OverviewCustomer ReviewSpecificationsProduct Tour
Silence is stylish with the Sonata Plus 550 from Antec. This mid-tower case minimizes noise while still maintaining a stylish elegance. A 3-speed TriCool 120mm exhaust fan pulls air out of the case keeping things cool. You get a choice between maximum quiet and maximum cool. The air vents on the sides of the front bezel have a washable air filter to minimize dust in the system. A 92mm fan is mounted at the front of the case for dedicated hard drive cooling.

The four hard drive bays have an optional use suspension mounted to minimize transmitted vibration and noise for up to three drives. One of the four 5.25" drive bays has a 3.5" converter panel so you can install a floppy drive or a small accessory.

Included with the case is a 550W NeoPower modular power supply with a universal power input and Active PFC. They also included a set of front panel connectors to make life easier, 2 USB, 1 FireWire, 1 headphone and 1 microphone jack.

Piece of art

white Reviewed By: Martin on 12/26/2007

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: I purchased this case for a customer. It's a piece of art and nearly perfect.

The first one I received had 3 scratches and a dent on the front panel and the top of the panel was bent. I contacted Newegg on a Wednesday afternoon and they offered to ship me a new case w/o shipping costs which I received the next Friday. Eggcellent service!!

The case has a powerful modular PS, drive grommets to absorb vibration, fan mounts in front of the drive cage, sleek design and much more.

I mounted an Abit IP35 Pro with the side mounted SATA connectors that make a nice fit in this case because of the cable organizers on the drive cage.

I installed 2 regulated 92mm fans in front of 3 WD HDs and replaced the rear fan. For the Intel E6850 CPU I used the Zalman CNPS9500 cooler. Result is an inaudible system at both idle and full load and a very happy customer.
Cons: Antec always uses 4-pin fans and the one in this case has 3 adjustable rpm levels. I'd rather would have seen a regulated 3-pin fan so I replaced it with the Scythe S-FLEX SFF21D 120mm Case Fan. The IP35 Pro has 6 regulated fan headers so a pity not to use them.

To reach the air filter up front you have to first remove the main side panel in order to open the hinched front panel. Minor issue because the filter doesn't need cleaning often. A little button on the left bottom corner of the front panel to release the retainers would have been a nicer solution.
Other Thoughts: Be aware that if you mount 92mm front fans the wires can be too short to reach the motherboard's headers. I used 2 Vantec SF9225L that fitted exactly to the AUX1 & 2 headers on top of the IP35 Pro board with only an inch of wire left. Some other fans might have wires that are too short.

Notice that Newegg's description concerning the front fan is incorrect. You need 1 or 2 92mm fans. Install at least 1 for up to 2 HDs, 2 for more than 2 HDs.

Pros: Excellent case to work with, very well built. It is possible to build a nearly silent computer using this case. The power supply is also very good and I like the modular cabling.
Cons: None.
Other Thoughts: I have built several computers using Antec cases but this is by far the best one I have seen.

NO BRANDING!

white Reviewed By: Kimmy on 6/19/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: decent power supply, clean sytle
Cons: They stuck their freaking name on the front. When you are building systems for others, you don't want the case manufacturer's name stuck on the front of the case. "Oh, you have an Antec computer system". "No, I don't have a freaking Antec, I have a custom system built by...."
Other Thoughts: Trying to buy a case is almost impossible now. I am trying to build a nice system for someone and either the cases are dog doo ugly, cheaply made, or they have the manufacturer's name all over it. Where do white box builders go to get a nice case without a reseller's licence?

Unusable

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Good aesthetic design. Relatively solid construction. Came with lots of extra screws and cables.
Cons: Optical drive slots are totally unusable. We have attempted to install over six different optical drives as well as internal card readers into the drive bays on this case and there is simply no way we could decipher to actually attach the drives to the case. I reiterate: OPTICAL DRIVES CANNOT BE PROPERLY INSTALLED IN THIS CASE. Additionally, the case arrived severely bent as though it had been dropped a few times. Probably not newegg's fault, however.
Other Thoughts: It is possible that the particular case that we received was missing some sort of mounting bracket for the external drive bays, in which case the trouble we were having with it is understandable. Nevertheless, we have returned the case for a refund and went with a coolermaster model instead. We were also skeptical about the PSU on this unit, but did not test it before sending the case back for RMA.

Good quiet case

Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 day to 1 week
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Quiet case with exhaust fan on low. PSU is quiet as well, and has modular cables. Case is not flashy, which I appreciate.
Cons: Front Firewire port is not helpful for me. I'd have preferred eSATA, but not a big deal.
Other Thoughts: It required a surprising amount of force to get the screw holes on my motherboard (ASUS P5Q-E) line up. Front fans are not included, which may be a pro or con, depending on your needs.
