Silverstone’s SST-LC17-B case takes the classic desktop configuration and updates it for use as an HTPC. The front panel is stark in design with few things marring the surface. The four USB ports, FireWire port and audio ports are hidden behind a door when not in use and the two optical drive bays have color matched panels.

Inside the case there is as much space as a standard tower. There are six internal 3.5” bays so you can set up a huge storage array with RAID data security. The motherboard tray will handle both micro and standard ATX boards. There are also seven full height expansion slots. So, with the right choices in components this one box can eliminate a number of standard AV components.

  • newegg Superior Expandability with 9 Drive Bays Boasting two 5.25" external drive bays, and seven 3.5” drive bays (one external and six internal), the Silverstone SST-LC17-B HTPC case provides superior expandability.
  • newegg Efficient Ventilation The Silverstone SST-LC17-B features two 80mm rear fans and side vents for efficient ventilation and effective system cooling.
  • newegg Convenient Front I/O Panel The Silverstone SST-LC17-B features a convenient front I/O panel for easy access to one IEEE 1394 port, four USB 2.0 and two audio ports.

4 out of 5 eggsGood little case for not a lot of cash

Pros: Looks unassuming and even stylish next to my Onkyo receiver. Black aluminum finish doesn't add glare. Plenty of fans for my standard duty usage and easy to install components with removable drive bay trays. Silverstone case fans are much so quiet, I sometimes have to listen closely to determine if the computer is even on.

Cons: The blue power and HDD LEDs are too bright, so I disconnected the leads at the mobo. The case is on an open shelf below the TV, so watching movies with blue light glaring at us wasn't going to work.

The 5.25" drive bays are right above the 24-pin power connector, which would concern me if I wanted to install two 5.25" drives and might make it difficult to install more than two or three 3.5" drives with the power wires cutting across. This may have more to do with the mobo than the case itself based on where the power pin is located.

The aluminum exterior drive tray covers are affixed with double-sided tape, which is fine, but with the plastic tray cover on my drive being curved, it was almost impossible to get the aluminum cover flush. When the optical drive spools up, the aluminum cover sometimes rattles against the aluminum face of the case. This may be a function of the optical drive more so than the case itself.

Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a good case and I am happy with the purchase for my first HTPC.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Case.

Pros: For a basic htpc it looks pretty sharp.Solidly constructed & the 2 included 80mm fans do a good job.I added 2 94mm to the drive cages because i overclock.ATX Board,[GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P],Fits.It's tight but fits. Some reviewers disliked the support rail on the top.I used it to wire tie cables to.I was glad it's there. The Led's , buttons & front inputs are nice.Dvd drive looks good without the cover so i did'nt use it.Looks good in my entertainment stand.Goes well with my reciever & other components.Beats the tower i had on the floor.Iknow i;m diggin it.

Cons: None. Removing the drive cages was no big deal for me but may be for others. The led's were not to bright for me either.

Other Thoughts: If you are putting this in an entertainment stand or center with front doors like mine then go crazy on the fans. You won't hear them anyway and your box will stay nice and cool.

4 out of 5 eggsWorth what you pay, but no more

Pros: First off, the case is fairly attractive if you are after a very minimal home theater PC. And, frankly, it’s not all that difficult to install into – provided you pay attention and have some experience building PCs. There aren’t very many ATX or mATX boxes out there these days, so for a low-end (e.g., ‘Frankenbox PC’) this isn’t a bad deal.

Cons: On the negative side, as noted by others the blue LEDs are too bright. The large ‘SilverStone’ logo is fairly unattractive, too. The fans are a bit on the loud side, but for the cost a set of silenced replacement fans shouldn’t be too hard to acquire. (And, if your motherboard supports case fan control… it’s not a problem most of the time anyway.) The double-stick tape to put the optical drive faces on is a bit odd, but it does seem to work. Far and away the most negative piece is that a number of the components (e.g., drive cages) actually warp when you remove the screws holding them in place – they’re held in alignment by force, so you’ll have to push them back in to re-install them. And, fair warning: Cables are going to be a pain to install. Think it through before you start, and don’t install all the expansion boards until you’ve done the motherboard (e.g., USB) wiring.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I was looking for a low-end case to install the miscellaneous parts that accumulate in my house and create a simple PC to allow guests in the guest rooms to have email and internet access though the TV, without having to buy a desk for an all-out workstation. This case, an old Soyo motherboard, etc., and I’ve got what I was looking for. Heck, the wireless keyboard cost more than this case – and the guest computer doesn’t look near as cheap as it was.

1 out of 5 eggsOh how I loathe this case

Pros: The front panel is made of high quality materials. Overall look is ok and doesn't stand out from the rest of the home theater equipment.

Cons: The design is terrible! Here is a brakedown of all of the issues:
* The blue lights on the front are WAY too bright and intrusive as the IO light blinks while you watch movies
* The fans are LOUD! Little 80mm fans running at 2300 rpm are the loudest things in the case
* This case has NO noise reduction, a standard in a lot of other HTPC cases (ie: rubber grommets to mount fans/hard drives)
* The mounting system for the expansion bays (BD drive, HD, ect) is in such a way where to remove the drive you must remove the bay which requires so much space it runs into all of the mother board's components like memory and heat sink!
* The opening for the BluRay Drive wasn't big enough for my drive's tray to open through so I had to dremel down the tray until it fit. I couldn't get it perfectly flush with the front panel!
* While the materials used may be high quality, the internals are so basic you will scratch your head and wonder why you paid a ton of money for a front panel

Other Thoughts: I've been building computers for 15 years now and I hate this case more than most. After using so many other cases, and seeing HTPC cases friends of mine have from other manufacturers, I feel so ripped off. The only thing that makes this case a HTPC case is the simplistic front that looks only somewhat similar to a piece of home theater equiptment. The rest of the case is such a poor case it doesn't make sense not to go to another manufacturer to purchase one.

