Amazing Home Theater Server Case with
Incredible Storage and Cooling Capacity
case_02

The GD08 cases from SilverStone ushers in a new era of home theater computing like never before. For the first time, the power and storage capacity of a server can now be neatly stowed beautifully and quietly in a home theater environment. Completely engineered to fully utilize all available spaces, the Grandia GD08 can accommodate an incredible amount of drives (up to twelve) and high-end components (graphics cards up to 13.6 inches long) with minimal sacrifices.

With a wealth of lessons learned from building the best performing tower cases in the last several years, SilverStone engineers upgraded GD08’s cooling performance tremendously with up to five 120mm fan options. And to make sure owners can easily maintain their cases’ cooling ability over time with the lowest noise possible, custom designed removable filters surround the case for positive pressure to work effectively and quietly.

To complement the tremendous new design, the GD08 is built with the thickest aluminum front panel of any SilverStone case with a styling that pays homage to the most popular HTPC case ever made, the Lascala LC17. For HTPC enthusiasts all over the world, this case is truly a dream come true!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very well built and plenty of room for hard drives. I have 1 ssd and 5 hdd with room for 2 to 3 more if I wanted to get creative! I had to spend a little time getting the optical drive eject button just right but it works great and I have burned about 300 movies with 0 problems. The included case fans keep everything very cool with cpu and motherboard temps hovering around 36c after watching 2 or 3 movies and I have yet to hear them! Also looks great in my entertainment center.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Build Specs - ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 LGA 1150 ATX Intel Motherboard, i3-4360 3.7 GHz cpu, stock intel cooler,128 gb Plextor ssd, 2 3tb wd hdd 2 3tb wd hdd and 1 4tb wd hdd, Silverstone strider plus st50f-p modular ps, asus bluray drive, 8gb G.Skill memory

5 out of 5 eggsNice, but big.

Pros: I bought the case based on the pictures, price, and ability to place multiple sized boards in it. It is a well laid out case design that gives plenty of room to place big video cards in it, and has a lot of space for HDDs. The main drive (SSD, or HDD) can be mounted in a side slot to keep it separated (logically) from the storage drives -nice touch.

Cons: None, but see other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: While it can take on the big components, it is a very large case. I have a DVD/VCR player, and a DVD stand alone burner stacked on top of each other next to this case, and the case is about an inch taller. Yes, it is replacing them, and can do so much more, I was just hoping that Moore's Law would magically reduce the size of all of my components.

Because the case is large I wanted to give the rating 4 eggs -but the inside has so much room for drives, I have to stick with 5 eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsNot too sure about their CS!

Pros: Beautiful aesthetics, blends well with the rest of my a/v equipment in my living room.
there's plenty of space for my ATX MB, a SSD 260gb hd, and over 16TB with still a few bays felt for some more HD's.
No Video cards yet, but I think I can add one if I need to, the stock fans are good, but not great. They're a little noisy for my taste . So spend on after market fans if you're looking for quieter dB's
No IR receiver to turn on and off the unit, I've seen mods done to the case. I leave the unit turn on 24/7 for updates, etc. I use a HP IR remote t navigate Plex, and XBMC but it's limited to some commands!

Cons: My biggest beef with this case is with the freaking optical flaps, and the Achilles heels of this almost prefect case.

You have to be a magician to get the optical drive to aligned correctly with the slot! Even after that there's some sort of comparability issues Optical drive brand and flap! Others have no issues with their optical drives, while allot of us just can't seem to get it to work!

Here where lack of faith from customer service comes in.
I'm the customer, and if I'm saying and reporting there's a front flap issue going you should take my world for it, I don't want extra parts, I just want my issue fix.
I email CS, and it seem they were going to oblige with my request, and get my broken flap fix on my own. They just seize to communicate with me!
They said they were going to send me mailing information but that was left up in the air!

In my book that's a big no no. I use to guide the optical tray while lowering the flap so that disturbing Crunch, KLUNK won't destroy the flap door.

Well it took way too many knocks, now the door just lays lifeless, taking away from the beauty of the case.

I get lots of question here on Newegg, and AVS forum about the case, and I always tell them to look else were.

The main reason I'm giving it two Eggs is the lack of response from CS which is a real shame.

Other Thoughts: C'mon Silver stone lets fix this minor issue, it will pay ten folds in the long run, and have your CS people follow through their promise.
Also we buy this case to integrate it with the rest of our AV gear, why not make it more Home Theater friendly, no? Make a remote, or a dongle to operate the case! Too much sense???

Thanks

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent gaming case in HTPC format

Pros: High volume case with lots of room - easily fits ATX board, dual video cards, optical drive and SSD.

Cons: Though it is roomy, you do have to pay attention to how components from the front of the case will meet with components from the motherboard. For example, HDD(s) need to be offset to avoid conflict with video card(s). Connectors on back of optical drive may conflict with CPU cooler. Choose components thoughtfully.

