5 out of 5 eggsAwesome budget case

Pros: 12 hot-swap bays for $199 (at least when I bought it), there's really no competition. Tons of space inside, includes 12 SATA cables for connecting to the drive bays and they all are long enough to stretch across the case. Fans are extremely quiet and move a decent amount of air.The drive caddies, while a little flimsy lock solidly into place in the drive bays.

Cons: Sharp edges!

Also, a minor nitpick, but I hate when the front panel cables don't follow any sort of color coding. JUST MAKE ALL THE NEGATIVE CONNECTIONS ONE COLOR. Granted, this points out that I obviously never bothered to read the manual but it seems like an obvious design choice, the less that someone has to read the manual the better.

Either way, neither of these issues are significant enough to remove a star, this case is awesome and the best deal out right now.

Other Thoughts: Special note, I ordered this using the regular Newegg 4-7 business day shipping and received it the very next day. Thanks Newegg!

4 out of 5 eggsSolid SOHO workhorse

Pros: Solid construction - the case has heft, I don't feel worried about putting a monitor on top of the closed case. Or a mid sized child.
Spacious - take of the lid and there's a mezzanine wall that leaves one large free rectanlge of fill-to-your-desire goodness.
Handy usb connections behind front panel.

Cons: Any power supply redundancy configuration is of your own design, it'll all hang off the four screw mountpoints that a standard ATX suply would attach to.
Make sure you have good long power leads to reach back and accross to that mezzanine mentioned above.
Don't let the chassis fall on the mid size child used to teat the lid strength.
You'l need a screwdriver to get in and out. It's only the one tool but the in most other respects the setup is tool-less seems incongruous.

Other Thoughts: While the disk trays/enclosures fill a bit wibbly, they have thus far behaved without fault. Hot insertion/replacement worked fine so far. The best thing I can say is that it's fairly boring in use, after installation it hasn't really crossed my mind.

3 out of 5 eggsfine for the price

Pros: Box construction is sturdy. Fans are very quiet. Very good price for 12 hot swap bays. Clear diagram in manual for connecting hard drive bays to motherboard.

Cons: The hard drive trays are flimsy. They should be inserted very carefully. I have had several drive connections flake out so I would not recommend a sensitive RAID array in this. The case is also too wide. I could not get it in my standard 42u rack, using Rosewill RSV-R26LX slides that are advertised as thin profile. Not a big deal for me, I put it on a shelf. The handles are too big to get the door closed. The rack is full of Dell & Supermicro cases that do not have these issues.

Other Thoughts: If you can work around the size issues and don't mind a drive disappearing from your network every now and then, this is definitely worth the money. I'm living with mine for now but will replace it with something more reliable when time permits.

I built this as a low power always-on file server for a 3d animation studio. It also hosts software licenses and runs autodesk backburner, so needed to be more than a NAS.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: Cheap

Cons: The HDD trays on this are awful. They tend to get lose and drop off the drive connection, they reconnect with a little wiggle.

Other Thoughts: Hotswap drives are feature of servers and higher reliability products, this product is extremely substandard. Even not swapping them, just sitting the trays get lose from vibration.

1 out of 5 eggsHARD DRIVE CAUGHT ON FIRE!!!!

Pros: low noise, heavy duty steel.

Cons: After installing everything except the hard drives I started by installing 1 of my brand new 4 TB WD Red hard drives. I turned on the server and started to notice a orange glow in the hard drive bay where I had installed the hard drive. I immediatelly shut the PSU off. I pulled the hard drive out and found that it had cought fire and had partially melted the plastic caddy that comes with the case. This is a first time ever for me so I was very shocked and worried that the rest of my system was damaged. Thankfully it appears that only the backplane of the case was damaged since I could not get any other hard drive to be detected by the BIOS if it was connected to the case's backplane. They were detected if connected directly to the motherboard so the backplane was the problem. I doubt that the issue was with the hard drive because but I'm not certain. In any case I would suggest to be very careful if you buy this case and test only one hard drive at a time making sure no fires arise. I've returned this case to newegg today having to pay $66 for the shipping and going through the hassle of un-installing all the hardware that goes into a server so I am extremely disapointed with the brand. This is my first Rosewill case and I'm not interested in buying any other of their products because even though they're cheap, the quality is horrible and even dangerous. The time and money I've lost because of this case is way more than the original price of the case. I now wish I had gone for a more reputalbe (and pricey) option.

