORTUNATE for CoolerMaster.

The recessed area for the motherboard is barely bigger than the mother board and blocks the lower row of SATA ports. This includes 1 of the 2 ports in the black block (vs. gray) that aren't SATAexpress. UNAVOIDABLE, UNFIXABLE without sawing up the plate.

Instructions show the wrong illustrations and count for some screws and parts. e.g. Hex head screws for mother board are shown as round head.

Other Thoughts: Bought locally at a computer super store. (Friend needed easy returns, et al.)
A motherboard speaker is included in the accessory bag.
Except for having to return it, I was very happy with this case.
ASUS Z97-Pro (WiFi ac)

4 out of 5 eggsNice Case

This review is from: Cooler Master N400 - Mid Tower Computer Case with ATX Motherboard Support, Multiple 240mm Radiator Support, and Ventilated Front Panel

Pros: Power supply at the bottom.
USB 3.0 and 2 connecters on the front.
A lot of room for large video cards and whatever else you want to put in it.
Lots of fan and water cooling options supported.

Cons: I would have liked to have had a few more exit holes in the MB mounting plate so I could have routed my power cables differently. Hard to explain but there are no exit holes in the plate. Many cases have two or three cable exit holes so you can pull cables from the back in the middle and top of the case.
Needed a couple more plastic HD mounting hardware It supports 4 HD's but only received two plastic locks. I just used some spare screws so it wasn't any real issue.
I have to open the case to remove and clean the filters.

Other Thoughts: I got this case on sale for less than $40 US. I wasn't expecting much and even planned on throwing it away if I had trouble with it. What a surprise I had when I started working with it. Very nice and easy to install my components.
I installed a water cooler for my CPU. It has two fans pulling cool outside air through the radiator. I had two different options so the case supported the feature well. It took me longer to decide which place to mount the radiator and which way the air should go than it did to do the actual mounting.
