Solid Case, but not perfect
- Pros: Sturdy, good looking case with simple, clean lines. Arrived in a very strong box, no damage worries. This case is built like a tank. Not terribly difficult to build, the instructions take you through step by step (more on the instructions below).
The finish is very nice, and blends in well with my receiver. There is not much that can go wrong with the case once assembled, i.e. no cheap buttons or parts. All the front panel connectors and switch cables are clearly labeled. Fans are fairly quiet on their own, especially if you have BIOS fan control. I don't see any vibration issues with this case because everything is tight and plenty of mounting screws for the drives come in the package.
Tons of cage room for more HDD's, with a punch-out for installing fans in front of each of the two HDD cages. Looks like the cooling design is pretty well thought out.
- Cons: Very tight build. The ATX connector on my MoBo (Abit Quad GT) is forced down by the optical drive so that the wires are bent over parallel to the plane of the MoBo. The cabling is a little troublesome to get set up with the drive cage, as the drive cage mounts by sliding in from back to front (a rail system).
Also, a standard DVD drive on my MoBo is over top both sets of RAM slots, iirc. A longer drive may not fit because the cables in the back may hit the HSF. Blue LED level is overkill, yes you can mod it or disconnect it, but that shouldn't be necessary.
Although the step-by-step instructions are fairly straight forward, the pictures are a bit small so double check the orientation of parts and which screws to use at each step.
- Other Thoughts: I wasn't sure what to expect for around a hundred clams. This case has a few shortfalls that to me don't justify the price. It is well built and solid, but far from perfect. If you want a simple case without all the bells and whistles, look no further.
Although this case is a good use of space, cabling may prove problematic and could require an innovative approach to get everything together. Some components will just not work so be wary of your layout prior to purchasing.
As a not during this build, the bottom tab of the PCI/PCI-e metal slot portion needed to be pressed in towards the front of the case while inserting the card in order to get the card to mount flush with the retention screw.
Solid buy!
- Pros: Solidly built, with plenty of air flow. I like the removable bay trays!
- Cons: None.
Bigger than you think....
- Pros: Well thought out case design, good ventilation, TONS of space for hard drives, looks great, very nicely made, fits in well with my other A/V equipment. I bought a larger case than I really needed because this is my first venture into a HTPC and I wanted the ability to use full height cards and have room to expand. I have that in spades!
- Cons: I wish the cooling fans were a bit quieter. When listening to music at lower volumes, I definitely notice them and I find it a bit distracting. I'll eventually either add a fan control, or replace them. Problem is I read in some review where they where supposed to be 21db, which I thought was pretty good. Now I'm wondering just how quiet a db rating would be good enough...and will they move enough air.
- Other Thoughts: Water cooling? how much noise do the circulating pumps make?