Other Thoughts: If you have lots of time and money to spend in returned shipping charges go ahead and make the gamble of buying this case. I see other reviewers have gotten better experience with this case than mine but I would not gamble with this company again.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this case

Pros: This case is great. I've got it loaded up with 12main drives, plus an SSD for the OS.

The airflow through the drives seems good.

Cons: The hot swap trays are a little flimsy, however it has not caused me any problems.

I wish there were a few extra mounting locations inside the case excluding the host swap bays. I ended up using some double-sided sticky tape to mount the SSD against the side wall of the case.

Other Thoughts: Heads up to anyone buying this: you might want to get some longer SATA cables. I had to get some .5meter SAS2 to SATA cables to connect my raid card to the drive bays and some of the plugs just barely reach.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Chasis

Pros: Sturdy. Bought another because I liked it so well. Neither of them were warped like in that other review. (Got them from another vendor.)

Cons: One drive cage was riveted together backwards; Rosewill sent me a new one at no charge to me. One mobo standoff had no inner threads. Rosewill claimed not to have any parts and suggested exchanging the whole unit. I'm not that fastidious; but you guys could keep some spare parts on hand for just such an occasion. Also, including one extra standoff would been really nice. (They replaced my drive cage because they sell it as a separate item.)

Other Thoughts: I think I'll buy another one.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome case! Great value case!

Pros: I love this case! Three 4 bay hot-swap cages in a ROOMY 4U rack mount case! This is an unbelievable value! The three hot-swap cages alone will set you back $150 - minimum! Buy this case on sale for $159.99 and you're basically paying just $20 for the case. This case is quiet! I can barely hear the fans at all.

Cons: Of course a 4U rack mount case is going to be big. But thats why you bought this anyway, right? Some of the screws could be better. The front door is a little annoying. Would like the option of taking it off.

Other Thoughts: I use this case for my FreeNAS server. Everything fits extremely well! I just wish they had an option for turning this case into an external HDD drawer. :D

5 out of 5 eggsFreeNAS Server

Pros: The case is beautiful. There are not many other options for 12 vertical bay 4U cases. Used for a 12 hard drive (raid6 - 30 TB usable space) FreeNAS box. Good air flow through hard drive bays and then out the back. Drive bays might support hot swap if your motherboard or RAID card does (mine does and it works).

Cons: Need to be careful when working with drive bays. Sometimes the ports do not align and even though the drive powers up, just a bit of a hassle. Shouldn't really be swapping drives that often. It was a pain getting all 12 drives functioning, took 4 reboots of the server and had to reseat a few of the bays a couple times. No issues since.

Other Thoughts: Fans are not that loud when compared to other 4U server cases or other servers in general. It's actually the quietest 4U server case i've ever heard (or not heard). It's a rack-mounted server case which means it is meant to go in a rack. People don't normally put racks in places where noise is an issue. If people have issues with how loud the fans are then they should relocate the server to a more ideal place for a server. Mine is in the basement in a 1/2 rack. My 2U and 1U servers have fans louder then this thing. The fans are NOT loud by any means. I would buy one of these again and probably will for another project. Blue lights are bright, not a big deal, but might be for someone. Front of case has a fan filter and it can be vacuumed from the outside without causing any issues. Don't lock the server and lose your keys. Thumb screws are helpful if you open and close the top of the server case often.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for the price

Pros: this case is the best case for it's price point by far. Yes the drive carriages are cheaper than datacenter quality but for the price it's well worth it, besides how often does anyone swap drives for it to matter. This case is the best I have found for home servers.

Cons: Rear fans are loud so leave them unplugged and let the three 120mm run. It would be nice if it came with port multipliers but adding your own is simple. The light for the drive behind the lock can be seen through the front shield and is quite bright, a small piece of electrical (black vinyl) tape fixed that.
