5 out of 5 eggsShort depth, but very accommodating

Pros: - short depth for a 3U (15.35")
- 2 external 5.25" bays support drive cages
- intuitive layout
- very sturdy

Cons: - I wish they made a 5th cutout for expansion cards, but I guess it was a little too close to the power supply.
- no serial port cutouts (would have been easy)

Other Thoughts: Apparently some 'experts' have never seen hot swap backplane devices. I have 2x iStarUSA BPU-126-SA installed that gives me 12 hot-swappable drives with plenty of breathing room.

I have one chassis at my home and one in my datacenter. I would definitely recommend for either use.

The layout is entirely intuitive. If you look at it for a couple minutes, it should make perfect sense to you and install will be a breeze. I really can't even see any place that would be 'tricky' or give a seasoned builder any issue at all.

3 out of 5 eggsWhat you'd expect for the money

Pros: Reasonable cooling, doesn't look horrible, not too flimsy, relatively lightweight, half-depth, inexpensive for a server chassis. Also includes rubber bumpers to help keep the vibration down.

Cons: Poor layout, not particularly well thought-out. Annoyingly bright LEDs on the front of the chassis (especially for the HDD indicator). Difficult to work on; requires nearly complete disassembly for many common tasks. No hot swap bays, though that's not surprising for the price bracket. Also, the powder coat is about the quality of budget spray-paint and can be scratched with a fingernail. This thing will age poorly.

Other Thoughts: This chassis isn't horrible, it's just mediocre. It is probably acceptable for a home or small office server on a budget, but I'd never drop it in a colo. The lack of hot-swap bays and the overall difficulty to work with it pretty much disqualifies it for anything serious. Still, if you want small footprint 3U rackmount for a fraction of the cost of a professional grade server chassis, the 3U390A may be just what you're looking for.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Case

Pros: This is a nice case with a small footprint, (nearly identical to the IStarUSA D-313SE-MATX, which I have been using for a couple of years and a few dozen builds). This version comes with a couple of fans, which the IStar unit does not, and also has cut outs for the drive bay racks, making assembly a little bit easier.

Cons: The 80mm fan, however, is a noisy beast. Remove it, replace it, smash it, whatever it takes to make it stop - the 120mm parked right next door is fine, but the 80mm sounds like a 747 landing in your workshop.

Other Thoughts: For the money, it's hard to find much else out there to compete with it.
