3 out of 5 eggsServer Admin's view...

Pros: 1) Large
2) keeps cool
3) good "home business" chassis
4) fairly solid
5) redundant power

Cons: 1) flimsy hot swap bays
2) not enough juice in the PS's for today's market
3) does not play well with non-supermicro motherboards
4) too noisy for small business environment
5) somewhat overpriced, bought mine way back for much less

Other Thoughts: I work for IBM, deal with quality equipment every day, makes this seem like a piece of junk, BUT, go price an IBM SAN and it makes sense that it would pale in comparison. I would not buy for a business with critical needs, but for a small business in need of lots of space (CAD/Graphics) it's economical.

5 out of 5 eggsExcelent buy!

Pros: Well constructed.
Modular fans are very nice.
Case is built to be very tidy once everything is inside.
Keeps everything in the case extremely cool.

Cons: Very loud, must be placed in a server room.
Can be cramped in a few areas.
The drive cradles seems a bit flimsy.
The painted HDD screws don't thread correctly some of the time.
15 drive bay is an odd number.

Other Thoughts: I bought this case "Recertified". It was my first rack mount server case and found it to be an excellent buy.

Though the case is very loud, just slightly quieter then a jet engine, It keeps everything very cool. I'm sitting at less then or equal to 25C on all drives and CPU's with heavy disk activity and 98% load on two CPU's.

Its a little cramped when running the SATA cables to the backplane, even with the fans removed, but it's a minor inconvenience and you will only have to do it once.

The case came with a number of screws to fasten the HDD's to the drive cradles. These screws are painted, i believe it's to signify they have not been used. Sometimes this paint will cause the screw to miss thread which is a small nuisance.

The number of drive bays is a bit odd, 15. I'm finding myself with one bay I can't use or with a number of SATA connectors I can use. 6 to the mother board and 8 to a PCI-X card.

An excellent case will buy again.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad

Pros: - Modular fans
- SuperMicro board fit and connected perfectly
- Great airflow

Cons: - Fully loaded with 15 1TB hard drives over power loaded the backplane, and I had to rewire the front fans off the backplane to the motherboard. Not huge problem, but a PITA.
- Drive rails are flimsy and don't slide in very gracefully. Once they're in all is fine.
- After overcoming a few minor headaches, the system is up and running like a champ.

Other Thoughts: Buying a SuperMicro board for this chassis will save a lot of hassle.

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Well designed and well priced. 12 x1TB drives running in 3 staggered RAID5 arrays with 2x 300 gb veloci raptors running the OS in RAID 1. This in conjuction with My 3 ware card and Multi lane cables made a 30K$ NAS solution a 5K$ reality. I have a spare HD slot I use for take home backups. Thriple power supplies spins 15 hd's at boot with ease.

Cons: My box did not ship with any rear fans and from reading the manifest, they're not included. (stupid). I also noticed a bunch of light green capacitors on the HD backplane, very similar to the onles on my early supermicro boards that had died from bulging capacitors. read more at bad caps dot net.

Other Thoughts: If you don't get a supermicro server board, you will be dissappointed at the features you miss out on included in the front panel.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Chassis

Pros: Compact, but well laid-out. Ideal for a high capacity rack based storage server solution. Clean design with high quality components. Plenty of space to work within for motherboard installation.

Cons: Noise. This beast really needs to live in a dedicated server room, so that should not be a problem.

Other Thoughts: If we need additional storage servers, this is the model we will choose.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Storage Chassis

Pros: 15 drive bays, activity-sensing backplane, 15 individual SATA ports (for use with the ARC-1260 card w/o multilane adapters), Tri-redundant PSU, one PSU module is strong enough (although highly loaded) to support the entire server. Great airflow, 15 750GB drives each settling at about 30C while initializing a RAID6 array.

Cons: Non-multilane backplane, but that can also be a benefit depending on the card you choose.

Other Thoughts: We decided to see if a single PSU module would be strong enough to support the entire server (Xeon 3050, 2GB, 15 750GB drives) while initializing the array and it was. The PSU was strongly loaded and putting off a lot of heat, but the server did not crash. With two or more of the PSU modules plugged in, voltages are perfect and remain very steady. I can't see cooling ever being an issue with this case. Also, the server draws ~3A/110v as we have it configured, if anyone is curious. The cables are not too short if you use a Supermicro motherboard.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Case

Pros: This is a well designed case with lots of air flow. As another reviewer stated the cables are short. I used the Intel S5000PSLSATA board and needed to purchase an extender cable for the front panel cable (CBL-0084L)and an 8 pin power extender. All other cables reached fine.

Cons: Short cables

4 out of 5 eggsShort cables

Pros: Absolutely love the case design and look, the fans are easily moved. Drives can be easily added or replaced. Redundant power when needed. Great for a highly expandable NAS server, which is what my company will be using it for.

Cons: The board i got was a small board and fit into the case nicely , BUT the EPS12v 8 pin power cable was way to short and I had to rush order one. Also the front panel cables were also very short to reach my motherboard and it barely made it. In fact i had to route it through another hole to get the needed length. making bay 15 pretty much a risk to use.

Other Thoughts: GREAT CASE NO DOUBT BUT SERIOUSLY SHORT CABLES. also newegg doesnt sell the eps12v 8pin ext yet right now so it is coming from another vendor sadly. Being used for ubuntu 7.10 with LVM for an expandable and raided data storage pool. I also love the rails the work very well and handle the case weight when fully extended.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Excellent Chassis. Heavy, nice thick construction. Active Power Factor is a big plus. Fans are cartridge types for easy replacement if ever necessary. Nice ball bearing slides included.

Cons: None
