4 out of 5 eggsDefinately use a SUPER MICRO motherboard. Motherboard contacts only fit super micro.

Pros: The case actually fits more super micro motherboards then what is listed. I am using a X10SLL-F-0 edition motherboard from supermicro and it fit. According to their website it said it wouldn't fit or work. Yet it does. I like the fact that the case comes with both types of back plates as I can easily put the right back plate to match. Which gives a professional look that my customer will like. Air cooling is efficient and comes with extra plastic walls to keep air flowing in the right direction. I recommend using a SSD drives for this unit as the cooling is past the front drive cage and doesn't off much air flow for the hard drives. But again this is typical in a 1U case. Great handles on the unit that are solid to make it easier to lift into the rack.

Cons: Stock cooler doesn't fit but kind of expected since this is a 1U case. Everything 1U you need to order a separate cooling unit for it to work. Power cables for the HD are too long and not necessary to be that long. Had to tie up more cable in a tight cramped space. Power supply is weird. it has an 8 Pin 12 volt rail and a 20 pin power connector. This normally is not a problem because it can be adapted for smaller. Just seems odd. I removed an egg from this review because the power supply has a little hummm noise that is a little annoying. I might need to investigate this further to see if this is a problem or by design.

Other Thoughts: Over all this is a great case. But when you purchase a supermicro case be sure to get a supermicro motherboard. They don't fit anything else. I attempted to line up another ASRock server motherboard and it won't fit properly. Not that I was intending to use the ASRock, just wanted to see if the motherboard contacts were in a different position. They are. then again supermicro server motherboards are great and have all the professional perks of the higher class server motherboards.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable Chassis and Power Supply

Pros: I have been running production environment with these cases without a problem. Power Supply is very reliable and if you get the right SuperMicro motherboard, you can build a nice server for a very good price. Couple that with the correct CPU and vent shroud and hard drive... then you got yourself a nice system.

Cons: It does require a bit of work to route Sata cables if you are using mirror configuration. There are no slide rackmount rails. It only has 2 screws that mounts in the front. So ensure you plan your deployment right if you need to provide maintenance with minimum downtime.

Other Thoughts: I highly recommend this chassis if you are working with a tight constraint for budget and power. The chassis is very good, and if you configure the system correctly, then you have a nice server you can count on in a production environment. I have over 15 of these server running Windows Server behind F5

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Case

Pros: This is a very nice case to get if you get the SuperMicro motherboard (part # N82E16813182211). Power supply is very quiet and I have been running 6 of these servers in a production environment with no issues so far. This is a great solution if budget is a concern. Also there is very little power consumption.

Cons: none I can think of.

4 out of 5 eggsGood case at Good price

Pros: Low Cost
Reliable Power Supply
Light Weight
Includes Blower
Fits Most SM motherboards directly

Cons: Single Fan Setup
HDD Layout is very Tight
Non SM Motherboards can be used, but without Backplates.
FrontPanel connector designed exclusively for SM motherboards - Requires adaptation for other MB brands

Other Thoughts: I have 10 servers that use these cases. All of which have been running for roughly 3 years. The power supply that comes with these cases is very reliable. This is a great benefit considering the low cost of these cases. You can use non SuperMicro motherboards, in these cases, but you will be left without a backplate, and it will require adaptation of the front panel i/o conector. All but 2 of my server are SM motherboards, so it has not been much of an issue for me.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT fit ASUS P8B-X R server board

Pros: None yet

Cons: I/O panel doesn't match ASUS server board layout.
Also, server front panel connector is 16 pin, but the ASUS board uses 20 pin.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes NOT take just any ATX M/B

Pros: Can't tell yet, since the motherboard I got DOESN'T FIT

Cons: WARNING - Although the case says it will take any motherboard up to full ATX size, I found out (the hard way) that you MUST get a motherboard that is compatible with the existing I/O Shield (which is a couple millimeters SHORTER) than the standard. You can't even use the motherboard without the backplane if the port housings are too tall.
From the manual page 5-5:
Important Motherboard Installation Information
Before installing the motherboard, be aware of the following:
I/O Shield Backplate
The backplate holds the motherboard ports in place. Your motherboard must match SC512 backplate. If your motherboard does not match, you must choose a different motherboard.