Other Thoughts: Case height limits air-cooling options and using water cooling is not an option without major case modifications; however, with the ability to have five 120mm case fans, this case allows plenty of air movement. I chose a 92mm air cooler and replaced the stock fans with slim profile push-pull fans. Combination cools a socket 2011 processor (not overclocked) to 35c idle and 65c under gaming load.

4 out of 5 eggsLots of storage, lots of screws

Pros: It's got a nice, small profile, and will fit right in with the rest of your home theater components. The stock fans work great - I've got seven hard drives running in the thing with 2 of the three case fans blowing on them from below. All the drives - despite being so close together - have stayed comfortable below 40C.

And I got SEVEN HARD DRIVES in the thing! With room for an eighth! The hard drives are all installed in a removable rack - the best part of the design.

Cons: The two USB 3.0 ports in the back are nice, although some more front-loaded slots. And convenient size + lots of wires = inconvenient build. And ohjeez THE SCREWS. Two for the back (roof) plate. Two for video / IDE slots. Six (yes, six) for the drive bays - NOT including the screws for the actual drives.

I mean, you're not gonna be afraid of your parts moving around in there but ohjeez THE SCREWS.

Also - if you're buying a new CD/DVD/Bluray for this, make sure it's got the right eject button setup. Otherwise, you'lll be prying open the front bay door every time you want to change a disc.

Other Thoughts: There's not a lot of HTPC cases (or cases in general) that hold this many drives for an economical price.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent HTPC case

Pros: • Easily fits a full sized graphics card
• Lots of configurations for fans (5x120 mm, 2x80 mm)
• Fits all kinds of motherboard formats
• Stock fans are silent on low to mid rpms
• Adjustable brightness activity / power led
• Lots of headroom for a CPU cooler *see other thoughts*
• Padded feet reduce vibration / noise
• Comes with removable / cleanable fan filters on everything but the 2 x 80mm exhaust slots that have good porosity for airflow, but tight enough to catch most dust
• Removable HDD tray
• Cover is easily removed and replaced, comes with a pad for sound dampening
• "Hidden" optical bays keep the aesthetic look of the front panel

Cons: • Not very much in the way of cable management. With a full ATX Mobo there's a two inch gap between the edge of the board and the fans where the bulk of my cables are run, but no tie downs to use.
• Screws on cover aren't thumb screws (easily replaced)
• No easy access cutout to the back of the motherboard for mounting a CPU cooler
• Minor bubbling of paint on sides of case - not perceptible from more than a couple of feet.

Other Thoughts: This case is quite roomy, especially for an HTPC build. Our build was a couch-gaming / HTPC rig (see specs below). So with a dedicated GPU it adds to the number of cables floating about.

Unfortunately there's not much in the way of cable management features in this case and the bulk of the cables pass between the bottom mounted fans (up to 3x120mm) and the components, blocking air flow.

In future iterations of the design it would be useful to have the bottom of the case drop down behind the bottom mounted fans (under the mobo) which would allow for a bottom panel and access behind the mobo for cable management and a cutout for easier CPU cooler install while still having the excellent bottom mounted fans. This is why there's one egg off. We only have a single SSD and a blue ray drive in there, I couldn't imagine the tangled array you'd have if you used more drives.

Otherwise the case is excellent, it looks great, it's sizable and has good customization for air flow. I ended up reversing the 120 mm intake fan at the back right hand side to an exhaust and have 3x120 mm intakes on the bottom to avoid using noisier 80 mm exhaust fans. Seems to be keeping things reasonably cool so far.

At the end of the day, if you're going for something like we did, where you're throwing in a dedicated GPU and other larger components this is a great case that will fit it all. Note though that you should do your measurements first! This case is (as noted in the description) large. From the outer edge of the front foot pad to the back one is 13" (33.02 cm) so make sure you've the room for it.

5 out of 5 eggspretty nice

Pros: pretty well built in my opinion.

Cons: only cone is on e-atx boards you have to remove one of the fans by the mobos sata ports to gain access to them. aside from that, not worth knocking an egg off for.

Other Thoughts: Really nice overall.

1 out of 5 eggsIncredibly Angry

Pros: Not worth mentioning

Cons: See below

Other Thoughts: I never post reviews...NEVER. But I'm so angry with this product that I just had to. Despite the fact that this case does have some great features, I feel like it's got such a massive design flaw that pointing out anything else good or bad about the case is irrelevant. This product should not be sold, bottom line. The optical drive bay flaps are the most poorly thought out things I've ever seen. Right out of the box, my drives cannot open as the flaps get stuck. If you spend some time learning the mechanics, you realize that the contact point threshold required to successfully open the flaps 100% of the time is below the points of contact that are actually hitting the tray and therefore the flap gets stuck 100% of the time. Now what am I going to do? I've got to pay to send this back. I will never buy a Silverstone product again in my life. The next 4 HTPC builds I'm doing will be with other cases.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Case

Pros: Good Construction. Generous room inside the case for various setups

Cons: Limited mounting for liquid cooling solutions. I had to modify my setup a little to fit my cooler.

Other Thoughts: Overall I would recommend this case to others for htpc setups however make sure your av cabinet has adequate room and ventilation.
