4 out of 5 eggsGood, but not perfect

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very solid construction
Quiet, LED-lit fans included
Subtle, tasteful good looks
Large for a mid tower (fits large graphics cards & CPU coolers)
Easy, no-problem installation of MB and disc and optical drives
Excellent cooling, yet quiet
No adapter needed to install SSD

Cons: The biggest problem I have with the case is the design of the right side panel and the cable management. The cables route nicely through grommet-protected ports in the inner "bulkhead," so that's no problem by itself. But the panel on that side of the case (actually both sides, but the right side is where it matters) has a bulge - presumably to make room for cables. However, this bulge slopes inward and terminates right on top of where all of the motherboard and fan cables come through the inner bulkhead, right next to the 3.5" drive bays and the SATA cables coming from them. What you get is a mass of cables being smushed into a relatively small area. Placing the right side panel on after building my system reminded me of the cartoonish scenario of sitting on an over-filled suitcase in order to latch it no matter how I arranged the cables with zip ties. Almost none of my cables actually utilize the bulge in the right side panel - it's practically empty.

The other annoying, but not deal-breaking problem I had was that the back end of some rivets poked up through the bottom of the case at the PSU mounting location. Basically, little tubes of metal that were higher than the rubber pads that the PSU is supposed to sit on to dampen noise. I scratched up my PSU at first trying to line up the mounting holes because I didn't realize it was actually sitting on these metal rivets. I filed down the rivets so they were finally lower than the rubber pads, so problem solved, but I should not have had to do that, and my PSU is scratched up now. I don't care at all about looks/scratches, but I know a lot of enthusiasts are.

Lastly, I would liked to have connected the case fans directly to the fan terminals on my Asus Z97-A motherboard in order to fully utilize automated cooling and overclocking, but the fan cables are designed to work the manual fan speed switch on the front of the case. I probably could have figured out how cut the cables and buy/install the proper connectors onto the cables for use with the MB terminals, but I admit I did not attempt this. Would be nice if Corsair included some adapters to go from the factory connectors to MB connectors. This isn't a big deal, I just use the manual switch instead, which works fine.

Other Thoughts: This is only the second system I have ever built for myself, so I don't have a lot of experience. Take my criticisms with a grain of salt. This is an excellent case that worked wonderfully for me. My biggest hope doing this system was that I could get a moderately (not extremely) well performing system without any major problems, and this case fit that bill perfectly. Everything went together correctly the first time and has worked almost flawlessly for about six months now.

1 out of 5 eggsPower button non-functional

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Interesting cable management solution. Removable panels on 3 sides make for easy access.

Cons: Power button was non-functional out of the box. Using the reset button lead to function as the power button instead. Very annoying, but not worth the hassle of uninstalling all my components and going through the RMA process.

5 out of 5 eggsAll and more

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: the open space, air flow - after moving my components out of my old case with all the cables, looking like a squid trying mate my motherboard, its hard to believe the roominess. I easily add 2 top fans, and was running in a short time.

I saw some people had issue with the huge side fan, took a moment of examination, to notice there is a special plug just for it, worked right the 1st try

Had been partial to another brand before this getting case, but they got too proud and kept raising prices, looks like Corsair landed me for future builds

Cons: None, well the shipping box had a ding, but the case untouched, so well packaged

Other Thoughts: Bonus - there is a switch on the panel to turn off the LED's on the fans, I love it, the LEDS and side windows never appealed to me and being able to turn em off, fantastic

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome!

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Big, spacious, amazing for the price. The framework is easy to access and I really love the removable drive trays. It's also really quiet. I was concerned because of its open-ness, but I wouldn't even know it was on most of the time except that the monitor is glowing. Oh, and the LED lights are simple to switch off if you need to leave it running overnight.

Cons: Mine came with an oversized fan on the left side panel, and I'll have to say I'm not pleased with it. I've plugged it in a few different ports and fiddled with it a couple of times, but it's still not operating, and the manual that came with the case had no info. Also, a few other people mentioned filters on their reviews. I didn't think it would be that bad, but now I would definitely say you should be prepared to rig some new filters for it.

Other Thoughts: I would probably suggest buying some additional fans for this one. Though, I'm only running the stock fans right now (-1) and its running super cool. And really, get the filters. I have three cats so full filter protection is important to me.

4 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with CORSAIR Hydro Series H105

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Great case, as long as you don't plan on cooling it with the Corsair H105. I switched to the Noctua cooler and now am very happy with the case, and have it FULLY LOADED to the max with hard drives and an overclocked i7-3770K, 4400 MHz (44 x 100) running at a cool 20'C ambient idle temp. You can mount Noctua fans on the inside hard drive cage with the provided threaded holes and draw more cool air over your PCH southbridge and GPU fans as well, which brings the temps down far into the safe overclocking range of temps.

Cons: Don't buy this case if you plan on using it with the CORSAIR Hydro Series H105. It WON'T fit properly, and force you to mount the radiator in such a way that it doesn't make direct contact with the H105 cooling fans. Also, the H105 fans had to be mounted with the case mount between the fans and the radiator and were VERY, VERY LOUD! Had to remove the H105 and go with the Noctua NH-D14 SE2011, which is VERY, VERY QUIET and cools much better than the H105.

Other Thoughts: Doen'st work with the Corsair H105 as advertised. Works great with the Noctua cooling system once you place an extra fan in the top for drawing hot air up through the top and at least one extra Noctua on the inside hard drive cage to draw cool air in over the southbridge of the motherboard. Noctua system is super quiet and cools much better than the Corsair H105. Item#: 9SIA0AJ2KG0923

5 out of 5 eggsBest case I've ever owned

This review is from: Corsair Carbide Series 500R Black Steel structure with molded ABS plastic accent pieces ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Pros: Very nice layout, easy install of components, continued ease of access to all components

Cons: Would have liked to see an included fan on top

Other Thoughts: I've owned cases from Antec and Cooler Master and so far this is the best case I've ever had. No sharp edges, very thoughtful layout, excellent wire management through the back of the mobo side and my favorite part is that you can continue to easily access all the various components of your system.
