5 out of 5 eggsLove this case

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Love these cases great price for the features and very adaptable for a high performance office work PC or a High End Gaming Rig

Cons: Little light - feels a little flimsy but not really a con - just efficient use of materials

5 out of 5 eggsSolid mid range case, fantastic budget case

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: -5 fan mounting places are simple and straightforward
-2.5 SSD mounting point is convenient
-bottom mounted power supply
-has a blue power LED that isn't too flashy, just right
-not extremely flashy design; utilitarian
-sturdy when fully built
-top ports are convenient
-cable management is alright
-mounting 5.25" drives is straightforward and holds up very well
-3 included fans are quiet and move air well
-fan controller controls 4 fans
-fits long graphics cards (HD6950)
-cooling is good for this price range

Cons: -metal is rather flimsy
-cable management is just alright, good for a budget case though
-hard drive mounts do not stay locked well
-case is actually smaller than it looks, a good thing and a bad thing
-cable management is just par

Other Thoughts: I purchased this case as my Antec Sonata was just not cutting it in the cooling department. I liked the Sonata because it was extremely sturdy (I could sit on it without bending the metal), didn't look too flashy...or flashy at all.

The cooling in that case just wasn't suited for the hardware I was running. Everything was running about 5-15C hotter than when I switched to the GX500.

I was looking at the GX500 because I was looking for a budget case that had cooling and space for future upgrades. I stumble across this for $5 off a little while back and decided to take a stab at it.

I received the case and was pleasantly surprised by the size and the looks of it. It was smaller than I expected but just the right size. Upon opening the side panel, I realized that the metal on the side panel was more flimsy than I was used to on an Antec case.

As I was building my build into it, there were plenty of holes to put cords through to reach the motherboard. The front panel connections are straightforward but I wish they included a USB 3.0 to 2.0 connector. Luckily I had one from the previous build. My H60 water cooler fit nicely on the rear fan slot. The hard drive rails are of different sizing but not too hard to figure out. They didn't lock in great for me though and kept falling out. I guess they eventually locked in, since I was able to lay the case face down and they stayed.

My power supply is a 900W Antec that was not modular. I noticed as I attempted to store all of the cables behind the motherboard tray, the tray was actually flexing. I ended up placing them in the last empty hard drive slot

Upon boot up and testing temperatures, I realized that with 4 fans, the cooling was above par in this range of cases. The fan controllers can control up to 4 fans (or 5 I am not sure, I think 5) and are conveniently placed on the top of the case.

Overall I am very happy with this case. While the quality is not up to par with cases that are outside of this price range or at the very top of this range, competing in this class this case offers all of the features of a much nicer case in a very nice package

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Nice Looking
Painted Inside
Decent Layout

Cons: Pretty flimsy construction. When lifting the case it tends to warp.

However, my biggest gripe is with the IO shield punch out;. The top right corner (when looking from inside case) was detached and pushed back into the case. This caused this corner to be pushed into the case about a 1/2 inch. This messed up the geometry preventing me from snapping the IO shield back in.

To work around this I had to slide 2 zip ties through a whole in the back, cut them off and melt them to hold this piece in alignment. This allowed me to seat the motherboard properly but it is very tight. The MB doesn't line up just right so I had to push it very hard to get the scripts into the standoffs.

I can't be bothered to return it because it cost so little. However, I'm not thrilled about it.

I would not buy the case again

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Well thought out design. PS mounts on the bottom with for cool air intake, and fan screen that is easily removed for cleaning. Ample space for additional 120mm fans throughout the case. Entire interior was easily accessible, and both sides of the case come off to ease installation. Both 5.25 and 3.5 bays provide easy tooless installation for drives.

Cons: Steel used in costruction is fairly flimsy, and there were no instruction included for drive installation but there was for a how to remove the front and top fan screens. The stock fans seemed to be fairly loud for what is available today.

Other Thoughts: What can I say, this is a pretty good case for the price, though it was the first time I used a hammer on a computer. Back of the case had gotten wrenched somewhere before it was even packaged (long before NewEgg I would guess) and the blanking plate for the rear connections prevented theMoBo from lining up with the mounting standoffs. A couple of wacks with a soft piece of wood and a hammer, and everything lined up fine. Which is also a testament to the thinness of the case metal.

Connections for the included fans was well thought out with cables routed nicely, though I replaced all stock fans with a higher grade fan. Once I figured out the drive mountings, I was impressed with how easily they went together, though that took an extra few minutes without instructions.

All in all, for the price, I'd order another of these cases, or recommend it to someone else. It seems to be a tradeoff in materials, for better engineering.

4 out of 5 eggsFairly good

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Nice looking case that's still tough looking without having gaudy LEDs or xtreem designs. 2 USB 3.0 slots on the front. Good quality metal with no burrs, was not worried about cutting myself inside the case once. Very spacious inside the case. Fits an R9 280X with no problems and with 4-5 inches to spare. Already has a 2.5" spot for SSD (make sure you screw it in first before installing card). Blue light power strip on the front of the case is nice looking. Comes with a fan controller.

Cons: As with any case, the stock fans that come with it generally aren't the highest quality you can buy, and these aren't much of an exception. They do cool down the system, but are fairly loud at high RPMs. The top front fan is already making a grinding sound when spooling up after only having the case for 5 days. The audio cable is just barely long enough, being taut connected to the audio jack on the motherboard.

Other Thoughts: I have recommended it to friends, it's overall a great case. The fan going bad does suck, but fans are easily replaced on the cheap.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap Front USB

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: +Two front USB ports
+Filters
+Fan control on top of case
+Comes with three fans (good airflow)
+Nice hard drive cage
+Room for cable management

Cons: -Cheap Plastic. The front USB port broke into the case and now I can't plug anything into it because it has no support to hold the USB/audio on front. This is my only complaint but it really sucks that I can't use the front USB ports.

Other Thoughts: I really like this case but the fact that I can't use the USB on the front is a real bummer. I would give it a 2.5 if I could.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Computer Case

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very well designed and reasonably robust, too. Even has provision for external water cooling - don't see that every day. My full ATX Gigabyte Extreme motherboard fit with room to spare - quite surprised actually. And my 1200 Watt power supply also fit with ease.

Cons: Not really many cons I can even mention except for the motherboard standoffs. One fell out during shipping and the threads in the case were partially stripped out. Used a nut on the back side for all standoffs - problem solved. No screws supplied at all, but lots of plastic rails for disk drives.

Other Thoughts: I was actually about to cancel purchasing this after reading all the 1 Egg reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised when I received this computer case. It really looks sharp, very well designed. Don't understand all the negativity - makes no sense to me. It is a really good deal especially if I get the rebate that brings it down to $30. Astounding deal.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Antec GX500 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Top fan control (front/rear optional)

No tool drive install

Dedicated SSD slot

Cool looking power LED

Dust filters

Cons: Didn't come with enough motherboard mounting screws (3)

Other Thoughts: I had to break one of the left HDD mounting slides to put the case side back on. Instructions weren't clear so that could of been my fault, haven't built a computer in years (pre no-tool install style cases).

The control switch for the top fans control both fans, FWIW.
