1 out of 5 eggsNOT hot-swappable

Pros: 4 drive bays, compact

Cons: Contrary to the description, the drive bays are NOT hot-swappable, and this thing killed four known good hard drives before I realized what was going on.

Other Thoughts: The product description states that the 4 drive bays are hot-swappable, but as I learned the hard way, they are not. The first time I tried to hot-swap insert a hard drive (using a motherboard that supports hot-swap sata of course), the whole system powered off immediately, as if I had pulled the plug, and the hard drive was completely fried. The system would start up if the drive bay was empty, but would not power on with any drive (not just the fried hard drive) plugged in. Eventually I realized that if I plugged in another known good drive (while the system was off), that hard drive would also be immediately fried if I tried to power on the system (the lights would blink, but the system would not power up, and the hard drive would be fried). If I plugged a fried drive into another bay, that bay's power distribution board would immediately fry, and would also fry any further hard drives that were pugged in. I killed four known good hard drives before giving up on this piece of junk.

4 out of 5 eggsYou gotta jiggle it

Pros: Small, fairly quiet (with a celeron board). Supports 4x hard drives (externally accessible).

Cons: Drive bays very difficult to remove. No manual.

Other Thoughts: To remove the drive bays, insert the key and turn to the unlocked (up) position. Do not remove the key yet! Jiggle the key left and right a bit until the latch springs open.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Home Server - Update to previous

Pros: Good for NAS (WHS or FreeNas)

Cons: Could have more power attachments

Other Thoughts: No longer running FreeNas, I decided to spend the $49 on Windows Home Server 2011, the driver support is better and considering the rest of my home network is Windows 7, the HomeGroup features are a plus. I have also added a 500GB 2.5" HDD as the OS drive. I acquired a unique Hardware RAID adapter that uses a port multiplier type of technology.

The power supply seems to handle all 4 RED drives, the OS boot drive, and the H/W RAID without issue; however I have had to acquire additional Y cables to use the additional devices. Having had bad results with the SYBA in my previous review, I would like to say STAY AWAY from software RAID.

This box is primarily for backup for all of my other computers, but this might help you with archive and/or a central place to copy video/music media.

For those concerned with the 2 SATA ports on the 2700MUD on the combo kit, you can get the SPM393-I from DATOptic. I am no fan of the way they mail things; but the product is good. It has 5 ports in to the controller, and 1 port out to the SATA connector on your board. I have (4) 3TB RED drives in a RAID 5 giving 9TB of usable storage; much better performance than I had with the SYBA. The BIOS on the 2700MUD shows the available space correctly.

Note: Windows Home Server is End of Life in three years. As a technology professional, I'm OK with that for the time being .

2 out of 5 eggsNeed extra SATA card?

Pros: I do like the way you push on the right side of the drives and the handle pops out and they were easy to line up and work good.

Cons: I have the same question as the last guy. No instructions anywhere. The BOXD2700MUD motherboard included in the combo only has 2 sata connections but the box takes 4 hot swap drives. To use all 4 would I need to add a pci board with additional sata connections?

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought this as a combo with the atom board. From pick up at the door to sitting on the shelf with freenas installed and configured, 2 hrs. Very easy to put together and setup.

Cons: But I have a question, and maybe I'm missing something. The BOXD2700MUD motherboard included in the combo only has 2 sata connections but the box takes 4 hot swap drives. To use all 4 would I need to add a pci board with additional sata connections?

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: - 4x HS bays
- Size
- Relatively quiet case operation

Cons: - Price
- CHEAP quality materials
- No documentation whatsoever

Other Thoughts: ALL of the front panel clips were broken upon arrival. I had to glue them back on and they are basically now permanently attached to the case. You can tell that they were low quality to begin with.

Came with ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTIONS OR DOCUMENTATION OF ANY KIND. Not a single sheet of paper with words on it shipped with this product.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, PSU could be stronger

Pros: Small size, hotswap bays + 2.5" drive space, quiet fans

Cons: 200W PSU wasn't enough for me. I have four 3TB Seatage drives (not green) in RAID5, 60gb SSD, AMD E350 MB and 8gb RAM. Shuts down after 30 min. of formatting the drives. MB doesn't even get warm but PSU does. Ordered 300W 1U to replace the 200W cuz its easier to replace the PSU than to take the MB out and send the case back.

Other Thoughts: It really is the smallest case I could find with room for 4 drives AND a 2.5" SSD. Tight inside but not impossible and small is what I wanted. Perfect NAS case.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for a NAS...

Pros: I purchased this over a year ago before Newegg was selling it. It's a great case for a NAS. I've been running OpenMediaVault on this since it was release and haven't been happier.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsnice case

Pros: Very nice, small case, exactly what I've been looking for (4-bay mini ITX). Relatively quiet, as stable as I need, and the 2.5" bay is usable (if difficult). Avoid memory with big heatsinks, it will interfere with your SATA cabling.

Cons: Very, very tight to work in. Cabling all 4 bays to a typical mini-ITX board will take all of your skill and some luck. Very difficult to use the 2.5" bay, the power/SATA plugs nearly touch the memory on mine.

Other Thoughts: I'd buy another if I needed it.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect for a FreeNAS Home Server

Pros: I've read the other reviews about the power supply on this case not being enough and I couldn't disagree more. This thing has been on and running for over a month now and it's working beautifully.

The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 eggs, is they could have allowed the HDD cage to be removed or at least moved to allow for easier seating of the motherboard. It's a bit of a tight squeeze mounting a motherboard with it's CPU. Heatsink & fan mounted already.

Cons: Power Supply fan is a bit noisy (whiney/high pitched)... I will be buying another quieter 40mm fan for it.
