Apex’s MI-008 case is a great choice for instances where you don’t have a lot of space for a system. It would work well in kiosks or as a video wall controller. You could also use it to control information signs in a hotel or airport. Its small size would also make it a good choice for a HTPC.

The drive bay housing tilts up for easy installation. There are two external bays, one 5.25” and one 3.5”. There is also a 3.5” hard drive bay. The front panel also has two audio jacks and two USB ports. Once everything is installed put the lid back on and you’re good to go.

  • newegg Stands Horizontally or Vertically The APEX MI-008 can be laid horizontally on your desk or vertically on the floor to fit your working space.
  • newegg HTPC System with 3 Drive Bays Featuring an external 5.25" drive bays and two 3.5" drive bays (one external and one internal), the APEX MI-008 provides sufficient expandability as an HTPC (Home Theatre PC) case.
  • newegg Convenient Front I/O Panel The APEX MI-008 features a convenient front I/O panel for easy access to two USB 2.0 and two audio ports.
  • newegg Built-in 250W PSU The APEX MI-008 is equipped with a 250W power supply unit to handle typical power consumption for most Mini-ITX systems.

3 out of 5 eggsA great case for the right needs

Pros: Case is very compact, easy to transport.
Power supply has been reliable, five years after purchase.
For the right build, it's perfect.

Cons: Air flow can be abysmal.
Upgrade options are limited.

Other Thoughts: This's very much a make-it-or-break-it case. Some cases are neither good nor bad for any builds; others are extremely specialized. This's definitely the latter. I bought this for use with a media center, and it's done an alright job since. I dislike how tight it is to work in, but once it's set up, I don't need to go back in, really.

My biggest worry has been airflow. The way it's set up, it feels like the power supply takes up about a quarter of the case, and the stock cooler on my Intel CPU literally touches it. I ended up adding another fan to the side just to create consistent circulation to try to offset how atrocious the airflow is.

At the end of the day, I feel like this isn't a bad case. I do, however, feel like it wasn't the right case for this need.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid case if you do your part.

Pros: Small, locks tightly, very well thought out for it's intended role.

Cons: Weak power supply. Worried about upgrading to discreet graphics.

Other Thoughts: I bought this case to build a small PC for a table-mounted monitor (For table top gaming / digital poker / score counting for board games.)

I used an AMD A4 APU. It fit perfectly. I don't recall any difficulty in fitting it beneath the power supply. I mounted a large 120mm fan in the side tray that blows across all internals and out the far side. Have considered adding a fan on the far side for exhaust. Boot up temps around 33 C, stays cool through use. I run photoshop on this regularly with the integrated graphics card. Temps are fine, room is fine, everything is fine.

Cat knocked box off of table one day, and the whole thing got stored in an attic for about 6 months. Booted it up last week, no damage. Works just fine.

4 out of 5 eggsTemperature issues can be solved

Pros: Small, compact case, as advertised. Fits well in my home entertainment system.

Cons: The PS fan exhaust blows into the top of the case where there are no vents! In my system, the CPU temp heated up greater than 70 deg C - no bueno. I bought an exernal 120mm fan and placed it where the vertical HDD is expected to go. Its a tight fit for the fan, but it gives a great amount of circulation - now CPU temps are in the 40's!

Other Thoughts: To get the chassis fan to fit in the side slot, I needed to fit the HDD in the 3.5" bay. This is possible if you do 2 things:
- Makesure the CPU clamp is away from the HDD (toward the back of the case). This gives you more room to work in.
- Before you install the HDD, snake the SATA data and power connectors from the Mobo to the slot. That way, you can plug in the connectors before insertion into the slot, and all you have to do is to "fold" the cables gently as the HDD is inserted into the bay (from the front).

Also, put in the Blu-ray / DVD player at the very end!

3 out of 5 eggsToo small

Pros: Very small. Pro only if that's what you need.

Cons: VERY small. This was my first HTPC build and I was honestly pretty lazy with picking out the components. I didn't look at the measurements for this case (my fault) and when I tried to assemble it, not even the stock AMD APU cooler will fit in this case. The include power supply will get in the way of anything except a $5 silver-dollar-sized CPU cooler.

Do not make my mistake; do your measurements before you buy this case!

3 out of 5 eggsAPEX MI-008: It's okay.

Pros: -Power supply is fairly reliable
-Small form factor
-Cooling is okay, vents on both sides
-Near silent PSU

Cons: -Power supply runs fairly warm
-No fan mounts on the case
-The bottom feels cheap and bendy
-PSU wires aren't easy to cable manage, too long with no cable tie clips

Other Thoughts: It does the job, but I wouldn't recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsToo Small !

Pros: None

Cons: The unit is just too small to do anything.I had to squeeze the power supply unit over the board and pass the dvd drive with wires jammed between the two.The air in this box was horrible and there's no place for an extra fan !

Other Thoughts: The front door cover broke, very poorly made unit.. I,ll just throw it in the trash and order a better case.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Very cheap, materials are of poor quality. Design is not the best. Very cheap PSU. Only 2 SATA power connectors on the PSU. Very hard to get a DVD drive to fit in it correctly. Its just not very well thought out.

PSU has low hours rating. IE you are going to replace it in a year if you use it as a seed box.

Other Thoughts: Do your self a favor and spend a little more money on a better case / PSU.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -Small
-Looks neat

Cons: one major SUPER DUPER flaw is that (as many of the other reviewers state) the power supply is RIGHT OVER THE CPU! I tried to put in an AMD A10 APU and i could absolutely not fit the stock cooler in it. Do not be fooled by what anyone else posts you cannot do it and have the case properly come together. this also has the extra fun of the CPU temp being extremely high. even with a low profile fan i could not get this thing to a stable temp under 70 when (only) sitting in the BIOS so i cannot imagine playing videos or light games on it. i plan on returning it.

Other Thoughts: they made this thing so small that it is a genuine pain to install anything. if you are insane enough to buy this thing you should ONLY buy it for a really low end CPU that won't generate a lot of heat and has a fairly short heatsink/fan. i understand wanting to build a really small CPU but this is not worth the hassle.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: small case that is sturdy.

Cons: Hard to fit a CPU fan and heat sink in this case. PSU sits right on top of it and causes heat issues.

Other Thoughts: My configuration had a PSU that has a fan on the bottom. I am sure this caused my issues with the limited space between the PSU and the system board. I am returning this for a different case.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Case... little power problem

Pros: This is a great little case, and I was able to fit all of the parts nicely. I added an extra fan by just setting it on the side and enclosing the case right on it such that it doesn't touch any wires. This way, I was able to remedy that little problem of the PSU and CPU fans being so close. My little Gelid pulls the hot air right out the side.

Cons: A HUGE Con, and the reason for only three stars, is the issue I've been having with the power supply. When I first built my HTPC, the plug was touchy. If I even moved the PC a little, it would shut off, and I would have to reach back there and push it in to turn it back on. It's been just over a month now, and the darn thing won't even turn on at all now. I've tried using different plugs, different outlets, checked the I/O connection to the motherboard... all but break that precious little warranty seal to get inside and take a look. Guess I'll be sending this one back. Shame.

Other Thoughts: Fix the power supply?
