5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Great. No complaints. Well thought out case. Lives up to the the good hype. Air flow and cooling are top notch. Comes with two power supplies, I only use one to save a little bit of power.

Cons: Loud when you first boot up, but it quiets down after a few minutes. The fans are what makes it loud. It's okay for the next room, but I would not put it in the same room as where you work. Also, when the server is off, the included power supplies take about 14 watts each when shut down. I ended up just using one and leave the other disconnected.

Other Thoughts: It's a good server box when you realize what it is for. Also, you could quiet it down if you adjust the fans, but you would need a third party fan control device. You might be able to do it by the open source software provided by SuperMicro (I thought I saw something that can control it anyway).. But, if these are going into a rack in the datacenter, you don't need to worry about the noise.

5 out of 5 eggsA joy to work with

Pros: After having a horrendous time with a Norco RPC-4220 chassis (feel free to read my review on NewEgg) I decided to give SuperMicro's product a try since there seems to be a lack of 24 hot swap drive bay rack-mount chassis with mini SFF-8087 connectors.

Everyone who has dealt with a SuperMicro product seldom complains about the build quality or reliability. This particular chassis is no exception: it's an absolute joy to work with it. From start to finish, I assembled my client's storage server without any hiccups.

The dual-redundant 1200W power supplies take up little room in the chassis. The backplanes are already pre-wired with the necessary molex power connectors straight from the PSU. Since six (6) mini SFF-8087 cables are required to interface with the single backplane, there is very little cabling involved when it comes to this chassis, meaning no spaghetti-like wiring messes inside the case.

The intake and exhaust fans are a snap to remove/replace. I am not sure if they are hot-swappable, but little amount of work was involved to remove and re-add them back into their slots.

Which brings to me to say the following: everything in this chassis just "clicks". Literally; you add & remove any component in this case, and it just clicks. It gives you a good feeling that you're simply working with a quality solution.

Oh-- it was an absolute thrill to see the hard drive bay LEDs light up in sequence upon the first power-up.

Cons: There's not much to say here, but I will share a few minor issues I had during assembly.

First, there is a lack of paper documentation or a diagram of "key features" that can aid a technician during the assembly phase. Example: there is an expansion slot to add a slim optical drive. You'll receive an oddly-shaped metal bracket that is supposed to mount somewhere. I spent a bit of time trying to figure out what and where this puzzle piece could be installed. Hint: it's in the rear of the case, next to the power supply.

Second, the installation of the plastic baffle / air flow management part is a bit difficult, especially when installing a non-SuperMicro motherboard. On an Intel S1200BTSR, the 12V EPS connector is situated in the rear of the board. The necessary power cable is too short from the power supply, so when you try to install the plastic baffle over the board, special attention is required to press down the cables gently else you will have a difficult time.

Fourth, the odd placements and orientations of the mini SFF-8087 connectors annoyed me slightly, as I like to see connectors "lined-up" and leveled. That's just my perfectionism at play.

Lastly, the fans can be considered louder than most server chassis, but it was not an issue for my client since they are deploying this storage system in a dedicated server room.

Other Thoughts: I'd love to work on the 36 and 72 hot-swap models in the future!