The "friend" of mine who pushed me to purchase this case is a Silverstone fanatic whose fanaticism I find not only unjustified but completely misplaced!

5 out of 5 eggsHTPC case: none better

Pros: Great design and features. The front USB/audio/Firewire ports are a great addition. Internal airflow is really good. Looks clean and integrates well into a home theater system.

Cons: The hard drives will overlap the front end of the motherboard, making things pretty cramped; I had to use 6" SATA cables with angle connectors to get everything to fit. The included rear 80mm fans are a bit loud, and don't appear to be speed-adjustable.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Media Center Case!

Pros: Style, design it has it all, fits perfectly in the entertainment center. I would buy this case again in a heartbeat. Very quiet running, like others have said.

Cons: Tight fit, but if you pay attention when putting the mobo in and getting it fastened down all is good.

Other Thoughts: This truly is a very good case for using as a media computer. I looked at a bunch of cases before choosing this case, it has a lot of great features and excellent quality.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Case except for Card Slots

Pros: Good front design and plenty of cooling ports.

Cons: Card slots to low, had to use longer screws to secure all cards, that is video card, tuner card, and audio card. Had to watch that i didn't tighten screws to much or they would tilt in motherboard slots.

Other Thoughts: I plan on replacing this case with an different HTPC case, probably an LIAN LI.

5 out of 5 eggsSleek case outside, tight fit on inside

Pros: The build quality of the case is extremely high. I was very impressed when I popped it open. It looks like there's plenty of space, but appearances can be deceiving when doing a full ATX build. This is obviously a HTPC case and most people will be sticking a BD drive in. Be warned, because BD drives tend to be a good 3/4" or more longer than a DVD drive. I literally have 1.25" between the back of the BD drive and the Zalman HSF on my CPU. I had to remove the drive cage first, install the drives in the cage, hook up the power and cables (also hook up the 12-pin MB power cable which is not so conveniently located in the same spot on my MB) then angle the drive cage down and force the front of the drives through the holes. Not easy to do. I could not have fit two BD drives in the case due to length. Shorter DVD drive went in the lower slot. It was a bit difficult to line the eject button on my DVD drive up with the front of the case.

Cons: No thumb screws which is annoying. 3 Pin fans. 80mm fans, one of which is much louder than the other. I plan to disconnect it to bring down the dB level of the build. Wires for the USB, Firewire and Stereo headers in the 3.5" slot are surprisingly thick and get in the way.

You can add 120mm fans in front of the HDD drive cages, but do it first thing because they have to be inserted from the side, and you'll have to remove the DVD drive cage first.

Other Thoughts: As another reviewer mentioned, when using a standard ATX Power Supply, the fan is against the side wall next to a really small vent. This seemed pointless to me, and as I was building a cool machine, I figured the power supply would be better sucking air out of the interior. Mounting the power supply "upside-down" seems like a much better idea.
The metal drive covers are held on with double sided tape, which seemed really lousy, until I put them on yesterday. The tape is really thick, holds incredibly well and it took all of 5 minutes to install on two drives. After actually attempting it, I had no complaints at all over this implementation.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Case except for Power Supply mounting

Pros: Case is well built and of very solid construction - could not find 1 sharp edge to cut myself on!
The 2 HDD cages are easy to use and 6 mounts is 5 more than I'll ever need - this is for HTPC not storage.
Really impressed with Optical mount - beauty cover is solid aluminum, not plastic and fits well.
Front inputs are ok and door is also solid, but will not be used much.
Overall am very happy

Cons: 1. Case PS mounting is designed for "Standard" PS with 80mm fans mounted on the back by the AC input, not for "Quiet" PS with bottom mounted 120mm or 135mm fans. The stock screw holes and cutout mount puts the normal PS bottom up against the case left side panel. This makes the fan pull air in only thru a small rectangular vent and the restriction causes a "whoosh". Air comes in the case side vent, goes thru the PS and right back out again. This also means the PS fan can't pull air from the rest of the case or contribute anything to case airflow or cooling. Had to mount my CoolerMaster "Silent" PS upside-down and use only 3 mounting screws.
2. For my HTPC, the dual 80mm rear fans were too noisy and not necessary once I had the 135mm "Silent" PS remounted to cool the case. The also only have 3 leads, not 4, so the speed can't be controled by my MB.

Other Thoughts: This will be a HTPC next to my HDTV & geared for quiet.
- Single HDD inside and several TB on a NAS elsewhere & feeding in on the 1GB LAN. Using a ECS MB with ATI 3200 onboard HDMI video and 7.1 sound - no extra cards with fans running. AMD X2 5600+ cooled by a large heatpipe HS & 120mm fan running at 1800rpm - 36C idle and 42C full load

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice case, but a little cramped.

Pros: The case is very solid construction and is gorgeous to look at. Comes with a ton of mounting hardware and screws and the instruction are clear and concise.

Cons: The case is a little cramped inside and you may have trouble fitting all of you components, wiring, drives, etc. inside. Some moving around and adjusting may be necessary.

Other Thoughts: Let's face it, we are buying this case because it will look good in our home theater setup. We have a little trade off of fitting everything into it, but that it the price of having a computer case that looks like a high end AV receiver. I am very happy with the purchase.
