expected better
- Pros: The best reason to get this case is for all the drive bays. Its also pretty neat the way the four fans are easy to remove.
- Cons: Connecting an Intel-brand motherboard was a challenge. As others have said, both the front panel ribbon cable and the 8-pin power cable are much too short.
No documentation included, and the online manual isn't very good. The case really seems to have been designed for use only with same-brand motherboards.
The drive brackets are a little on the flimsy side, although they should work fine once installed. The tiny screws used to secure drives to the brackets are coated with some kind of blue gunk that makes them slightly too large? I stripped quite a few before giving up and finding different screws.
- Other Thoughts: Redundancy is nice, but the triple power supplies suck down lots of extra power, even when the box is idle. I'm not sure the airflow is all that great. Mine is loaded with 8 sticks of memory which get very, very hot. Makes me wish I had the model with the air shroud instead.
solid case
- Pros: large, 15 drive bays, back plane supports activity LEDs on the front panel without having to hack your own wiring from the controller, strong metal build, power supply nicely pre-wired for the front, powerful fans, etc
- Cons: the front panel wiring was 2" too short for my motherboard - had to cut and splice wires to get that extra reach. Not something you'd expect from the wiring harness included to fit non-Supermicro boards
- Other Thoughts: if you need more than 8 drives for a large array, this case is a winner
- Pros: Overall high quality.
- Cons: Supermicro was very skimpy on the cabling in this case. The front panel cabling and the 8 pin power connector were way too short for my Tyan board which had the ports in pretty standard locations. I'm having to order extensions for both.
